Rosenborg call for ex-Aruba boss, SFA “must” refer to CAS

964

Rosenborg went five years without winning the Norwegian title before Kare Ingebrigtsen turned things around.  Under him, they were champions the last three seasons – back on the pertch.  A mere two points off the pace, having scraped a win against Valur, he was sacked, just six days before his former team face Celtic.

It seems harsh.  This is a club burdened by their Champions League history.  Until 2004, when money replaced meritocracy, they held the record for the number of consecutive appearances in the group stage (8).  But they never turned the lights off.  They see clubs from other small nations reach the group stage of the Europa League and, to a lesser extent, the Champions League, and know they could do the same.

If they thought Ingebrigtsen’s team would have beaten Celtic he would still be in a job.  Instead, they have thrown the dice in the hope of giving players an edge.  The new interim boss’s only managerial gig in the last seven years was six weeks in charge of the Aruba national team.  Since then he’s kicked around as a youth coach and been an assistant in Dubai.  It’s a strange one.

Sacking a manager often leads to a short-term boost in results, which is all that is required for European qualification.  Expect this tie to be competitive.  That’s good, I prefer Celtic to play in games with a visible edge, than against unknowns with fire in their belly.  Cool heads will be needed.  On that subject, we’ll discuss Jozo later.

Newco, having successfully argued the SFA should refer the matter of Rangers’ eligibility for Uefa competition in 2011 to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), now request the SFA do not take the matter to CAS.  It’s a kind of Newco logic; any victory in a storm.

They argue this procedural guidance establishes the complaint has no merit, whereas the SFA Judicial Panel Disciplinary Tribunal did not address the complaint, only their competency to examine it.

The Judicial Panel ruled “the Notice of Complaint must be determined by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.”  The word “must” has been overlooked by Newco.  The SFA must act accordingly.  Taking the whole thing to Lausanne will make sure we don’t need to go through another round of “Who are these people” type witch-hunts.  I know what you are thinking, Dave King has been making friend with the SFA on a weekly basis for months now, surely they will do his bidding.

I’m not sure Dave’s that clever.

I was reading James Forrest’s blog this morning about this Kent fella loaned to Der Hun. Apparently hardly played for Bristol or the german team, not thought good enough. Not a mention of that on the DR, just gushing pash about how wonderful he is etc etc. Oh the gullibles?

This talk about CAS is nonsense, it’s a smoke screen. Even if the SFA take it to CAS they will lose because they’ve tied themselves in knots in the 5 way agreement.

What i want Celtic to do now is call this fraud out. The SFA have failed to properly deal with the license issue to the extent that they haven’t properly dealt with the evidence relating to the granting of the license, instead focusing on the monitoring period. That would need to go to CAS as well but why was the granting excluded. Overall this is unacceptable given what is known.

I suggested on here months ago that the evidence should be handed to the City of London police. This should be done and i assume the Res12 guys can do this too.

Celtic asked for a review and didn’t get it. Instead the SFA threw us the bone that was the license issue. What i want Celtic to do now is call out the SFA for what they are, incompetent and corrupt, in a formal manner. Carefully worded but properly done and hitting the target. Maxwell may be new but he’s looking like a chip off the old block.

Standing up for the supporters and protecting the shareholders is the minimum we should expect. If this upsets some people and ruffles some feathers then so be it. It’s no good wanting to get along with everyone when we are being cheated.

  3. Super Cup NI Under-19 challenge match: Celtic 3-1 Manchester United

Two goals from striker Ewan Henderson helped Celtic come back from a goal down to beat Manchester United 3-1 in the Super Cup NI curtain raiser.

Ethan Laird opened the scoring for United after 52 minutes before the Scots hit two goals in three minutes.

Irish substitute Thomas Caffrey equalised in the 75th minute before Henderson capitalised on a goalkeeping error to put Celtic ahead.

He then finished off a late breakaway to seal the challenge match win.

The Under-19 match at the Coleraine Showgrounds opened the 2018 Super Cup NI, which starts on Monday.

Henderson the hero as Celtic persistence pays off

After a scoreless first half, it was United who struck first through attacking full-back Laird.

Celtic failed to clear after goalkeeper Ryan Mullan had saved superbly from United winger Largie Ramazani, and the ball made its way to right-back Laird, who had popped up on the left wing.

He showed the skills and footwork of a winger to cut inside a defender and drill a well-placed shot in at the near post.

The Glasgow giants had been well in the game until then and their persistence paid off when Caffrey curled a beautiful left-foot shot past substitute goalkeeper Jacob Carney to equalise.

hey were ahead two minutes later when a poor goal-kick by Carney was closed down in midfield and the lively Henderson, who made his senior debut in May, scored with a shot that deflected off Di’shon Bernard.

As United pressed for an equaliser, the Scots mounted a breakaway attack in the 87th minute and man-of-the-match Henderson slotted home under Carney.

United’s long history with the competition

After a two-year absence, United made a successful return to the Super Cup NI in last year’s challenge match when they defeated a Northern Ireland select side 1-0.

The club has a long history with the competition, formerly called the Milk Cup, reaching 13 finals and winning six titles in its 35-year history.

Former United full-back and current England women’s manager Phil Neville was in the crowd for the match.

He had hoped to watch his son Harvey, who is a member of the Manchester United squad, but he failed to get international clearance to play in the game.

Celtic’s only previous appearance in the Super Cup NI came in 2016 when they took part in a four-team Under-21 tournament, beating Real Sociedad but losing to Everton in the final.

The competitive action in the Super Cup NI minor, junior and premier sections gets under way on Monday.

The teams will take part in an opening parade through Coleraine town centre on Sunday at 19:00 BST, with a welcome ceremony at the Showgrounds where former Northern Ireland international Gerry Armstrong will open the event.

  4. Watched the under 19s against Man Utd on iPlayer and although Ewan Henderson will take the limelight, Kerr McInroy for me was head and shoulders above everyone else on the park. Ready made understudy to Brown, he won every tackle, read the game brilliantly and held on to the ball and distributed well when he had it.

Would like to see him gradually brought into the first team.

  7. See the “Same Huns, different name”protest march in Glagow yesterday was seriously curtailed to 100 ,and 30 minutes of racist speech.

Any ignorance by the Glasgow public as to why this demo was held in Glasgow in the 1st place, was easily put to rights when a spokesman for the demonstrators shouted out “NO SURRENDER”as they were being dispersed.

    Re link to DR record.

    ==

I couldn’t disagree more with the article. Celtic in real terms has actually spent £0 thus far during this transfer window. We received a huge windfall with VVD’s bonus payment and banked another +/- £4mill with SA’s transfer. A reported £9mill was spent on French Eddy, albeit that figure probably includes a percentage payment should he be transferred or if he receives a full international cap from France. All in all we have most likely banked money rather than spending it.

I am not advocating our spending for the sake of it but we, as fans, have noted our defensive frailties and have questioned why little has been done to improve this over the past couple of seasons? True we are not BR or part of the management team who make decisions on who we should sell and try to sign but we can, and should, question the logic of retaining certain individuals and signing others.

Central defence should be a priority (imo) we know that there have been constant rumours of Jozo being looked at by other teams; in fact it wasn’t that long ago we were trying to punt him off to Italy. We also know that he is injury prone – BR commenting on this and his unwillingness to play in some games yet he remains, he is now ineligible to play against Rosenberg due to suspension regardless?

Boyata, well we knew he was off to the world cup and that he would more than likely hope to use this platform to attract suitors from the EPL given his contractual situation and his stated desire to play in the EPL. Probably 50/50 if he stays or go. I believe if an EPL club makes an offer he will be offski. We also knew that his participation in the WC most likely meant he wouldn’t be available for the initial qualifications rounds of the CL.

Now the enigma that is Compper – question is why Brendan? If Compper were a race horse he’d be humanly euthanized. Did we really do our homework on this guy or was he seen as a cheap stop gap that was worth taking a risk on?

That leaves us with Young Ajer and Hendry at the heart of our defence. Both are relative novices and are still learning their trade regardless of ability.

Are Celtic really gambling a potential £30-40mill on an untried central defence? Have we identified signing targets that will actually strengthen and improve the squad? Or will we wait to see if we qualify for the CL proper before trying to sign someone? That is out with McGinn who we can actually afford to wait for if he wants to play for Celtic.

  14. Well Gerry even if I leave aside morale arguments for dealing with cheating and corruption the Celtic board have a legal obligation to protect its shareholders interests.

So why aren’t they doing it?

  15. Oglach,

Sorry,I have to disagree with you there on the CH issue. We did not know until the last minutel Boyatta was going to the WC,or how long he would remain there.Simunovic is not “Injury prone”more than anyone else in the squad.I have said before, just how many CHs do you or anyone else expect Celtic to carry?Hendry was bought as a CH.Ajer as we heard from BR today,is now a 1st pick. All being well, that would give us 3,1st picks, and Hendry as back up.To use the “Boyatta could be sold”at anytime, was not a factor before the WC.The same,if going by the rags, could be said of KT,and Moussa,so do we run out and buy replacements for them?

This season Brendan will play 3 at the back,we have already seen ,KT,pushed further forward, and Jamesey falling a bit deeper on the right.

How much do you think a CH,of the quality everyone seems to think we would need to make a difference, would cost?Would they come?

I agree that if we can punt Simunovic,we need a good replacement, same with Boyatta, but at this stage, our plans are up in the air.We just dont know.We bought Commper, probably to play for a season. An experienced pro.Look what happened to him.Same could happen to anyone we brought in.Look at Lewis Morgan.I am afraid thats football. When the clubs announce their squads, will be the time we can try something.I know it does not help us in the short term, but the way the market is,the way the fixtures are,the timing of the Window,we are swimming against the tide. Some understanding of the problem would be nice ,instead of what we have now.

  16. GFTB,

Interesting one. If a shareholder managed to get the case to court, that the board had failed in their duty to act in the best interests of the shareholders, they could only defend the case by arguing the opposite.

And that their approach re the survival of the SFA and Sevco is seen by them as their desired strategy.
