Scotland’s fourth 6 in a row

294

Six league titles in-a-row was achieved for the fourth time in Scottish football yesterday as Celtic retained their championship, the third time the club reached this mark.

Jimmy Quinn, Celtic’s first superstar, powered the club to six-in-a-row between seasons 1904-05 and 1909-10, but that run ended there.

It would be 60 years before the feat would be repeated as the club’s greatest team made its final mark. This would be the final season of Lisbon Lions, Willie Wallace, John Clark, Bertie Auld, John Hughes and Stevie Chalmers. Ronnie Simpson had already retired. The Quality Street Gang picked up the mantle without skipping a beat. Although the club won their sixth successive league title, they failed to six League Cups in-a-row as Partick Thistle upset the odds in the final.

Celtic fans look back on this era as their nine-in-a-row, but in truth, those seasons were two eras. The first five years, ending at the European Cup Final in 1970, saw Celtic win five leagues, five League Cups, two Scottish Cups, the European Cup, as well as reaching that 1970 final in Milan. They regularly humbled top teams in this period.

The final four of the nine-in-a-row seasons saw Celtic eliminate (in total): Kokkola, Waterford, Copenhagen, Sliema Wanderers, Rosenborg, Turku, Vejle and Basel from European football, all of them from (then) semi-professional leagues. The team would run out of steam before 10-in-a-row.

Rangers got in on the act, winning their sixth successive title in 1994. Like the Quality Street Gang they would go on to add another three titles, but reflective history will always point to the ousting of the old Celtic board in March of that year as the point at which the tide began to turn.

This Celtic team is very likely to go on and achieve the illusive 10. Instead of signs of regression, they are only getting stronger. The apparently impossible objective – winning League, League Cup and Scottish Cup, undefeated in all, is now a serious possibility

They have a manager and a core of players who are a the top of their game and enjoying the challenge at Celtic. This may be Scottish football’s fourth six-in-a-row, but the current Celtic are by far the strongest team to reach this mark.

  2. DALLAS DALLAS WHERE THE HECK IS DALLAS on 3RD APRIL 2017 10:13 PM

Callum McGregor is a good squad player who will contribute over a season without ever being a regular. He can cover many positions so will always find himself in the match day squad. Over 30 appearances this season, over 100 in total without being a regular. Should get a decent run of games over next few weeks as the likes of Brown, Armstrong and Forrest get rested.

  3. At the start of the season I posted that I thought that Calum would get game time under Brendan as he was a BR kinda player, always looking to move into space after passing the ball or always making himself available for the ball, he may not be the best at it but at least he bothers unlike some.

Our under 20’s including our players out on development loans , beat Motherwell one nil at Cappielow tonight. Aiden Nesbitt scored our goal.

Well done to the young yins on getting to the final and keeping the feel good factor going.

They play sevco in the final according to our website.

Our players on developement loans can still play in our under 20’s games.

  5. Noticed on Phil’s site earlier that he requested via the FOI act info about the roofs at the bigot dome and they have refused on the grounds that it is not in the public interest and the info may be used for malicious purposes.

I have never heard so much pish in my life, what have they to fear ???????

Unless they are hiding something !!!

Gary 67 , I agree with your post about Callum . He doesn’t impose himself in a game the way Broonie , for example , does but he is a good squad player for us to have.

Its unlikely he will be a first choice player for us in midfeld but he does a good job, the majority of times he plays.

The exiled tim, the most malicious thing about the alleged roof problems , a supporter could be injured if the repairs are not carried out sooner rather than later.

A year or so back supporters were moved cos a piece of metal was hanging from one of the roofs, against Dumbarton IIRC, no sure, anyways, I very much doubt that the required works have been done to sort the problems.

The likes of John James has been harping on about it for long enough and now Phil has been refused a FOI request, something tells me there is a problem, but as ever they will get away with it cos they are the huns and the huns don’t have to follow the same rules and regs that everyone else does on or off the park.

Just like when the 66 died, it wisny their fault, they are an insult to parasitic scum and a half, I hope they burn for all eternity in hell.

The exiled tim, nothing has ever been or will be their fault.

After the 1961 accident , they took little responsibilty and did not follow all the recomendations of the Sheriff who headed the enquiry into the accident.

The families of those who lost their lives in 1971 were given very little.comensation from the club who wanted it to be paid from the public appeal fund set up.

  12. VFR800 IS NOW A MONSTER 821 on 3RD APRIL 2017 6:29 PM

It’s a harsh world. Mrs VFR works in Social Work; I want to collect her at 5 this afternoon – I call her when I’m close by and she waits at the gate.

This evening as I got there she was talking to a young lad of about 12 or 13. As I drew up, she put her bag in the car and told me she had to deal with something and took the boy back into the office.

20 minutes later she called and told me that he saw her ID badges as she was waiting and walked over to her and said “can you help me please”. “Of course” she said. He then burst into tears and said his mum couldn’t look after him or his wee brother and sister properly because she was really struggling. He’d walked up from an area about 1.5 miles away to see if he could find someone to help his family.

They are still in there just now arranging for some of the emergency team to go to his house and assess the situation to see what help the family needs. In the meantime they have made him a piece and given him a banana and a cup of tea as he is really hungry. I nipped round to get £20 out of the bank so they can get some food for the other kids.

The boy looked very clean and tidy, not the usual “waif and stray” usually depicted in these circumstances. I don’t know the events that led to this family’s situation, but what really hit home was that my 15 year-old grandson called me to ask if I could get him a Dominos pizza delivered.

It’s so sad that so many children, for so many and varying reasons, are still so vulnerable in our society.

I’m not ashamed to say I’m finding this hard to type on my phone because my eyes keep filling with tears. While I wait for my wife to finish I will say a wee prayer for the family.

    ——-

Apologies but I’ve been busy and only saw your post, I’ve no doubt there have been several replies.

My heart breaks but imagine dealing with this while also having 32 other children to deal with.

    That’s the increasing reality.

  13. Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of Oxfam International, said:

“It is obscene for so much wealth to be held in the hands of so few when 1 in 10 people survive on less than $2 a day. Inequality is trapping hundreds of millions in poverty; it is fracturing our societies and undermining democracy.

“Across the world, people are being left behind. Their wages are stagnating yet corporate bosses take home million dollar bonuses; their health and education services are cut while corporations and the super-rich dodge their taxes; their voices are ignored as governments sing to the tune of big business and a wealthy elite.”

Oxfam’s report shows how our broken economies are funnelling wealth to a rich elite at the expense of the poorest in society, the majority of whom are women. The richest are accumulating wealth at such an astonishing rate that the world could see its first trillionaire in just 25 years. To put this figure in perspective – you would need to spend $1 million every day for 2738 years to spend $1 trillion.

The changing structure of the jobs market and associated decline of collective bargaining makes things worse. Various factors have led to the decline in the proportion of workers who are members of unions, and the IMF has found a relationship in advanced economies between this decline and the increasing share of incomes of the top 10%.98 99 In Denmark, an employee flipping burgers for Burger King earns $20 an hour, based on a collective bargaining agreement; a US employee in the same company, but denied the bargaining opportunity enjoyed by her Danish colleague, gets just $8.90.

Big difference between the union represented worker and their fellow worker in US…

A lot of the immigrants are fleeing from war in Syria and Afghanistan ( countries the west invaded BTW ) , of course they will find living in the UK more desirable.
