Ronny Deila era comes to an end

976

And release! Ronny Deila had to go and a few minutes ago, Celtic confirmed that he will leave at the end of the season. I’ve bitten my tongue on this online for months, as I once before suggested we sack a manager here (April 2008) and very quickly regretted it, but as anyone I’ve spoken to privately will tell you, it’s been clear we were on the wrong track since our Champions League exit in August.

The news broke in Norway that he was leaving a few days ago, which forced everyone’s hands to make an announcement now, but I’m glad he’s going to be with us to see the league title won. It doesn’t matter who the competition is, winning the league means lots to many of us, and we’re about to part company with only the second manager in our history not to lose a league title.

For that, he will always be welcome. It would have been absurd to sack a manager two games away from winning the league.

Ronny arrived with a plan for playing football which was cruelly exposed as inadequate in Warsaw, as Legia picked us off. That was acceptable, but the plan never changed. Neither did the results in Europe. We went down to Maribor and Malmo in the same manner.

I’d never heard of Ronny before his appointment but I backed the decision at the time, as he fitted the profile of manager I wanted: not a reject from England, someone who had overachieved with a club in Europe, a student of the game. The remit was right but the candidate was wrong. I still want someone to fit that remit, as opposed to an unemployed manager who has been through the English circuit.

While I would have made the same appointment, the board take responsibility for managerial appointments, good and bad, and they got this one wrong and deserve criticism.

You will note among the appropriate criticism that one journalist, banned from Celtic Park for nearly two years for lying, has used Celtic’s current vulnerability to swing his toe-capped boots.

This is Operation Destabilise Celtic, it’s an alternative strategy to apologising for lying about Celtic, or not lying about Celtic again. It has the hallmarks of an organised PR campaign. You know the script.

Ronny, all the very best and thanks for the Roar. Go win the league with some style.

  1. UPDATE

Malky Mckay was not at the school gates today. He is clearly in talks or still in penance somewhere.

Waiting for updates from BT on Neil Lennon in the west end.

Back to the studio where up next we talk to Neganon on how he’s coped with Peter Lawell stealing his girlfriend.

  2. So what happens if the next manager doesn’t qualify for Europe ? What will you say then ?

  3. Moyes has been sacked, then sacked again.

He will be sacked if he joins us.

Please no more mention of him on here.

  4. 16 roads - Celtic über alles... on

Ronny Delia problem was that he wasn’t ruthless enough when dealing with those imposters/wage thief players.

I’ll never understand why he continued to start with those wasters whom not only let him down, but continued to undermine the manager.

I hope that Ronny learns from his mistakes.

And here – Ronny cannot be totally vilified without these two questions being answered:

    1. Was the manager permitted to bring his own coaching staff along with him to the football club?

    2. Were the players signed his own targets, or was other people signing said players?

If Ronny personally was responsible for signing Carlton Cole, for example – then his mind wasn’t right, and he deserved to be sacked immediately.

Sorry to see a man lose his job, but for me the new man has to be Brendan Rodgers. Would Henrik Larsson be happy to be his number 2? Dream Team!

    Farewell Ronny.

Sad to see you go. Liked the sound of the ideas you hoped to implement.

Sadly the prima donna players seemed incapable of changing their ways.

Hope the progress in the development team doesn’t stall now.

Thanks for the Ronny Roar, young Kieran (hold your head high son) and for not buying into the Old Firm guff.

Good luck in the future. Wouldn’t surprise me if one of your teams knock us out of the CL some year!

I am willing to wager that Ronny had never even heard of Carlton Cole, let alone sign him.

    ———————————————————————

Tend to agree. Same too with Colin Kazim-Richards. Neither seem like the kind of player RD would sign.

  14. Cultsbhoy

Poor old Malky. Misunderstood but more importantly just looks a limited manager – outdone by the heid in Wigan.

    ooohhh maybe it’s Caldwell ?

  15. The more I think about it, the more we need an experienced manager. Someone who has dealt with problems in the past and formulated a way to find a solution.

Learning on the job is catastrophic for a Celtic manager. Every mistake is emphasised and analysed in a way that it would not be at a smaller club.

As 16Roads points out above, Ronny failed to be ruthless when selecting players who did not play for him – Commons in particular. An experienced manager will probably have dealt with this kind of nonsense before, and worked out a preferred strategy. Ferguson at ManU was in no doubt what damage a malingerer can do, and he acted swiftly when Robson and McGrath did not toe the line.

Similarly, when the club puts pressure on you to sign players (as many suspect happened to Ronny), then he needs to know how to respond. Meek acquiescence is seldom the best policy.

These days, managers tend not to last beyond 5 years, so there is really no point in looking at a 38 or 39 year old. Much better get someone in the 50s who has been around the block.

  16. South Of Tunis on

Non Brit candidates will need to be quick – depending on the result of the soon come Referendum they might require a work permit / a Residence permit and get a piece of paper from Celtic stating that they weren’t depriving an “equally qualified ” Brit of the job

  17. Norway’s TV2 hit the nail dead on when they talk about a bloodthirsty Scottish press pack. Everything connected with Celtic FC is prey; managers, players, fans, directors, whoever. It’s a really unique position we’re in, as those brave laddies of the “sporting press” go about their business. And we the fans fall for it every time. What pleasant people they are.

Somebody on here mentioned Lucien Favre ex Borussia Monchengladbach as a possible replacement. He did wonders with them in roughly similar circumstances. He’d be a good choice, but would he want to put up with the nonsense in bonny Scotland?

  18. blantyretim is praying for the Knox family on

I really hope the next manager like Big Jock has a ruthless streak

I pointed out when RD took the job that had any players moaned they should have been kicked into touch or it would come back and ruin his career

Unfortunately as is the way of the modern pre Madonna they remain at the manager/coaches expense

  19. 16 roads - Celtic über alles... on

    TET – Thank you.

The manager cannot be accountable for decisions made that he obviously had no say in whatsoever.

    It’s done now anyway, finished.

Is the scouting/signing policy just gonna continue on whenever the new manager takes over?

That’s the greatest concern. Those dunderheads have the green light to do whatever they want, without any accountability for there frequent and costly blunders.

  22. I agree with changes at Peter Lawwell level. Step 1, delete Dudu Dahan’s number out of Pete’s phone.

    Colin Kazim-Richards

Unconfirmed links to Scepovic (perhaps from his Ashdod days)

Also we were linked with the following players represented by Dahan:

    Juwon Oshaniwa (now of Hearts)

Maor Melikson (you probably don’t remember him)

This is the problem our next coach will face.

    HH

    ——————————————————–

Yep. The problem here is (we suspect) that many players were bought in (not by RD) in order to be polished up and sold on. Whoever comes in will face the same problem if they want to get rid of those off the wage bill. Set aside any of the contractual issues here. Let’s say David Moyes came in and stated that he wanted to get rid of 10 players who he believes are not up to scratch…will he be allowed to do so?

  26. 16 Roads

I have been banging this drum for years now, I can’t recall exactly when this policy started, but it was there pre Lenny, I honestly don’t have a major problem with it, it’s the modern way and if the truth be know, I would be more miffed if the club didn’t follow it, it saves the club money in the long run, as long as the scouts are doing their job, and clearly ours are not.

We have adopted a scatter gun approach to the detriment of the quality on the park, a massive failure on the part of who decided this policy, first thing should have been to get a winning team on the park, use the spare cash from the euro ventures to buy prospects in the hope of unearthing the diamond.

Lenny had a very decent team at one point, it was broken up and sold off, what chance did Ronny have in reality, though it must be said he didn’t help himself.

  27. cant understand a lot of people being negative towards David Moyes , If he had come to us after Everton we would all have been rejoicing , never stood a chance at Old Trafford . I think he would give us stability and that is what we really need right now. as I said before if we go down the path of a SPL manager , whoever it was would be so happy just to be here , he would probably take the job even if there was little or no transfer budget and probably interference from you know who from above ….no not god !! I want a guy who would only come on His terms ie no interference on team matters and a reasonable budget …..Think Brendan Rogers could be good but realistically cant see him wanting to come here

Problem in getting rid is the cost, every £ it takes to get rid is a £ less for the new coach.

I read on here day after day about getting rid of the deadwood, if only it were that simple.

I have not a clue what our ongoing budget is, but with the lack of CL income the past couple of years, I doubt we have much to spare the new man.

We are not in a great place, but with the right decisions we should be Ok.

The most important person at a football club IMO should be the coach~manager, if we do nothing in this debacle, appointing a proper coach should be the least we do, and pay him what it takes.

Reduce the non football related bonuses if needs be, but get the best we can.
