Scott Brown sat down

1251

You know what Dundee United really need?  Scott Brown to turn up at Hampden on Sunday with a point to prove. We’ve complained for years about the way media scrutiny falls haphazardly on Celtic but God help us if we ever acquire the cosy relationship others cultivate in order to avoid the light scrutiny required to keep them healthy.

Celtic players are allowed to drink before their day off (as is the manager).  Scott didn’t punch anyone, didn’t threaten anyone, didn’t drive under the influence, didn’t speak inappropriately and didn’t break club rules.

Had he not sat down this would never have been a story, even if he’d had an additional 10 drinks.  ‘Scott Brown sat down’ is the story – and that’s the worst they can come up with.  Paying someone £100 for a photograph and spending 30 minutes writing about it has to be the cheapest cover in publishing history.  It doesn’t pass the ‘news’ test, it is celebrity gossip.

Pin it to the dressing room wall and he’ll be Man of the Match on Sunday, you can bank on it.

CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner is tonight!  Soooooooo excited.  See you there.

    Good Evening.

We are all only too well aware that there are serious errors contained within the Lord Nimmo Smith judgement.

However, even at it’s weakest it does contain some damning comments.

    For example:

“We nevertheless take a serious view of a breach of rules intended to promote sporting integrity. Greater financial transparency serves to prevent financial irregularities. There is insufficient evidence before us to enable us to draw any conclusion as to exactly how the senior management of Oldco came to the conclusion that the EBT arrangements did not require to be disclosed to the SPL or the SFA. In our view, the apparent assumption both that the side-letter arrangements were entirely discretionary, and that they did not form part of any player’s contractual entitlement, was seriously misconceived. Over the years, the EBT payments disclosed in Oldco’s accounts were very substantial; at their height, during the year to 30 June 2006, they amounted to more than £9 million, against £16.7 million being that year’s figure for wages and salaries. There is no evidence that the Board of Directors of Oldco took any steps to obtain proper external legal or accountancy advice to the Board as to the risks inherent in agreeing to pay players through the EBT arrangements without disclosure to the football authorities. The directors of Oldco must bear a heavy responsibility for this. While there is no question of dishonesty, individual or corporate, we nevertheless take the view that the nondisclosure must be regarded as deliberate, in the sense that a decision was taken that the side letters need not be or should not be disclosed. No steps were taken to check, even on a hypothetical basis, the validity of that assumption with the SPL or the SFA. The evidence of Mr Odam (cited at paragraph [43] above) clearly indicates a view amongst the management of Oldco that it might have been detrimental to the desired tax treatment of the payments being made by Oldco to have disclosed the existence of the side-letters to the football authorities.”

Taking that paragraph alone and reading it in its most generous form, it says quite clearly that the former board members of Oldco Rangers were cavalier in the extreme in not taking the appropriate legal or accountancy advice about whether or not the EBT payments to the players and their non disclosure to the SFA was legal or otherwise.

Further, it goes on to say that the board new fine well that the disclosure of the side letters may well be detrimental and so they they deliberately chose not to disclose the same to the SFA lest such a course of action bring about footballing sanctions or worse.

That course of action was quite deliberate.

Today’s, yesterday’s and tomorrow’s story is not about the resignation of Chris Graham.

    Nor even his appointment.

It is about the fact that there are those who ignore the bare faced audacity that some have to go about their business and seriously expect the footballing public to welcome the return of some of those directors who were so heavily criticised by Nimmo Smith.

Paul Murray is an accountant and labels himself as a turnaround and insolvency specialist.

Why did he not provide the necessary legal and accountancy advice that was so blatantly missing. He was a non exec; he could have made his own enquiries: perhaps he did and just stayed silent or was silenced.

Dave king labels himself as a financial adviser and specialist – and going by the money he has made he might well be considered a very successful one.

Why did he say nothing? had he never heard of EBT’s or know how they work or that they needed strict compliance to be legal?

No, what we have here is a board of incomeptents at best and crooks at worst who have the audacity to return as if they were never at fault or bear any responsibility.

And the foolish will welcome them and the press will simply ask nothing, say nothing and do nothing.

As for the non disclosure of the side letters well that fall under the jurisdiction of the officer who was in charge of football registration and compliance.

That was Andrew Dickson latterly and he is also an accountant.

The news of the day and the week is that nothing has been learned by these people or anyone else.

    Foll me once ……….

I hope everyone going to CQN11 tonight has a great time and enjoys themselves thoroughly. Sadly I cannot attend alas.

  12. My friends in Celtic,

The bigger picture of Graham’s departure is :-

Forget about any fan respentation to board level for virtually any club. I do not by any means condone his tweet. He has been binned for one tweet and yet he has made many, many equally offensive tweets for a long time.

Are we considered “fair game”. We must assume that it is perfectly acceptable to spout racist tweets to certain sections of society, but to quote a respected poster he made one racist tweet to another section of soceity then Boom

Moving back to my first sentence:- it will take a saint with an unblemished past for any fan to sit on the board now.

HH to all, enjoy the night.

  13. Hope plenty of money is raised tonight, I chipped in a couple of weeks ago, that is more important than front page or back page stories.

Do not really care if Scott Brown was drunk or sober on Wednesday or Saturday or whenever. He will probably the type of guy who gets hammered after 4 bottles of Bud or whatever poor imitation of a beer he fancies. Athetes tend to get pissed easily and recover quickly in my experience of knowing a few, I think that it was Busby who said that footballers should avoid drinking and fighting as they were not very good at either.

The newspaper in question will of course be quick to apologise if they get it wrong, no? So what , ignore them. Any Celtic fan ( or decent thinking person) should never read the Sun or Record let alone buy them.

Any decent thinking person should also get a life instead of getting worked up about whatever guys post on here. It’s an open forum, open to all sorts of wing nuts, sad sacks, currant buns, plastic Provos and all other forms of life we would rather not share space with.

However this community does a lot of good when it focuses on occasions like tonight, just annoys me when it gets all sanctimonious.

We are lucky we can debate with each other and should be able to do so without cheap name calling or even worse a weird type of blog bullying as we bleed our fingers in rushing to verbally kick someone.

Enjoy the evening; me, I will be doing family taxi duty followed by a glass of Chablis, then looking forward to my seat at Hampden on Sunday.

Sectarian tweets not limited to anti Islamic ones.

    Finances in freefall.

So for balance the rags print a negative story about our captain.

Remember we have seen these kind of stories in the past usually before beating the deadco.

Do they think this will rescue their failing circulation numbers?

Do they think it will demoralize our team?

    Do they think we care?

As long as Captain \o/ lifts the cup on Sunday this will be chip wrapper by Monday, if not before.
