SCVO’s messy rant about Boruc, “our” Weiss and Catholic schools

1752

My attention was drawn to the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) blog yesterday, also covered by Joe O’Rourke on the Association site.  SCVO Director of Pubic Affairs, John Downie, writes about the “proposed bill on sectarianism” but seems to get muddled in his role as a director of SCVO and using SCVO resources to speak as a Rangers fan; in this instance blaming Catholic schools for sectarianism.  How ironic.

Downie writes:

“We’ve previously seen Rangers fans outraged by Celtic goalie Artur Boric crossing himself during games but less bothered – obviously – by about our own players (like Vladimir Weiss last season) doing the same thing.”

“Our own players”!  Is SCVO some closed shop where they talk about Artur Boruc as a “Celtic goalie” and Vladimi Weiss as one of our “own”?

So far, so disturbing, but Downie then uses the article to ride to the rescue with:

“The solution:

Personally, as someone who grew up in the East End of Glasgow and lives in the west of Scotland, I agree with some of what Conservative MSP John Lamont says.  In my opinion one key causes of sectarianism is Scotland continuing to have separate denominational and non-denominational schools.”

So, if only we didn’t have Catholic schools, players like Artur Boruc and “our” Vladimir Weiss would be able to cross themselves free of harassment.  Bizarrely, Downie’s article is subtitled “treating the symptoms not the causes”.  I don’t think he was trying to suggest it’s best to treat the symptoms.

The cause of intolerance is not differences in ethnic, religious or sexuality, it is ignorant bigots.  It is ludicrous to suggest tackling intolerance by assimilating people into some mono-culture.  It’s downright dangerous to blame a minority for intolerance of, and by, them, a sentiment that will only fan the flames of hatred.

The European Examiner reports that various politicians have called for Mr Downie’s removal but SCVO chief exec, Martin Sime, apparently sees nothing wrong in SCVO running a blog discussing one of “our” Rangers players and the “Celtic goalie”, while simultaneously blaming educationally successful faith schools for sectarianism.  SCVO has offered a metaphorical No Surrender to resignation calls.

A brief comment for those who don’t live in Scotland….  Attitudes like this once prevailed but are harder to find these days.  We are a modern, progressive, society, for the most part.

  1. before I head off to bed, have a read at this. Posted on FF:

I dont really have any sympathy for the refs any more, we spend too much time making excuses for them, yes its down to fear and being terrified everyone is scared of something but they know exactly what they are doing. They want Celtic to be successful as it makes their life so much easier. Last year these guys could easily have handed Celtic the 3 prizes. Murray gave them the scottish cup with the most biased old firm performance ever and helped them out in the final v Motherwell, Thomson done everything possible to hand them the other cup, and the same ref gave them an outrageous penalty in what could have been a league decider at ibrox. They could have handed Lennon the lot they certainly tried too.

The yellow and red cards are clear examples of cheating and thats been going on in scottish football for at least 5 or 6 years now. We pick them up easily Celtic can play a very physical game but the ref is almost always lenient Its too obvious everyone can see it even ex celtic player and coach Murdo McLeod speaks about it on sportsound.

I want to know what ally mccoist and people are Rangers are going to do about it. We have tried the nice guy act, the silence, saying nothing because someone in the media will be offended and its taken us to where we are today. Bent refereeing every week.

Refs are obviously looking at Rangers and thinking, well if your not going to say anything and force the media to report on it then we aint going change.

Can you imagine how these guys like craig thomson and calum murray and others are going to behave if Celtic were to lose form ? we would probably see a repeat of the shameful end to walter smiths 1st season back when about 8 celtic games in a row were fixed.

Are we going to allow these neanderthals to keep Scotland down forever?

I grew up loving watching Scotland facing Zico etc.

The Grassroots is where proper change for the populace will happen.

The Green Brigade are educated and leading the way in SUPPORT of any team in World football.

CelticQuickNews despite having a lean time trophies wise for their favourite club has probably raised more money for charity than when it had its Generation of D.

The concentration on helping others before anything else will mean a lot of success in the future.

Now why are huns so worried about tax payers money being used for catholic schools?

If they paid any taxes maybe I’d listen!

  4. “We, as Celtic fans, are witnessing another example of the discrimination that we haave endured for years. They are being fawned over by the media, while the SFA are curiously quiet. I read BRTH’s long post earlier tonight and, among other things, he alludes to the same thing.

Captains on the field, in the dugout and in the boardroom.

And captains in the stands. We, the support, at and not at the games, need to be aware what is happening, and act in accordance. As simple as explaining why we will have a party when they die.

BECAUSE THEY ARE CHEATING AND THEY ARE BIGOTED.

And the disgrace to Scotland is that the huns downfall will be because they have been found out to be tax cheats, not because they were found out to be bigots and racists. Just like Al Capone.

    * Whatever part of my club depends on Rangers is a part I am willing to lose.

    * Scottish football has only been competitive in the last ten seasons because Rangers have cheated.

I thought he looked well short of the level of the other guys in the team (they were all super pumped up tho hehe). Good build for a striker though and should be a good one in 3 or 4 weeks IMO.

  6. Clink,

Re Desmond Kane’s article, if only, if only more in the mainstream press could write and say it as it is! Probably the biggest frustration I have as a Celtic fan. There fan’s activities, behaviour, attitudes, etc etc, the activities of their club – from their signing to their present day financial policies…. Simply the – lowest of the low!!!

As for our Desmond’s reference to our ‘own unsavoury band’ I can only assume he refers to our fans who continue to sing songs that our club has asked us repeatedly to stop singing?

I am so proud to be a Celtic fan and will enjoy much Jelly and Ice cream in the weeks and months ahead as more information and situations unfold!

We both know that the midfield is ready for the CL next season.

Hoops over the last few games would be a stick on for a striker against Europes best.

Tony Stokes is vital for Celtic domestically (IMO) and he can still improve further.

Young lads both of them and the more exposure to experienced operators the better.

Brozek will not really make a lot of impact IMO unless he really plays at the top of his level…. ;)

If he does then our young Strikers will learn a lot.

    Wheatley died in `77.

I would guess that he would be horrified to see how his words are accompanied today by current

day visuals about events after his death.

The visual message is usually stronger than the verbal.

This basically underlines the real message he was trying to convey.
