Scotland’s fourth 6 in a row

294

Six league titles in-a-row was achieved for the fourth time in Scottish football yesterday as Celtic retained their championship, the third time the club reached this mark.

Jimmy Quinn, Celtic’s first superstar, powered the club to six-in-a-row between seasons 1904-05 and 1909-10, but that run ended there.

It would be 60 years before the feat would be repeated as the club’s greatest team made its final mark. This would be the final season of Lisbon Lions, Willie Wallace, John Clark, Bertie Auld, John Hughes and Stevie Chalmers. Ronnie Simpson had already retired. The Quality Street Gang picked up the mantle without skipping a beat. Although the club won their sixth successive league title, they failed to six League Cups in-a-row as Partick Thistle upset the odds in the final.

Celtic fans look back on this era as their nine-in-a-row, but in truth, those seasons were two eras. The first five years, ending at the European Cup Final in 1970, saw Celtic win five leagues, five League Cups, two Scottish Cups, the European Cup, as well as reaching that 1970 final in Milan. They regularly humbled top teams in this period.

The final four of the nine-in-a-row seasons saw Celtic eliminate (in total): Kokkola, Waterford, Copenhagen, Sliema Wanderers, Rosenborg, Turku, Vejle and Basel from European football, all of them from (then) semi-professional leagues. The team would run out of steam before 10-in-a-row.

Rangers got in on the act, winning their sixth successive title in 1994. Like the Quality Street Gang they would go on to add another three titles, but reflective history will always point to the ousting of the old Celtic board in March of that year as the point at which the tide began to turn.

This Celtic team is very likely to go on and achieve the illusive 10. Instead of signs of regression, they are only getting stronger. The apparently impossible objective – winning League, League Cup and Scottish Cup, undefeated in all, is now a serious possibility

They have a manager and a core of players who are a the top of their game and enjoying the challenge at Celtic. This may be Scottish football’s fourth six-in-a-row, but the current Celtic are by far the strongest team to reach this mark.

  1. See that Brendan Rodgers ….imagine lying to me about his age, what’s he like ?

    VFR800,

    Your wife deserves POTY !

A MASSIVE THANK YOU to all concerned, I sincerely hope that Mother of those kids ( Who’s a human being in the 1st instance), receives the help and advice she deserves ?

  2. Several years ago, I and other workmates, worked in a great wee job in Glasgow ( MID 1990’s). 40 hours a week, but the drawback was the low wages ( Before minimum wages).

Most of us were in the same boat, especially guys like me who lived alone.

This was when I first became aware of a completely unacceptable situation with people like me holding down a full time job, but being totally reliant on Housing Benefit, because of my rent and the low wages.

AFTER Income Tax and Nat Ins, I was left with something like a take home pay of £110.00 per week, for 40 hours. I was forced to apply for housing Benefit from my Local Council, to make it worthwhile for me to work !

I would get a ” Boat fae Cairo – GIRO”, each month , which just about covered two weeks of my monthly rent. If I didn’t receive that, there was no point in me working, as after paying bills, and travelling expenses to work etc, etc, I was actually better off unemployed, and without the need to get my ass out of bed 5 days a week.

Due to lack of work, some of us were made redundant for a spell.

After about 3 months or so, my former boss phoned me one Thursday and advised me that more work was contracted, and did I want my old job back ?

i was over the moon, and replied “Yes”.

Knowing of my situation with the low wages and relying on housing benefit, he then asked, ” Are you sure it’s worth your while coming back to work Jimmy” ?

I said “No it’s not, but I need to work, cos I’m sitting here on this Thursday lunchtime watching feckin Neighbours” !

I started back the next day, and of course I was forced to go thru the whole process of claiming Housing Benefit rebate once again.

I often said during those days that it was a NATIONAL disgrace that anyone who is holding down a full time, can only maintain that employment by STILL claiming feckin benefit !

What a joke, and I don’t suppose much has changed….or has it ?

The social services are there to help,as are organisations like those where BLANTYRETIM works.

Their workload is already enormous-as my kid sis could attest-and cuts left right and centre are only making it worse.

We could talk about it all day,but no-one is doing anything to ease the burden of the poor,or of those charged with assisting them.

Mrs VFR and loads like her don’t work to a clock. They can’t. Their working week will most often include much unpaid overtime. And quite a lot of digging into their own pockets.

    Because they care.

In a country where our leaders clearly don’t give a fig.

Any company who pays wages which mean their employees are eligible for state top-ups is robbing the country and their workers and should be held to account by their customers.

  6. A lot of TORY Benefit cuts start this week, Millions will be affected.

Funny how those Tory MP’s ( and some others) who vote for such disgraceful cuts, NEVER appear willing to discuss and implement CUTS to MP’s allowances….strange ?

  8. BBC News just now……Thersea May has STOPPED “Cadburys” from using from using the word ” Easter”, in their tv advert for Easter Eggs.

  9. Davie Moyes and giving a female reporter a “slap” ?

  10. Until 2009, when I was completely unsupported by my local Labour Council ( and 1/2 Labour MP’s) and my joke of a Trade Union “UNITE” ( Who hung me out to dry by playing Politics with my future), I had voted Labour my all of my adult life. It NEVER occurred to me since I was of voting age to vote for any other party.

However, in recent years and especially now with feckin Brexit, I will be voting for The SNP.

I am sick and tired of Tories, putting the boot into the disabled and the poor especially, and in the very same breath those Tory MP;s are standing up in Westminster and Holyrood ( ( feckin Ruth Davidson), telling the nation what a wonderful job the Government at Westminster are doing ???????

The SNP has many faults, but I now truly believe it’s time to cut and run from a Tory Government that doesn’t give a feckin toss, except to their own.

  11. ME 11.21am,

I got it wrong, it’;s the Natural Heritage (?), who have stopped Cadbury’s from using the word “Easter”…….I still wouldn’t tire of slapping that On the Buses Blakely Lookalike Thersea May,

Well when you’ve finished running you’ll find yourself at the bottom of a huge fiscal hole.

And if you think the poor will be better off as a result then life has taught you nothing.

Still, you’ll have a flag to waive.

This is from the comments section regarding BR’s thoughts today :

“Brendan Rodgers needs to read this article JJ and realize that the corrupt titles need to be put right. That Sevco needs to fess up to being a titleless new club. Only then can a new model rivalry develop.

It won’t happen with the bent characters at the SFA and SPFL either, nor the bent editors and hacks in the press.

Nice thoughts from Brendan but tangible corrections and changes need made.”

There a helluva lot of accuracy in your posts today.

    Others’ too.

The abhorrent changes to tax credits, working age benefits and state pension age are amazing, in so much that they are going away with it.

The Child tax credits changes are anti-life.

State pensions are next. Anyone under the age of 55 just now needs to be aware of their plans and objectives. There was a recent consultation and report. The recommendations for future generations are not good.

Jimmy, your experiences in the past are being remodelled under Westminster’s self serving mechanisms.

I’ve first hand, low level insight into which branch of government is looking out for folk, just now. we are a little sheltered by Holyrood, were they have influence.

Your voting intentions are right in many ways.

Whether Scotland can sustain itself economically who knows?

  16. VFR

Shocking situation but sadly it is an all to frequent occurrence today.

    Big Jimmy

A very common situation even today. Do I work for less or do I not wok for more? A decision being made by many even today.

Many like you will take the hit to get out of bed in the morning but sadly the situation is also breeding others to take what they get and stick with being unemployed.

The national government’s priority is to get people in work on less reducing their unemployment stats and their financial burden, laying that burden on the local authorities to take up mainly by increasing Council Tax to cover or reducing services in other areas and at the same time dealing with reduced national payments to local authorities.

It’s shameful but in my opinion orchestrated at government level.

But let’s face it, both the issues raised by VFR and yourself are caused by immigration. There is no other reason. just immigration.

    MWD

  17. VFR,

heartbreaking to read to read your post last night……well, it would be if it weren’t so commonplace, and something which we’re all sadly aware of. More and more stories and reports of how many people are ‘living below the poverty line’ and it’s hard for a lot of people to grasp just what that means. I suspect there are many here who have been in a similar position growing up. i know i have been, being brought up in a single parent family, with a working mother, doing her best to support and bring up a family of four. fortunately, we had a big family, who were able to help on occasion, and we also benefitted from the help of the SVde P through our church.

Many aren’t as fortunate as we were, and thankfully, the young man who spoke to your wife had the balls to do something, and wasn’t burdened with too much pride to prevent him asking a stranger for help, but my God, how desperate must he have felt.

just wondering if there’s anything we can do to help ? it might be a bit of a hollow gesture, and perhaps something the family might not be willing to accept, but maybe some of us might want to make a donation of a small amount which might help pay a fuel bill, buy some shopping,or some clothes for the kids, or maybe buy them something nice which they might not otherwise be able to afford.

We scored five great goals on Sunday and wrapped up the Flag.

However, overall, it wasn’t one of our best team performances of the season.

I offered the excuse of a post International slump and I still think that.

Scott Brown’s post match ridicule of his performance supports my theory, but also emphasises his value to the team.

    When he plays, we play.

    SB PotY for me.

Was it the 3% cut in Corporation Tax, the only economic policy contained in the Great White Paper, that first convinced you of the SNP’s determination to tackle poverty?

Now dropped, just like the oil price, another “highlight” of their failed economic case.

  20. Ernie

It appears to me that there is a huge fiscal hole with UK finances as it stands, unless of course the Tories have just paid off the £1.73 trillion debt which is over 85% the national GDP costing around £50 billion annually to finance it. As there is a financial deficit we are pretty much borrowing to pay the national debt annually.

This is what a huge fiscal hole looks like!

    We are currently living it!
