  1. How can you judge Scepovic?

Well I can judge Wakaso based on his performance. VERY Impressive. Stong, fast, does his defensive duties. Scored a superb goal. He’ll do very well for us.

I can judge Scepovic based on the way he looks at the defender when pretending to compete for a high ball. I can judge that he didn’t shield the ball and lost it too easily. I can judge that he does not have exhilarating pace. I can judge that he had a great attempt from a long distance. On balance he is not what we needed up front, or at least what I thought we were getting. A wee bit different than other strikers we have. But not a prolific goal scorer.

  2. Nye Bevans' rebel soldier on

I was not in favour of signing Craig Gordon,he has been

outstanding for us,hope he stays well for all our sakes.

Roll on Sunday, the GB back in place,so get yerselfs up

    to CP if you can.

  3. Ellboy - I am Neil Lennon, YNWA. on

Work rate, effort and Craig Gordon got us the result tonight. Just wish RD would have made better choices in terms of substitutions when the score was 1-2. The game was screaming out for either Kayal or Biton, yet he brings on Stoke and Tonev? Stokes fair enough for fresh legs but we needed an extra man and more protection in the middle of the park.

Liked what I saw of Wakaso he had some great touches and what a strike :) Hopefully he’ll develop more of a partnership with Izzy as together they could be a real threat to most teams in this competition.

Overall much more like it and against a team who I think we’re much better than

Maribor. On paper Salzburg away should have been the toughest game for us in this group, so a point was excellent an excellent result.

    Onwards and upwards.

    HH!

  4. jude2005 is Neil Lennon \o/ on

When my mate became a joiner he cld hang doors, cut wood, and fit cabinets on walls within 3 to 4 months. Some of those Celtic look as if they have never saw a ball before after years of training.

Ps Stokes shld NOT be at Celtic!!!

  5. Can’t say I am too disappointed with 2-2 away from home against the top seeds.

Craig Gordon kept us in it with some top saves. Midfield leaves a lot to be desired (no matter the combination) – Johansen (poor passer) McGregor (too lightweight and his naivety is showing) Commons (too slow). Overall we rode our luck!

Back 4 is always going to be under pressure unless someone provides decent cover for the full-backs and we have a defensive midfielder that can step into the breach when the CBs are dragged apart.

Like the tactics/format – up front continues to be a work-in-progress!

My minor disappointment was eased by having Celtic @+1. :-)

  6. Vmhan, Obviously a two all draw. They will probably feel they should have won it but on our 2nd half performance I feel we deserved the draw.

  7. Re Johansson

Anytime I have seen him live he puts in a shift , forces the other lot around him , his problem is that the rest of the midfield are not on the same wavelength.

The team needs time to gel …

    Hangingaboutanairportcfc

  8. Well, how did we get a point out of that?

If it hadn’t been for our keeper that could have been at least 6-2.

I’m not for binning RD yet but we’re making extremely poor progress. PL said last year that the CL was where Celtic belonged. For long spells tonight we looked well out of our depth in the EL.

I fear that it could be a long season.

  9. Good result from what was a so so performance. Passing at times shocking, too many long balls and midfield over run at times… again

Gordon – 10 – Brilliant performance, no chance with either goal, by some distance MOM. A couple of stunning saves.

Ambrose – 3 – Not a right back, not a centre mid, he is a centre half, if he isn’t playing there he shouldn’t be playing(assuming the right backs are fit). Feel sorry for him, but he was the weak link in that defence. At fault for the 1st. Needs a break.

VVD – 7 – Solid if unspectacular, seems to be taking on more of a leadership role, which he has to do with Denayer beside him.

Denayer – 7 – Can’t remember him putting a foot wrong. Again solid.

Izzy – 6 – Again pretty solid, didn’t get forward much, though put in a terrific cross for Commons. Careless free kick set up their 2nd.

Johansen – 3 – very poor. 2nd to every ball, and when he got a hold of it gave it straight back again. Great energy but needs more composure.

Brown – 7 – All action performance. Got forward and linked well but passing lets him down. Don’t think anyone was shouting shoot when the ball broke to him on the half volley 30 yards out, but hit it relatively well albeit fortunate to see it deflect in.

Wakaso – 7 – Terrific strike for the goal then fell out of the game the rest of the 1st half. Probably because we couldn’t retain the ball long enough to get it to him. Got more involved in the 2nd half with some promising moves, picked out McGregor brilliantly after a good run. 1st impressions, looks a player.

McGregor – 6 – Not his best game, like Wakaso struggled to get involved, did well for the 2nd goal.

Commons – 5 – Decent link up play with Brown on one or two occasions but doesn’t offer enough away from home in Europe or me.

Scepovic – 5 – Couple of nice touches but won nothing in the air, which was a problem since we kept punting it long. Couldn’t hold it up and bring others into play. Still nearly scored one of the best goals you’ll ever see with outrageous 40 yard effort from the touchline.

    Subs

Stokes – 4 – Worked hard without much support, could have done better with a few opportunities.

Tonev – 2 – Got shrugged off the ball too easily, and also gave the ball away every time he got it.

Kayal – N/A – only on for minute.

Deila – 6. Small improvements, team is still too open, think it would have been better having Bitton instead of Commons to shore up the midfield, and allowed Brown or Johansen to break from deep.

Having now seen the full squad at one stage or another, however limited, and cutting the new players some slack until they’ve had time to settle in, my best line up would be:

    ————- Gordon

    Lustig – Denayer – VVD – Izzy

    —————-Bitton

    ——-Brown——–McGregor

    Forrest——————–Wakaso

    —————Guidetti

Still think it’ll be mid October before they start to click.

  10. Hi Catman, did Woods recommend Craig Gordon? That’s interesting.

I genuinely feel that our goalkeeping dept is the strongest it has been. Even recently, we had Brian Scott hitting half volleys in at Packie. Nothing wrong in that, though hardly cutting edge.

Nowadays, things are far more scientific.

  11. 67 Heaven

I am over the moon with the score, and would have bitten your hand off for it

    But

Don’t let us kid ourselves that we played well

Team are being torn apart in many areas, right back ( Efe no support) Midfield ( big gap there with both defence and front) and trying to play with 2 wingers & KC offering little support, we have no shape, or players not following instructions ? You decide

But we are poor at the minute

    Hail Hail

  12. Joe Filippis Haircut on

SuperSutton. I will give Scepovic time but the two games I have seen him in he has had no real service.I think what confuses us that Rony didnt bring on the players to protect our two one lead. However, maybe he felt the best form of defence was to keep attacking them but unfortunately we gave away to many daft free kicks around our own box. H.H.

  13. Red Bull are a strong side. They press high and hard. No surprise they comfortably beat Ajax. Yet, many on here are upset at our draw. Bewildering. How often in recent years have we scored 2 away from home? I suspect under Neil we would have parked the bus and snuck a draw or been narrowly defeated. Me? I’d rather we try and have a go.

I suspect in time Kris will be moved aside. Far too slow and laboured. Young Forrest would improve us in that role.

Of the new boys, Wakaso has a bit spark albeit very raw. He can be developed into a good un. I like Scepovic. Can’t be too harsh on his performances so as he has had little to work with. But what an effort!!! Real vision.

Gordon is just a real find. Get him on a proper contract if he isn’t already.

  14. I’m happy with the result. Remember we are a team in transition. Our manager probably still doesn’t know his best 11 yet. Remember how long it took Lenny and he knew the club. I’m not sure about Ronny but we have to give him time to build his team then we judge him. Glass half full for now.

  15. Very good result from a pretty poor performance

We really need a proper defensive midfielder to play in front of the back four

When you play so many offensive players like McGregor, Wakaso, Commons -they need to win the game for you by making and scoring goals because when we don’t have the ball they don’t do much to win it back again!

That leaves Brown and Johansen out numbered in the middle of the park

We were far too easily cut open by a decent but hardly great team

CG saved our bacon loads of times – credit to him!

Ronys subs nearly paid off when Stokes could have put us 3-1 up but it didnt happen. We were given to many free kicks away around our own box and it was always going to cost us.Those on here tonight saying we shouldnt remark about the poor points in the Celtic game why not ? all football fans have there opinions. H.H.

    ……………….

We are lacking in confidence(imo)defensively at the moment and i believe we are making rash, desperate challenges at times when what is needed is for those players to stand up, make the attacking player make the 1st move, instead of our defender diving in rashly.

We are damaged goods right now and it may well take a few results to soothe that out of those players and make them less desperate…..and then more assured.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but a lot of fingers were quickly withdrawn from their keyboards tonight when that final whistle went.

  17. DubaiBhoy (nee LondonBhoy) on

We celtic fans have always had a romantic notion that we deserve to be at the top table, battling the giants of Europe, getting creditable draws away from home and blowing them away with the sheer passion at CP.

Well folks, I hate to burst your bubble but I was there for most of the glory days when we reached the uefa cup final and we rode our luck all the way to the final. We haven’t been on a fair financial footing since the 1970’s and it’s about time we realised and accepted it.

Yes it’s depressing that we think a 22 draw against the might city of Salzburg is depressing but we are where we are.

And by the way, anybody who voted yes today has condemned us to the poor table for the next 20 years ;-)

We’ll not quite as bad as that.

We score against Legia, Maribor, and Salzburg, all teams from our level but the format is where it repeatedly goes wrong, Aberdeen can come back as they proved on Saturday.

There will be a gazillion games like this under RD where if you recall Paul67’s earlier header, we don’t defend well enough over 90 minutes, especially for a Euro game.

RD’s problems should be focussed on how to win in Scotland, the EL is a bonus.

  19. Philbhoy

Didn’t know that this forum is exclusively your’s.

You and one or two others………set your standards low enough and you’ll always be happy.

Corkcelt. ………..does your head get sore carrying that halo?

  20. What a result!

We could even have made it 3-1 if Stokes had stuck away his half chance.

Now that is the good news over with.

Virtually with every game our shape is becoming worse.

Our left and right backs are virtually non-existent. Some one really needs to get a grip of Izaguire. Sometimes he isn’t even in the same screen shot as his opposition player….. and that’s widescreen. Even when he is with his man he seems incapable of stopping a cross coming in. What he was doing giving away the free kick for the equaliser is anyone’s guess. On the other side Ambrose is constantly picking up early bookings because of his poor positioning and we’re left watching the rest of the match through fingers any time he goes near the ball. Oh and finally both their distribution is completely awful.

The lack of cover for both of these areas of the park is bordering on the embarrassing. Huge areas of the park, in our defensive area, are prairies for hunting opposition players ready to take a bite out of us.

Strength on the ball all over the park is sadly lacking. Far too many players brushed off the ball. We are too easily panicked into giving the ball away. Movement is actually worse than last year with too many players passing and standing still.

The fundamental basics in team structure is lacking.

Far to many players seem isolated when they receive the ball.

Forwards can do nothing with no service.

Tactics are from the school team I used to play for.

    It really is that bad.

Still, roll on Sunday, and Motherwell at Paradise.

That’s the great thing about football there is always the hope that things will click in the next game like they did against Dundee United.

  21. Well we’ll take the result all day long.

But I was expecting more signs of progress than I’m seeing. We’ve no option but to give the management team time, and we should. But tonight we got out of jail, but for CG there was at least 2 goals in it.

Admittedly, this team were good last season, but they’ve struggled this season under their new manager. They were still crisper and more accurate in their passing.

We relied on individual play, I could see little organisation, and no results from any new style of football.

I hate to say it, an boot me in the baws if you like, but we’re not in a good place. Either RD’s message is not getting through, or he hasn’t got it.

  22. Pleased by Broonies performance tonight, what a difference he made in the midfield. Waikato looks the part as well. Chris Commons is a good PL player, but out of his depth in Europe, too slow by far. Some interesting substitutions

  23. DubaiBhoy (nee LondonBhoy) on

I think mcgregor was great tonight. He’s the most dangerous player in the team right now and his most valuable asset is his “I think I’m Pirlo” attitude. If only the rest of the team had the same bravery.

  24. Sorry, but the performance didn’t do much for me.

Saltzberg are a competent team but dominated possession and had a host of chances to finish us off.

We were starved of the ball yet on the few occasions we managed to string three or four passes together they looked vulnerable.

Great result but largely down to the excellence of Gordon and the tenacity of Brown…

  25. Very pleased with a point.

Pleased with Wasako and delighted with Gordon.

Van Dyke is a giant of a defender too

As someone who has been a massive Ronny Deila fan, dare I say it, I was reminded of Tony Mowbray tonight.

His team selection was way too open – he bowed to pressure and payed Commons which is seriously concerning about whether he is finding the shoes very big to fill.

When making substitutions – he saw fit to change the attacker with another attacker and then another attacking player for another attacking player when with every passing save from Gordon the game was crying out for more protection aka Kayal.

Had we gone 3 in the middle of the park I think we’d have worn them down and controlled the game more and gone on to win.

That said the football we played after both goals was pure panic football – we need to relax and play 0-0 after every goal.

  26. I only managed to catch 1st half unfortunately…

But 5 minutes after wakaso’s opening goal, I started to fear the worst…. Too many of our players looked like inferior human beings… For many it was a boy against a man…. Despite his good start to season, McGregor looked weak in possession. Ambrose, well simply not up to it. Commons too slow. Johansen, same problem as McGregor, too weak. Izzy looked amateurish at times…. Broony was scurrying about trying to do the job of 5 men.

However, 2 each is the result. So credit to them for hanging on in there. But we must get better

  27. Joe Filippis Haircut

I should add that i think the defence actually did ok tonight and a lot of the problems they face are caused by our midfield being chaotic at times…….but it all does lead to them being under pressure to do something to resolve that which can lead to them trying to get a tackle in just so somebody is stopping an attack.

  28. Salzburg have wealth of the Red Bull owner behind them and are a pretty good standard team. I didnt think we were much better than the Legia games. There is something just not right at the moment . Is it the system or the players or the fitness ? There needs to be a big improvment -soon.

  29. A draw away in Europe should be applauded,so why am i frustrated at our performance?Basic retention of the ball and passing to a team-mate was non-existent,Big Effie only needed to be in line with his other defenders to prevent their first goal and Izzy`s poor control results in the free kick for the equaliser, but hats off to Soriano for the execution,Wakaso strike was a peach, and Scepovic nearly embarrassed the Salzburg keeper with his attempt, good point, but frustrating as F%&^%>.
