Scotland’s fourth 6 in a row

294

Six league titles in-a-row was achieved for the fourth time in Scottish football yesterday as Celtic retained their championship, the third time the club reached this mark.

Jimmy Quinn, Celtic’s first superstar, powered the club to six-in-a-row between seasons 1904-05 and 1909-10, but that run ended there.

It would be 60 years before the feat would be repeated as the club’s greatest team made its final mark. This would be the final season of Lisbon Lions, Willie Wallace, John Clark, Bertie Auld, John Hughes and Stevie Chalmers. Ronnie Simpson had already retired. The Quality Street Gang picked up the mantle without skipping a beat. Although the club won their sixth successive league title, they failed to six League Cups in-a-row as Partick Thistle upset the odds in the final.

Celtic fans look back on this era as their nine-in-a-row, but in truth, those seasons were two eras. The first five years, ending at the European Cup Final in 1970, saw Celtic win five leagues, five League Cups, two Scottish Cups, the European Cup, as well as reaching that 1970 final in Milan. They regularly humbled top teams in this period.

The final four of the nine-in-a-row seasons saw Celtic eliminate (in total): Kokkola, Waterford, Copenhagen, Sliema Wanderers, Rosenborg, Turku, Vejle and Basel from European football, all of them from (then) semi-professional leagues. The team would run out of steam before 10-in-a-row.

Rangers got in on the act, winning their sixth successive title in 1994. Like the Quality Street Gang they would go on to add another three titles, but reflective history will always point to the ousting of the old Celtic board in March of that year as the point at which the tide began to turn.

This Celtic team is very likely to go on and achieve the illusive 10. Instead of signs of regression, they are only getting stronger. The apparently impossible objective – winning League, League Cup and Scottish Cup, undefeated in all, is now a serious possibility

They have a manager and a core of players who are a the top of their game and enjoying the challenge at Celtic. This may be Scottish football’s fourth six-in-a-row, but the current Celtic are by far the strongest team to reach this mark.

Enjoy every minute of it, your support has made it possible.

  1. Would like to see Gamboa and Izzy, get game time on Wednesday.Lustig still not filling me with confidence at the moment. All the focus must now be on the Semi Final. Some players, including Broony need rested.Eric in for Joze.Hopefully Rogic gets a fair bit of game time.

Thought Paddy and Sinclair were brilliant together. Two brilliant assists and a wonder goal for the wee man.He will only get better.I am positive BR is working on this. The parade around Celtic Park when the Trophy is presented, the GB Tifo, and hopefully a lap of honour with the cup at Hampden, just might be the things to persuade him to stay.He might never get days like that again.

Brendan Rodgers has been very clear about 2 things:

    1. Players will get a rest after the cup semi-final and not before. He has said we need to go into this with momentum.

    2. He is going nowhere in the short-term; he couldn’t be happier in his footballing or personal life than he is at the moment and this is only the start.

IMHO, the more games Simunovic and Boyata play together, the better they will become. I am sure if big Jozo had been in against the sticky’s then Hill wouldn’t have got an equalizer.

Cambhoy, apart from Provan, those you listed were all Celtic fans growing up, that’s the thing that gets me. I don’t want them to be like that bumbling buffoon Johnstone about sevco but a bit of praise for us is not too much to ask for.

*bfdj was an arab growing up like his family. I love his “story” about big Jock sitting in his car at the end of the street while the deidco scout was in his hoose offering him signing terms. Good job he has a big bawface to handle his pinocchio nose.

Afternoon everyone. Still buzzing after yesterday and can’t wait to get to Paradise for the first time this season on Wednesday night!

Couldn’t help but notice the utter desperation within the media for Brendan to go back to “The Greatest League In The World” TM. The Scottish journalists obviously think it’s the most realistic way that 10IAR will be stopped and the English journalists are so arrogant that they can’t possibly fathom that Brendan would want to stay in Scotland for anything more than 12-24 months.

    Here’s the thing though…

Brendan is 44 years of age. He could quite easily have at least 16 years left of management in him (if not more). Giving 5 years of his managerial career (like Martin O’Neill) to the club he supported as a boy is not an unrealistic idea by any means. He would still only be 49 and could walk into a host of other European jobs (stress the word European. I could easily see Brendan taking over at a club like Seville, Borussia Dortmund, Monaco etc).

He likes to see players develop and grow. He reiterates this in almost every interview he conducts (not a coincidence). He talks about leaving a legacy and building our Club (or holding company vehicle, whichever you prefer ;0) into a Champions League club in every aspect of what we do.

For the hurting media and fans of other clubs I’m afraid this doesn’t sound like a 12-24 month plan.

Perhaps 3-4 years might be more realistic but are you telling me Brendan would walk away after achieving 8 or 9IAR?

The way the modern game is now there are not that many opportunities for people to leave a legacy in the game and especially not with their favoured boyhood Club. Brendan will know that if he were to stay at the Club for 5 years and achieve titles 6-10 (and 48/52 overall) that he would go down in folklore at this Club forever. Whatever else he would achieve in his career and in his life he would probably never outrank it in terms of the joy and meaning it would bring to supporters.

I think Brendan knows this. Just as important I think our Board know it. Remember that for Peter Lawwell this could well be his legacy too. For all of the stick they’ve received over the last 10-15 years (some of it entirely deserved) they will know that if they back our manager properly he may just cement their legacy also.

It’s all in place and all we need to do as a Club is push the foot on the pedal and don’t look back or stand still. I think our biggest threat to not achieving this legacy is complacency. I don’t think it’ll be the manager that falls victim to it but the board might (hopefully not for the reasons I mentioned earlier).

Anyway, what a time to support this great Club of ours. Like previous posters I think back to primary school (91-98) when me and a handful of other boys were ridiculed weekly by the same group of kids (and adults for that matter!)

I have no doubt this continues today, especially in the best wee bigoted country in the world.

  23. After a great weekend of sport of varying codes congrats to Brendan and his squad for clinching yet another league title in style. The team has played some wonderful entertaining football this season with the games against Man City in the Champions Lge been the standouts for me.

It’s crucial that Brendan can keep his best players at the club to fullfil his European ambitions.

The recent rumours circulating that Everton’s James McCarthy was on Celtic’s radar had me thinking that this player would really prosper under the coaching skills of Brendan Rodgers.

Croppybhoy , sorry for not replying last night about that daft roof set up at Tynecastle.

The terracing that was left uncovered was used by their own fans so you would have thought they would have extended the roof to cover their support.

My first trip to Tynecastle was the 4 3 game in November 1976 , Danny and Kenny were imense in that game , and we were under the covered bit opposite the stand. No segregation in those days.

The most bother I have seen at Scottish grounds when we played there, was Easter Road and Tynecastle.

Out of the many times I went to our games v the deid club at Ibrox , I only saw bother at two of them.

  28. Evening all.

My auld Dad’s opinion of Hearts and Tynecastle: their support is worse that the lot from Govan and he hated going to the ground.

Has Mrs Budge apologised to Mickael Lustig and demanded those who abused him be banned from Tynecastle forever and a day? Doubt it, given her record.

  29. From Embramike`s 5:03 link:

” Rangers FCs liquidation allowed for the clubs ‘business, history and assets’ to be sold off. This is precisely what happened, and was sold to Sevo Scotland Ltd. The historic football club, Rangers Football Club plc, formally ceased to exist when liquidation was completed and the assets of the club sold to Sevco Scotland Ltd. A new body has been formed which uses a similar name as its historic predecessor, but whether this new firm is a continuation of it is subject to debate. ”

If : “The historic football club, Rangers Football Club plc, formally ceased to exist when liquidation was completed ” , why is it `subject to debate` ” whether this new firm is a continuation of it ” ?
