SCVO’s messy rant about Boruc, “our” Weiss and Catholic schools

1752

My attention was drawn to the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) blog yesterday, also covered by Joe O’Rourke on the Association site.  SCVO Director of Pubic Affairs, John Downie, writes about the “proposed bill on sectarianism” but seems to get muddled in his role as a director of SCVO and using SCVO resources to speak as a Rangers fan; in this instance blaming Catholic schools for sectarianism.  How ironic.

Downie writes:

“We’ve previously seen Rangers fans outraged by Celtic goalie Artur Boric crossing himself during games but less bothered – obviously – by about our own players (like Vladimir Weiss last season) doing the same thing.”

“Our own players”!  Is SCVO some closed shop where they talk about Artur Boruc as a “Celtic goalie” and Vladimi Weiss as one of our “own”?

So far, so disturbing, but Downie then uses the article to ride to the rescue with:

“The solution:

Personally, as someone who grew up in the East End of Glasgow and lives in the west of Scotland, I agree with some of what Conservative MSP John Lamont says.  In my opinion one key causes of sectarianism is Scotland continuing to have separate denominational and non-denominational schools.”

So, if only we didn’t have Catholic schools, players like Artur Boruc and “our” Vladimir Weiss would be able to cross themselves free of harassment.  Bizarrely, Downie’s article is subtitled “treating the symptoms not the causes”.  I don’t think he was trying to suggest it’s best to treat the symptoms.

The cause of intolerance is not differences in ethnic, religious or sexuality, it is ignorant bigots.  It is ludicrous to suggest tackling intolerance by assimilating people into some mono-culture.  It’s downright dangerous to blame a minority for intolerance of, and by, them, a sentiment that will only fan the flames of hatred.

The European Examiner reports that various politicians have called for Mr Downie’s removal but SCVO chief exec, Martin Sime, apparently sees nothing wrong in SCVO running a blog discussing one of “our” Rangers players and the “Celtic goalie”, while simultaneously blaming educationally successful faith schools for sectarianism.  SCVO has offered a metaphorical No Surrender to resignation calls.

A brief comment for those who don’t live in Scotland….  Attitudes like this once prevailed but are harder to find these days.  We are a modern, progressive, society, for the most part.

  6. doesn’t anyone else think that he might have a point about the schools… Separation only causes a lack of understanding. Been at work so not read all the comments. But I do think a Scottish school system stripped of religious nature might be a better one, in the same breath abolishing private schools and having a classless system would help too.

    He’s backl!

Massive post. In all good senses.

WE are Celtic, we were founded for charitable and good purposes, we play football and seek to entertain wherever we go. We welcome all visitors, all opponents on the park and off, and we play within the rules of football and life. We support with a song and a smile, and in numbers throughout every corner of the world.

On that basis, we are at least among the best, if not the best, at what we do.

That should be our message and our marketing strategy in 2012– it is a message and a claim that belongs to no one else!

    Put that alongside

Whatever part of my club depends on Rangers is a part I am willing to lose

    and

Scottish football has only been competitive in the last ten seasons because Rangers have cheated.

No, I do single bets, but I always do an acca as well, just in case…the combined is about 40/1

I have been turned on to the goals thing, seems good money there as well, but as ever hard work and just your Donald, but more can be made if you can get it right especially if you do a few trebles and more.

I have been experementing with accas the last week or so and have hit the bar a few times, only a matter of time, small money for good returns.

I agree with what you are saying. An article like that would never be penned here thats for sure but the campaign to get a rangers newco into the spl is mainly driven by the bigoted media here, im not so sure that would carry enough clout. There would be so many legal issues , Im sure eufa wont be too happy either and I honestly think that when this all kicks off rangers will be the least of the SFA s worries as I just think it is gonna open a very big can of worms, least of all the granting of the euro licence to them. I live in hope !!!!!! Jelly and Ice cream ?

  11. thommybhoyd,

    naw,

as a CQN’r hinted earlier, how can you make a tolerant country by trying to mould everyone into the same kind,we should be a country that allows and respects all kinds, all cultures, all religions and none, if not then we dont ever deserve to be independent, and we just follow the route that certain sections of society want to drag us down.

  13. BRTH-that was a great post. The best thing for Scottish football would be for Rangers to disappear, and “managers” like Brown, Butcher, and their ilk to go with them. The referees need replaced by people who love football and will not allow a good player to be kicked out of a match. Repair the whole coaching system from top to bottom. Maybe then Scotland will get another Jinky, Baxter,Law, Dalgleish.

Don’t like betting on Celtic, supersticious that way, the hun, have made good money from them the last few years in play, esp when they go a goal down, the cheats with the whistles and the like, but they are getting so bad now not worth it.

  16. hoopy-do,

I get the need for individual beliefs. It’s obviously hugely important. But there is an argument that says the biggots might learn a thing or two from exposure to different beliefs their whole lives, from an early age.

That quality article needs to become editorial stuff before we can start feeling like we are sitting on any seat on the bus, as we fight for equality.

yes, the old ghastly argument that boils down to “it’s their fault for existing”. And its variants, “go back to Africa/the jungle/Ireland etc”, “if they don’t like it here they should go back to their own country” and “why should they get special treatment just because they complain?”.

Multi-cultural, as long as the multis try to be Scottish/British (with the implicit and exclusive single permissible definition of Scottish/British).

There is a huge difference between inclusion and integration.

  21. thommybhoyd,

but it just seems to be an issue in this country, and another small part of the british isles across the water, why isnt it an issue in england which have many a catholic school?

as was also said earlier, there is very little mentioned about the endless number of orange walks that take place from march til september every year in this country, an organisation by it’s own rules bar you from attending a catholic mass, let alone being a catholic.

and we have several other cultures in our country that make us what we are, why should we supress it all for the sake of the bigots?

  22. BRTH, ‘with a song and a smile’…… that kind of sums up how I feel about being a fan of this truly special club. A song, a smile, a scarf, a memory, a gathering pre and post match, with love, humour and respect! All taught free of charge at my local Catholic school! Hail hail, sTICks x

  23. TET,

totally understandable,i just cant imagine us not scoring more than them,
