SCVO’s messy rant about Boruc, “our” Weiss and Catholic schools

1752

My attention was drawn to the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) blog yesterday, also covered by Joe O’Rourke on the Association site.  SCVO Director of Pubic Affairs, John Downie, writes about the “proposed bill on sectarianism” but seems to get muddled in his role as a director of SCVO and using SCVO resources to speak as a Rangers fan; in this instance blaming Catholic schools for sectarianism.  How ironic.

Downie writes:

“We’ve previously seen Rangers fans outraged by Celtic goalie Artur Boric crossing himself during games but less bothered – obviously – by about our own players (like Vladimir Weiss last season) doing the same thing.”

“Our own players”!  Is SCVO some closed shop where they talk about Artur Boruc as a “Celtic goalie” and Vladimi Weiss as one of our “own”?

So far, so disturbing, but Downie then uses the article to ride to the rescue with:

“The solution:

Personally, as someone who grew up in the East End of Glasgow and lives in the west of Scotland, I agree with some of what Conservative MSP John Lamont says.  In my opinion one key causes of sectarianism is Scotland continuing to have separate denominational and non-denominational schools.”

So, if only we didn’t have Catholic schools, players like Artur Boruc and “our” Vladimir Weiss would be able to cross themselves free of harassment.  Bizarrely, Downie’s article is subtitled “treating the symptoms not the causes”.  I don’t think he was trying to suggest it’s best to treat the symptoms.

The cause of intolerance is not differences in ethnic, religious or sexuality, it is ignorant bigots.  It is ludicrous to suggest tackling intolerance by assimilating people into some mono-culture.  It’s downright dangerous to blame a minority for intolerance of, and by, them, a sentiment that will only fan the flames of hatred.

The European Examiner reports that various politicians have called for Mr Downie’s removal but SCVO chief exec, Martin Sime, apparently sees nothing wrong in SCVO running a blog discussing one of “our” Rangers players and the “Celtic goalie”, while simultaneously blaming educationally successful faith schools for sectarianism.  SCVO has offered a metaphorical No Surrender to resignation calls.

A brief comment for those who don’t live in Scotland….  Attitudes like this once prevailed but are harder to find these days.  We are a modern, progressive, society, for the most part.

can’t agree davythelotion. reason being that they are as obsessed about their club as we are about ours. And, there are also tens of thousands of them. There may well be 2 or 3 rangers teams which spring from the ashes as the money men try to get ahead of the game. but the hun are going nowhere. The will regroup, reform and eventually get a place in the SPL.

If there is a bet worth having, the bet would be that newco rangers in some form will exist in 5-10 years time.

If the same happened to us in 94. We would have reformed. There is no doubt about that. I don’t know anyone who would have changed their alliegances.

I suppose this raises the question about whether you can switch your team.

But once the hun re-emerge it doesn’t matter what they are called, where they play or what history they claim. We will know them for what they are. Huns.

I have to slightly disagree with you re MulGrew….

I watched him a lot at Aberdeen and he was as good for them as he has been for us. I honestly think the big fella has been badly over looked for some reason. I was all for him coming back to Celtic as he is unbelievably versatile. I think he can play maybe 5 positions well. He is obviously left footed, great striker of the ball both in play and from dead ball situations. He’s not improved as much as people say… He’s been that good for a few years now…

Saturday’s Records front page, Whyte’s original Friday court bill has now risen to £93,000

Surely we need to look behind the screens and see what is happenning.

This is without doubt just a get Whyte out campaign by the DR. It is not designed to do anything to the club, except save it.

The DR are still peddling crap fed to them, or at least peddling crap that they’ve been told is ok to print.

Can’t we all smell the odious Murray influence in this.

The whole campaign stinks, and we are too busy celebrating their demise to really see that clearly.

DR sales have gone up, and they have allied themselves to the ancien regime.

Murray and the old board are so far excluded from any vitriol/calumny/adverse media coverage. They had their hands in the EBT trough, plus fat salaries, plus bonuses etc. On their watch, their club annually spent more than they earned, and they sold off parts of the club in a vain attempt to pretend they were a success. They put the club where it is, Whyte just walked into the crosshairs at the last moment. Where are the articles of exposure and finger pointing that MBB is enduring? They are the ones who should also be barred from being company directors, but because they portray themselves as victims, they seem to be teflon coated.

This is all part of their rehabilitation into Scottish football. Whyte is history, and we need to look beyond that, towards the campaign to overlook their misdemeanours and fraud. They will be held up as the custodians that Scottish football can trust. We have already had the great white hope of the Henry McLeish inspired SFA, Stewart Regan actually say on twitter that Scottish Footbal needs Rangers and Celtic. Publicly, on social network! He is telling us what gthey will do.

    For this to happen,

    1. They will have to have the big tax bill set aside or have it paid by the very people (the taxpayers like US) who are demanding that they pay up.

    2. The SFA/SPL cabals will have to conduct some secret deals in dark rooms and allow them into the game at a fairly high level “to save Scottish football”.

    3. The clubs will have to be persuaded to accept the devil’s deal or go under themselves.

    4. Sky will threaten to pull out of the TV deal, since the terms have been materially altered by the SPL, voiding the contractual arrangements.

    5. The media increase their lobby against the demise of RFC – a campaign has already started…

Murray’s troops will return in some guise or another, once the chancer that is Whyte has been deposed by the frenzied coverage against HIM that is being coached by the DR and other complicit MSM poodles.

Victims and winners are being promoted by the DR every day.

On the field we need the captains, in the dugout we need captains and in the boardroom we need captains.

Let’s just nail their hides to the wall, on the field and off the field.

But be ready for their campaign of re-instatement to gather momentum.

I’d prefer the fat lady takes her time. With a prolonged tax case, Why/itey in charge, and SPHell, the huns are going nowhere.

We bounced back and won the double in 88 but the writing was on the wall and Souness had changed Scottish football. Ceaser came back, we signed Chris Morris, Macca, and a couple more who escape my memory (who used to shout at Rogan! McCarthy it was)…. and we won it back – and the cup too. The following year we were knocked on our arses with the 5-1 result. That was a result that resonated through our darkest days. We were favourites, we went ahead in the first minute or so and were duly hammered.

We bloodied their nose by winning the cup and denting their treble hope but we were on the ropes. They knew and so did we but we continued to hope. Martin Hayes, Cascarino, Slater,…, Biggins, Muggleton.. The last 2 sound like Lord of the Rings characters but in the lead up to the 89 cup final we “signed” “him who shall not be named”. The boost may have been enough to see us over the line that sunny day at hampden when we all got sunburned.

But we were down and almost out. we trundled along. Pat McInlay put us out of Europe in the last minute of the season, seats in the jungle.

What I’m trying to say is that we had years of “grimnes”. I don’t want a quick death for the hun with a pheonix club rising within months.

Let us impose our advantage upon them, and let’s make it last.

What is not to love about Charlie – 6ft 3 sweet left foot can take devastating corners and free kicks, can play left back, centre back and left midfield. Like you, I want him to succeed. I have to say though, Kelvin Wilson in beside him seems to help out with his occassional dozy moments. He’s a big lad Charlie and often doesn’t move his body very quickly. Kelvin’s pace is useful in this regard.

I know, and when I read it all like that – it still hurts.

I fear that they will wriggle off the hook, play every stinking card they can to survive enough to hold onto the core of the club they are and have been for nearly 100 years.

I am pretty certain by exposing the old board and Muuray to the type of scrutiny they deserve, that we are actually giving MBB more time in the job, to bring to the edge of the disaster they deserve. The MSM did nothing while Phil Mac and RTC did all the groundwork. When the MBB regime had screwed Sally over during the window etc, they decided that enough was enough and that Whyte had to be deposed. Ring Ring…hello is that the Daily Record?

We, as Celtic fans, are witnessing another example of the discrimination that we haave endured for years. They are being fawned over by the media, while the SFA are curiously quiet. I read BRTH’s long post earlier tonight and, among other things, he alludes to the same thing.
