Ronny Deila era comes to an end

976

And release! Ronny Deila had to go and a few minutes ago, Celtic confirmed that he will leave at the end of the season. I’ve bitten my tongue on this online for months, as I once before suggested we sack a manager here (April 2008) and very quickly regretted it, but as anyone I’ve spoken to privately will tell you, it’s been clear we were on the wrong track since our Champions League exit in August.

The news broke in Norway that he was leaving a few days ago, which forced everyone’s hands to make an announcement now, but I’m glad he’s going to be with us to see the league title won. It doesn’t matter who the competition is, winning the league means lots to many of us, and we’re about to part company with only the second manager in our history not to lose a league title.

For that, he will always be welcome. It would have been absurd to sack a manager two games away from winning the league.

Ronny arrived with a plan for playing football which was cruelly exposed as inadequate in Warsaw, as Legia picked us off. That was acceptable, but the plan never changed. Neither did the results in Europe. We went down to Maribor and Malmo in the same manner.

I’d never heard of Ronny before his appointment but I backed the decision at the time, as he fitted the profile of manager I wanted: not a reject from England, someone who had overachieved with a club in Europe, a student of the game. The remit was right but the candidate was wrong. I still want someone to fit that remit, as opposed to an unemployed manager who has been through the English circuit.

While I would have made the same appointment, the board take responsibility for managerial appointments, good and bad, and they got this one wrong and deserve criticism.

You will note among the appropriate criticism that one journalist, banned from Celtic Park for nearly two years for lying, has used Celtic’s current vulnerability to swing his toe-capped boots.

This is Operation Destabilise Celtic, it’s an alternative strategy to apologising for lying about Celtic, or not lying about Celtic again. It has the hallmarks of an organised PR campaign. You know the script.

Ronny, all the very best and thanks for the Roar. Go win the league with some style.

  3. Ronny was a class act. Unfortunately the weight of expectation at our club is greater than most.

The single most important aspect of heading any large organization is the ability to manage personnel, to get them properly motivated and working as a unit towards a common and accepted goal. Ronny was clearly never able to accomplish that. He will leave as a double league winner and for that his tenure will be regarded, with the hindsight of history, as a success. I wish you well , Ronny.

  4. Bobby. I actually haven’t been on this site much over the last few weeks or since Sunday. That’s partly because there is no need because the vast majority are coming to the conclusion that the board are a disaster. As I say it’s my failure that I knew that for ages and couldn’t get many to listen.

I think sometimes I may come across as wanting failure simply because I have to deal with the likes of celtic40me and I get a bit aggressive like anything else. But my family and friends will tell you I have never wished ill on Celtic. In fact I get too caught up in wanting success.

Traditionalist and indeed celtic40me. I wish we had been protesting outside the ground for ages now but there was no appetite for it. Even I could see that. Raising awareness is always the start. Education and debate is always where protest starts from. But. That didn’t work.

    So here we are.

  5. The Irish Raj is the reason we are where we are.

His big arbitrage play came to nothing so the showy investment came to a stop.

The MON debacle and the pep talk from the bank in 2005 meant that the party was over.

Then came 2008 and he had bigger issues than growing his business, like keeping it afloat.

Therefore hands off was the order of the day and he was happy to reward anyone who could stop him having to put his hand in his pocket for money he didn’t have. Times might have improved but the vibe was the same, we were now a dormant asset that he could not sell.

PL is the villain of the piece.

He is the poison in the system that is killing us a football team of any standing.

He has been a bonus thief of 12 years standing — our transfer dealings in 2005 did not make sense until you accepted that the football came second, the bonus came first, second and last.

RD is just a consumable in all of this — fall guy put in place to take the blame for failing to deliver on the impossible task he was given. He can look back on some things and think he could have done better, he could have acted with a bit more maturity and he could have took more advice.

However he had no chance because of the actions of PL.

The players knew that results were not paramount, PL’s bonus was paramount.

They could be sold at moments notice if the financials demanded it.

Results and form were secondary, generating cash was the main game in play so the Irish Raj had good numbers to look at and PL’s bonus was safe.

But that was only half the story.

Player recruitment also had a PL “bonus” sheen to it as deal after deal took on a very agent friendly disposition in plain view of every man and his dog. So we were being hit twice — a whole series of terrible forwards for ridiculous money who we had to pay to leave plus the loss of CL money through bad preparation and the constant selling of any promising players we had.

As long as PL stays we have no chance.

It will be deja vu all over again as we downsize towards a £30mill T/O and obscurity.

All we can currently hope for is the Irish Raj is shamed into action.

  6. !!Bada Bing!!

Take your point, but I’d argue he has 5 games to prove that he can still be that player that won player of the year. If he can’t then he can leave to the first bidder.

Can you imagine the abuse O’Neill would get for leaving the NI job for Celtic?

Will be much worse than Myth leaving Scotland for Oldco…….. trying to remember how much compensation was involved in that one……;0 ?

  12. Its never nice to see anyone lose their job so on a human level I’m sad it didn’t work out for Ronny. We can all indulge in I told you so etc. but the key thing as HT said earlier is for the support to pick themselves up and as many as possible get to Celtic Park and roar the team to victory, Winning the League & keeping the run going is now number one priority.

After that it’s all about the new Manager, there have been a bunch of names mentioned and I think I read somewhere that Lenny has already expressed an interest. My main criteria for a new Boss is that he is his own man and not a patsy of the Board. We have all heard rumours and I’m sure there will be plenty more over next couple of weeks, Interesting few weeks coming up.

Thanks for response. Few issues with it:

    * You knew you weren’t alone. You could have been protesting outside. As per your posts, you’d rather be inside supporting the team, but you felt you couldn’t. So why no protest?

*You hint that CQN is a symptom of the malaise. It is not, however, the source. I assume you have let the club know in no uncertain terms why you didn’t renew your ticket? You didn’t really think Celtic would publicise this for you and help organise a protest at the front door themselves?

    * Here we are – lets say we get this managerial appointment right. People will have their opinions on the way the club is run and certain individuals at the top, but justifying a protest would be extremely difficult again. We were in the Champions league in the 2013/2014 season. Thats not that long ago. A mass protest would be highly unlikely unless we lost the league(badly). Why not bite the bullet and gather like minded supporters at the front door and outline your reasoning?

*Why would you take the decision to hurt Celtic financially BEFORE protesting visibly? Shouldn’t hitting Celtic in the pocket have been the last resort? Right now, your empty seat in all likelihood will just be attributed or your name addded to the ‘indifferent’ list, the ‘he might be back when ‘Rangers’ are here’ list or ‘he might return when the weathers nice’ list

  17. Madmitch makes a very good point about the CEO’S transfer bonus culture has a negative effect.

Johansen and Bitton both have been woeful since talk of big money moves appeared.

Signing players who see us as a stepping stone breeds an unrest in squad.

    It creates a divisive atmosphere.

Equally signing players with no long term ambition for the club makes it very difficult to build a collective team spirit.

Good luck Ronnie for the future.

Wake up this morning to see the message about our manager.

Sad to see us in this state of affairs. Honestly wanted to see it work out for Ronnie, as I think most good tims did as well. Looking back on Sunday’s game, and I still cannot fathom out how some of our players played the way they did. That other mob have a bunch of players on their team that probably , actually support the team.

How many of our players can we pick out that that we can really say that about. I do think our players like being at Celtic, but there is a big difference, when you are playing against a committed group that have a passion for their team.

it doesn’t matter that we had umpteen more shots on goal than the other mob, they buzzed around the field supporting each other from the get go. Didn’t see many of them pulling up or cramping.

I know we are all still hurting, but it surely must be time for us to stop infighting and pointing fingers. I wish I could fly home every weekend to stand and support our team, but I have to make do with a PC, and Irn Bru, and a poster that says sorry to my 4 kids every time a bad word makes its way out of my mouth.

The good thing is that at least they see someone passionate about their team. Wish I could have said the same about the players on Sunday, but they still have a job to do before the end of the season.

Miss the days of the double decker bus leaving the cross keys and the people at Wishy Cross being feart from the noise of the 150 people on a 75 seater bus

Lawwell is as much of a pawn in this game as Deila is.

Deila was Lawwell’s pupper and Lawwell is Desmonds.

If Lawwell was to be replaced, on what grounds?

He has achieved 100% of his KPI’s year on year and been rewarded with pay increases as a result.

If he goes, he is only going to be replaced by someone working to the same KPI’s, just as the manager will have to work to Lawwell’s brief.

NOTHING will change unless it starts at the beginning.

The absentee landlord needs to relinquish his control over the club and then we can look at a new Chief Exec whose speciality isnt debt reduction.

  26. dr ramesh and the love potion on

I feel sorry for Ronny in that he was possibly unprepared for the realities of Scottish football and has had the worst pool of Celtic players in a couple of decades. In saying that, he made many mistakes and has paid the price.

The worst thing about all this is the sheer lack of joined up thinking from the Celtic board. Like many I can’t see how Lawwell can continue. He has become a divisive figure and we need unity now more than ever.

The list of possible managers being banded about is truly depressing (apart from one or two unrealistic exceptions).
