SCVO’s messy rant about Boruc, “our” Weiss and Catholic schools

1752

My attention was drawn to the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) blog yesterday, also covered by Joe O’Rourke on the Association site.  SCVO Director of Pubic Affairs, John Downie, writes about the “proposed bill on sectarianism” but seems to get muddled in his role as a director of SCVO and using SCVO resources to speak as a Rangers fan; in this instance blaming Catholic schools for sectarianism.  How ironic.

Downie writes:

“We’ve previously seen Rangers fans outraged by Celtic goalie Artur Boric crossing himself during games but less bothered – obviously – by about our own players (like Vladimir Weiss last season) doing the same thing.”

“Our own players”!  Is SCVO some closed shop where they talk about Artur Boruc as a “Celtic goalie” and Vladimi Weiss as one of our “own”?

So far, so disturbing, but Downie then uses the article to ride to the rescue with:

“The solution:

Personally, as someone who grew up in the East End of Glasgow and lives in the west of Scotland, I agree with some of what Conservative MSP John Lamont says.  In my opinion one key causes of sectarianism is Scotland continuing to have separate denominational and non-denominational schools.”

So, if only we didn’t have Catholic schools, players like Artur Boruc and “our” Vladimir Weiss would be able to cross themselves free of harassment.  Bizarrely, Downie’s article is subtitled “treating the symptoms not the causes”.  I don’t think he was trying to suggest it’s best to treat the symptoms.

The cause of intolerance is not differences in ethnic, religious or sexuality, it is ignorant bigots.  It is ludicrous to suggest tackling intolerance by assimilating people into some mono-culture.  It’s downright dangerous to blame a minority for intolerance of, and by, them, a sentiment that will only fan the flames of hatred.

The European Examiner reports that various politicians have called for Mr Downie’s removal but SCVO chief exec, Martin Sime, apparently sees nothing wrong in SCVO running a blog discussing one of “our” Rangers players and the “Celtic goalie”, while simultaneously blaming educationally successful faith schools for sectarianism.  SCVO has offered a metaphorical No Surrender to resignation calls.

A brief comment for those who don’t live in Scotland….  Attitudes like this once prevailed but are harder to find these days.  We are a modern, progressive, society, for the most part.

    Hail hail.

    Well said.

  3. If Charlie Mulgrew had an extra yard of pace he would be worth a right few million. It is extraordinary how much he has progressed, and to watch the sheer joy on his face when he plays is to see how much Celtic means to him. I can’t wait for tomorrow’s game. If the MIBs behave themselves Celtic should win, but they’ll have to break down a 14 man defence.

  4. I don’t want the hun to die.

Pure and simple, clear as day…

Now don’t get too upset because I actually do want them to die, but just not yet.

We must start singing Why/ite must stay. We can even hope for a HMRC defeat in the tribunal because, as soon as such a decision is made, HMRC will appeal and the hun will be stuck exactly where they are now. No one will want to sell them anything unless payment is up front is confirmed and they will continue running the club on their TicketUs credit card.

Whatever happens, in 5 or 10 years time there will be a club called rangers playing in Glasgow. This club will probably be a new legal entity but, strangely enough, it will claim trophies going back over 100 years – long before its inception. Anyone who doesn’t think this will happen is deluded. The hun are not going to go and support Killie, Falkirk, Airdrie (maybe in the short term)…. They will be born again and the tens of thousands of fans will get behind them when this happens. Whether they play at Hampden or Ibrox is something to be argued later. But, between now and the newco, lets give Why/ity our full support. Lets get behind him. He’d doing a grand job but if it takes another 3, 4 or 5 years for them to die, then so be it. Why hurry.

    Craig Why/ite, your doing grand.

Great track, and the best version of it, but… “a band from the West of Scotland” – that’s a bit of a stretch. Not even the shitey STV Best Scottish album programme tried to claim Talking Heads [quarter Scottish and formed in New York] as Scottish (they did claim Snow Patrol [mostly Irish but formed in Dundee] and KLF [half Scottish and formed in Liverpool]).

Off to my kip now but would you be able to post up the actual games for tomorrow’s predictor and I’ll get it in the morning?

    Cheers mate.

  9. I understand the hun are claiming that our own club is only 18 years old. Well, companies do evolve and change their ownership, strucure and name. At no point did we cease trading. At no point did we actually stop paying our bills.

The hun, if liquidated, will cease to be. Trading will cease. The company will be wound up and be no more. That is not a transformation, like we have had – probably more than once in 124 years – that is death.

  10. HT,

    no probs.

my guess is that even if there is a NEWCO or another shower or whatever, a lot of ranjurz fans will take the oppurtunity to break the habit. They’ve been waiting for years to throw off the legacy that has bound them, they are’nt like any other supporter, they’ve followed their club because they’ve felt they had to, there’s no joy, no optimism, no hope. It’s all been about the right to succeed and the obligation on everyone else to stand aside.

If you’re only based on hate and bigotry then you can’t see beyond your own right. Celtic aren’t defined by any other football club, lots of clubs in Scotland aren’t defined by what they aren’t, but ranjurz are, that’s why they’ll disappear after administration/liquidation.

You dropped a track last Summer that was critically acclaimed on CQN.

Any chance of getting that youtube back on tonight, my pea brain memory is not letting me recall it.

  14. Good Morning All,

For those not watching the BBC4 Programme on our ‘in-house’ band Depeche Mode, my first song of the evening is for you. Me and Mrs sTICks were getting quite 80’s nostalgic watching it – so much so we sneaked out to the garden for a quick snog behind the shed. However things went down hill when my hands started to wander towards ‘the side o the the ti*!’ :o) Oh well – things haven’t changed in over 20 years!

    Glad someone noticed!

Arrogance, complacency, lack of forward thinking, self-centredness, imperviousness. At the root of the failure of all occupiers – the belief that they are so superior that the natives cannot possibly usurp them, and when the natives do, they are insufficiently prepared or aware or educated to cope. That;s the short version anyway. Does it fit this scenario we enjoy today. I think yes. Pass the ice-cream.

Apologies, I was wrong to assume that all were West of Scotland. I just knew that David Byrne was from my neck of the woods.
