Russia and Ukraine set to merge leagues

784

In the most significant development towards the regionalisation of European leagues yet, Russian Premier League chief executive, Sergei Pryadkin, has announced plans to merge the Russian and Ukrainian leagues.  The plan has been driven by CSKA Moscow, Zenit St. Petersburg and Anzhi Makhachkala, who have formed a foundation committee.

Russian clubs already deal with the rigours of playing across a vast geographical area, so adding a huge nation like Ukraine would present further challenges, but top sides from Russian and Ukraine know that if they are to become genuine top tier clubs they will need to play in as strong a league as possible.  The plan is likely to involve feeder national leagues working below the confederated league.

Uefa president Michel Platini has already given the green light to the regionalisation of leagues.  The most important question for Scottish football fans, is whether SPL clubs would like to feed into a confederated British league.

The hoary old claim that SPL clubs need Celtic and Rangers has been shown to be a complete falsehood this year.  SPL clubs didn’t need Rangers and they don’t need Celtic either – if only those running our game had the balls to ask fans their views on this matter they might reinvigorate our game, instead of managing inevitable decline.

We are not wanted or needed by fans of Motherwell, Hibs, Kilmarnock, Inverness, Aberdeen or Dundee United.  These clubs are competing in the best SPL ever with only one problem, a bloated club from Parkhead.

If Scottish football wants a way forward which will see a well-attended and competitive top league, ask the fans, do they need or want Celtic?  Do they want an opportunity to feed into a regional league?  Any reorganisation which fails to take the views of the paying customer into account will be a disgraceful failure.

  1. The Boy Jinky @21:18 “We could have the drunkest away support in scotland on boxing day.. Would that be a world record”

Crazy scheduling – apart from some pre-Christmas cup games all the major European Leagues finished today.

TV dictates with no consideration for the travelling fan over the Festive Period!

  3. Paul67 can claim some rights to be a journalist but as for the rest of us hardly. My only claim is to be a genuine Celtic Supporter, Ill be 65 on Jan 9th live in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary and am facebook friends with 2 well known CQN’ers, I will stand over every post I make and have no problem at all with anybody knowing who I am.

Is clonmell where magners pick their wee hard apples… Do you drive the truck or work the press.

Suppose if you worked the press you could pass for a journo ….

Speak later in the week re Saturday

There is a night out mooted for after the match ….does that hold any interest for you ?

  10. The Boy Jinky – one of those buses is it.

The trips up to Aberdeen way back when they were a top team used to be the highlight of the season for me.

07:30 departure with buses axles groaning under the weight of the carry out.

Leaving Aberdeen at the stroke of mid-night. And bevvying all the way back.

And the only hint of trouble was getting the money out of some people.

I can remember men sleeping and missing it. They would spend the day tormented by the thought that so and so would be drinking their bevvy and they’d be in the cream puff for weeks.

See the Barca fans are trying to compete with us in the ‘noise / singing’ area……!!!

  12. Great commentary about how the Atletico – Barca game has had no animosity or the regular 7+ or so bookings every La Liga game.

Both teams are very happy that they are both doing things right IMO. Pressure makes people act badly, other things also. Atletico Madrid with only one booking against Barca would be quite unique in my short time of watching La Liga. ;)

    Great Game.

  13. Praecepta

It is a major inconvenience for the travelling fans

However over the holiday period it will be quite convenient for those who will get some respite from the Chrimbo TV and get to watch the match with family they might not see too frequently

My son is away at Uni …home for Christmas …we’re quite looking forward to the match on the tele as well as going to the home games over the festive period

A 3 pm KO with the game on the TV would suit all IMO

  14. PFAyr,

don’t jump the gun. I am waiting for Rangers to get a mention in the “Those we have lost this year” section of BBCSPOTY.

  15. Funny thing Jinky is that in Ireland the Plant & the actual drink is branded as Bulmers. Apparently the Bulmers name was patented in the UK so the drink is branded as Magners outside of Ireland. BT its amazing we ended up as Facebook friends, I know a guy with the exact same name as yourself who is living over in Scotland and was attending University in Edinburgh. When I got your Facebook friend invitation I actually thought it was from the lad I know. He is a Celt as well.

  16. Lastsaloon

I went up to the granite on a bus from george sq a couple of seasons back. Was surprised how much bevvy they still took.

Stopped off on way back down for a cargo too.

I always think of that night we won the league at tannadice and Busted lost at pittodrie.

That musta been an epic wake all the way back to glasgow for the darksiders … Poor wee souls ;)

  17. Barcelona are going 13 clear of Real Madrid. In post-match interviews, José Mourinho has said tonight that the league is over. Obviously it isn’t and he is pure at it, as ever, but his remarks have gone down very badly with a Real Madrid support that has already had enough of him. He is adopting a ‘No one likes me, I don’t care’ attitude.

  18. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!.. Ibrox belongs to the creditors on

What a goal from Messi….he is NOT human

  19. Sixteen league games, including tonight’s. Of a possible 48 points, Barcelona will have 46. Fifteen games won, one drawn.

Aye, beating Barcelona is not for the faint-hearted.

  20. Corky

I knew that story about magners / bulmers as went out with a dub lass a while back and she told me so

Nae luck with picking up BT by mistake on FB…. I actually picked him up at the WEB by mistake one sunday on my way to hamilton.

It was pre arranged .. Just one of my biggest mistakes ever ;)))))

( you know i dont mean that blanturr bhoy )

  21. TBJ for them no amount of drink would have done it under those circumstances. But the hangover would still have been in the post.

I wasn’t aware that the drivers still allowed a cargo on the bus.

Most times going up the East coast the hold of the bus is as as cold as any fridge.

  22. I think our discipline, despite an agenda to book our players at the earliest opportunity, has been incredible for a lot of years now.

  23. Corkcelt

sorry to have dissapointed with the Ipox trip.. o)

    and also the name game…

  24. PFayr, Bulmers in Ireland is precisely the same as Magners in Scotland. However there is a totally different Company in the UK called Bulmers who also produce cider. The English Bulmers is what you will find in pubs in the UK and that is a different cider, its noticably sweeter then the Irish product. I get confused myself particularly in Spain I could forget myself and ask for a Bulmers instead of Magners. Obviously I could drink either but would always support the home product.

  25. PF

No, there are games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the coming week, and then a break till after new year.

Barcelona are away to priests’ favourite, Real Valladolid, at 5.00 pm Celtic Park time on Saturday. That’ll be the end of that neat wee run.

Real Madrid are away to Málaga, against whom we might have been drawn in the CL by then, a couple of hours later.

Full time in Barcelona by the way.
