Russia and Ukraine set to merge leagues

784

In the most significant development towards the regionalisation of European leagues yet, Russian Premier League chief executive, Sergei Pryadkin, has announced plans to merge the Russian and Ukrainian leagues.  The plan has been driven by CSKA Moscow, Zenit St. Petersburg and Anzhi Makhachkala, who have formed a foundation committee.

Russian clubs already deal with the rigours of playing across a vast geographical area, so adding a huge nation like Ukraine would present further challenges, but top sides from Russian and Ukraine know that if they are to become genuine top tier clubs they will need to play in as strong a league as possible.  The plan is likely to involve feeder national leagues working below the confederated league.

Uefa president Michel Platini has already given the green light to the regionalisation of leagues.  The most important question for Scottish football fans, is whether SPL clubs would like to feed into a confederated British league.

The hoary old claim that SPL clubs need Celtic and Rangers has been shown to be a complete falsehood this year.  SPL clubs didn’t need Rangers and they don’t need Celtic either – if only those running our game had the balls to ask fans their views on this matter they might reinvigorate our game, instead of managing inevitable decline.

We are not wanted or needed by fans of Motherwell, Hibs, Kilmarnock, Inverness, Aberdeen or Dundee United.  These clubs are competing in the best SPL ever with only one problem, a bloated club from Parkhead.

If Scottish football wants a way forward which will see a well-attended and competitive top league, ask the fans, do they need or want Celtic?  Do they want an opportunity to feed into a regional league?  Any reorganisation which fails to take the views of the paying customer into account will be a disgraceful failure.

  1. Of all the shouts for a penalty yesterday, the BBC highlights at 3.18 to 3.30 show the biggest one, in the second half when Scott Brown shoots and Jim Goodwin pretends he’s a backy-in.

Honestly, I don’t even remember a very big appeal because by that time (second half) we had obviously all realised that there was no way Celtic were getting a penalty yesterday.

  3. PFayr – frustrating I know – you will always get the nutters. The more free you make a thing the more difficult it is. I’m pretty sure Paul67 feels like that very often and more than once about me. There was a time when Paul told me he was being personally attacked and intimidated because of me. He may have been right but it was never my intention and I cant be held accountable for idiots.

So to Paul tonight I apologise if this led directly to the nutters annoying him. It was never my intention – why would it ever be?

But look we cant live like this – being dictated to by idiots. The freedom the internet gives us is fantastic but it does mean we are exposed to them. We gotta take charge and shout them down. If not the sevconians will win.

I thought the SPOTY show was really good tonight – Bradly Wiggens was the right choice.

I share your really deep love of Celtic and I am not talking about Saturdays attendance in isolation.

The crowds are falling despite us really starting to look like a team that will develop strongly over the next few years.

I would, as has been commented over the last couple of days, slash the price of anyone coming from another Country to watch Celtic by 67% straight away. I have always been an advocate of this, posted a few times about it over the years. There may be people who would try and take advantage of this, if they ever did, and the amount would be miniscule, they are not real Celtic supporters.

  9. TTTT – I will never apologise for that. The Celtic Board, in my opinion have used debt to try and scare the Celtic support. As I have repeatedly said and I will continue to say, i have NEVER called for spending like the huns. But Celtic have repeatedly let us down in their lack of ambition. History will show what the huns did (well if we ensure it does – otherwise it will be airbrushed).

Two wrongs and two extremes are never right. Celtic are doing it again now – what they did with the £50 kids season books this year was unnecessary and totally misguided. Even worse is the silence on what is happenning to the GB. What is the purpose of that? What could it possibly be?

What the celtic board do looks good on paper (in the accounts) even if they are legally gerrymandering results. But if they live and die by accounts they are cheesing off their customers who are voting with their feet. If it was just commercial – where is the sense in that.

So they are failing even from a commercial persepective too.

  20. This season, even though Sevco aren’t in the SPL, shows you what Tony Mowbray went through. Watching his players assaulted. Watching blatent penalties denied. Character assassination, smirks and innuendo from the MSM headed by Jabba.

He was a broken man when he left Celtic. I think, genuinely, that he would have had a nervous breakdown had he stayed. They immediately started on NL, only to find someone tougher than any mix of them put together. Then the threats and intimidation procedures began. Bombs and bullets in the post, assaulted at a football ground, moving houses to keep his family safe. Referee’s strikes. Blatent lying from the “Football” authorities. He brought it all on himself.

On SPN and BBC and STV the cheerleaders are out for Sevco.

Through it all he can still smile.

Yet one result against Celtic has this place heaving with discontent. Instead of being glad at how lucky we are to have him, the snipers line up.

I include KevJungle in that list. If he’s a Celtic man my ar*e is a minor planet.

Neg Anon – I agree with you completely about the cessation of the £50 season books (huge knock-on effect to our good friends in The Kano Foundation) and also the Orwellian treatment of the GB within our stadium.

These are real negatives and I expect better from the people running our club.

At the same time, can you not acknowledge the fact that the club’s scouting and player development strategy is bearing fruit? It’s not rocket science and Ajax were doing it about 15 years ago, but asset management of some great young talent will secure the future of our club while bringing through even more young players.

This has not been achieved through luck, but by a sound business model. We can’t hope to emulate Porto in this repect, winning the UEFA Cup and CL while selling over £200M in talent, but we can aspire to it.

The odds are hugely stacked against us, but the current strategy has provided a platform for future progression.

I was screaming … Thats a red card in the english league and you dont even give yellow ya trumpet

  25. Petec – there are two things wrong about that post.

    1) The huns were soooooooooo arrogant that the self destructed. It became a racing certainty and they went well beyond the norm because they thought they were immune from the certainty of things. Their arrogance killed them.

    2) The Board did indeed have the game rigged against them. But the truth is they never had the balls to deal with it. Its still the same today. Pathetic.
