SCVO’s messy rant about Boruc, “our” Weiss and Catholic schools

1752

My attention was drawn to the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) blog yesterday, also covered by Joe O’Rourke on the Association site.  SCVO Director of Pubic Affairs, John Downie, writes about the “proposed bill on sectarianism” but seems to get muddled in his role as a director of SCVO and using SCVO resources to speak as a Rangers fan; in this instance blaming Catholic schools for sectarianism.  How ironic.

Downie writes:

“We’ve previously seen Rangers fans outraged by Celtic goalie Artur Boric crossing himself during games but less bothered – obviously – by about our own players (like Vladimir Weiss last season) doing the same thing.”

“Our own players”!  Is SCVO some closed shop where they talk about Artur Boruc as a “Celtic goalie” and Vladimi Weiss as one of our “own”?

So far, so disturbing, but Downie then uses the article to ride to the rescue with:

“The solution:

Personally, as someone who grew up in the East End of Glasgow and lives in the west of Scotland, I agree with some of what Conservative MSP John Lamont says.  In my opinion one key causes of sectarianism is Scotland continuing to have separate denominational and non-denominational schools.”

So, if only we didn’t have Catholic schools, players like Artur Boruc and “our” Vladimir Weiss would be able to cross themselves free of harassment.  Bizarrely, Downie’s article is subtitled “treating the symptoms not the causes”.  I don’t think he was trying to suggest it’s best to treat the symptoms.

The cause of intolerance is not differences in ethnic, religious or sexuality, it is ignorant bigots.  It is ludicrous to suggest tackling intolerance by assimilating people into some mono-culture.  It’s downright dangerous to blame a minority for intolerance of, and by, them, a sentiment that will only fan the flames of hatred.

The European Examiner reports that various politicians have called for Mr Downie’s removal but SCVO chief exec, Martin Sime, apparently sees nothing wrong in SCVO running a blog discussing one of “our” Rangers players and the “Celtic goalie”, while simultaneously blaming educationally successful faith schools for sectarianism.  SCVO has offered a metaphorical No Surrender to resignation calls.

A brief comment for those who don’t live in Scotland….  Attitudes like this once prevailed but are harder to find these days.  We are a modern, progressive, society, for the most part.

  1. Sixteen roads to Golgotha on

Wonders why anybody would want to change anything about Molloy Malone’s?

Easily one of the best pubs on this planet.

  2. Today’s game will almost cetainly be a totally different affair from Wednesday’s as Butcher and his hammer throwers will set out a double wall of defence to make it a war of attrition. Their game plan will be to frustrate the team and the crowd and it’ll be a day for both to be patient.

On Wednesday the midfield’s passing and movement was as fluid as I’ve seen it and, again, it’d be nice to see Victor play the same role where he ventured forward of the ball more often than previously seen.

Last Saturday I posted this could be a pivotal week and the performances, so far, have been quality, today is probably the toughest because as I say ICT will simply park the bus. Another win today to celebrate Lenny’s 100th game would cap a week that’ll be remembered.

  3. Good morning Celts, looking forward to a day in paradise with the bhoys in green, and then doon the gallowgate with the C’mon you Bhoys in Green :>)

Score today? I’ll be happy with a one goal victory and 3 points, although I think it’ll be 5-0 oh happy days!

I understand.Thought you meant that it had been changed recently.

It’s one of those pubs that a person could spend all day in,without a care or a worry in the world.

    morning buddy.

Yep 1-0 does the job, but like you, I want a heavier thumping administered.

Are our expectations becoming unrealistic? Perhaps, but our expectations are a result of this young, hungry and conistent progressive team showing they have no equal in Scotland at present. The 4 point gap needs to be maintained or extended, and I am convinced that as long as we keep winning, that will happen due to the only competiton being the exact opposite in the qualities I mentioned.

They are old, lacking in appetite for the game, and inconsistent.

Mon the hoops – increase the levels of fear they are experiencing by demolishing the highlanders.

  7. “Neil Lennon must go if Celtic don’t win the league this year!”

That seems to be the opinion of most people who are allergic to jelly and ice-cream but I hope it’s not the view of most Celtic fans.

If it is your view then I’d ask you to think again, think what Neil has done in the last couple of years.  Despite not having 7 years intensive baby-sitting he’s proved thats he’s a leader who can take all the crap they can throw at him and one who learns quickly from his mistakes.

Even in what could be classed a bad year, he won the Scottish Cup, final of the League Cup and was very close to winning the league. He definitely made mistakes but he wasn’t helped by a team who, let’s be honest, bottled it.

This season he’s assembled a young squad of players who most people agree is of genuine quality, he’s put us in a great position to win a treble, and he’s showed just as much as last year that he can handle the press and all the pressures a Celtic manager is subjected to.

Now obviously if we somehow manage to lose the league then it’s going to be a nightmare of huge proportions, but I can think of another nightmare – sacking a manager with enormous potential, breaking up a good squad and bringing in another manager who may or may not be good for Celtic.

I’m certain we’ve got a real gem on our hands, don’t let the non-dessert eaters tell you anything else. Happy 100th game Neil!

  8. Just getting in from a night out in Delray Beach, Florida. Worse for wear.

The Hu*s are down the pan, and we will win today- so chill.

  9. Team today should feature Forrest, oh wait, back to Commons? Oh no, maybe Paddy needs a wee run, but what about Ki? Vic and broony MUST start, awe naw, I’ve forgot Joe? Is Ibraham ready yet?

Maaaaaaannnn we have so much talent. We are LOADED :-)))))

  11. Morning All,

Decisions decisions on the team for today. Like many I think Neil will go with young Anthony up top with Hoops but that means dropping Sammi or James Forrest or if you go with all four you then have to drop one of Brown, Ledley or Wanyama from the midfield!! Who’d be a manager!!

Personally I would play the same 11 as Wednesday if possible but if Rogne is out I would move Chas in one and get Emilio some game time. Whatever Neil decides will do for me though and any win will be a good win.

Would be nice to see Dunfermline get their first home win of the season before we kick off mind!!

Agree. I was having my doubts at 15pts behind but never called for his head… Not because I thought Lenny was the new Mesiah but because I felt loyalty to the man who answered our call in our hour of greatest need. Lenny would not have been my choice, he was a desperation signing , seen as the only viable candidate and probably a bridge to an increasingly alienated fan base. I still maintain as a rule Celtic is not a first managerial job. Lenny has proved the exception to that rule.

We’ve been extremely fortunate to get him at this time. He has galvanised the club in a very powerful way. The Board deserve no credit for this but they will doubtless take it.

    Lenny is the Mhan!

  13. Morning all.

Looking forward to today’s game after the scintillating performance on Wednesday night, a three pm kick of on a Saturday!

I’d also like to wish a very warm welcome to Terry Butcher and especially Greg Tansey, hope you both appreciate the feeling of the home support!

I worked in there for a few years when I was younger. It was a great pub then, bands on every night, fantastic atmosphere and very, very rarely any bother. Standing room only at weekend and 5 deep at the bar.

Only drank there very occasionally…but now you mention it….was there one night, midweek, when the doors had to be locked and none of us could leave…..because the huns were rampaging up Hope St for whatever reason they had that night. Part of me found it a tad entertaining, being able to sit ringside with a pint and watch them make muppets of themselves. It really was night of the living dead.

  16. If cousin,s cannot play for them today because he was not registered in time, does that mean he has to serve his one game suspension next week…….just a thought

  17. FFM

That happened a few times, likewise when there was an Orange walk. They’d all be stoatin up Hope St in the rain while the punters were cosy indoors with a pint telling the tourists what the carry on outside was really all about.

  18. Cults Bhoy

“Lenny has proved the exception to that rule.”

Aye like Guardiola at Barca and Capello whose first managerial job was Milan. There are many exceptions to this non-rule.

In principle, I agree that I would prefer, on balance, an experienced manager but Celtic were between a rock and a hard place, after buying and backing an experienced manager in Tony Mowbray. They did a sensible thing in giving Lenny a “trial” period after TM went. Lenny passed his trial with flying colours, apart from Ross County, otherwise the so-called cheap option would not and could not ave been reached for.

There was a strong and reasoned opinion against Lenny being appointed but they were definitely a minority view, albeit a sizeable one. If we had appointed an experienced manager like Alan Pardew or a relative rookie like Brendan Rodgers, there would have been uproar, yet both have had dramatic success since their appointments.

Appointing a manager is still more of an Art than a Science.

  19. Cults

BTW, If we follow that precept that the board “deserve no credit” when they get it right or stumble on the right course of action, is it not a bit hypocritical to give them the blame when it goes wrong?

I have always felt that Lenny and the players lost the league last year, unfortunately, after a great effort and I believe it will be Lenny and the players who will win it this year. There will be no cheering of Board Members names from this poster but I will react if I see unjustifiable blame being attached to the wrong areas.

  20. As administration approaches at Mordor, we need to be alert to exactly what is going on with Murray and Whyte and the SFA.

I am incredibly suspicious that Murray has reappeared on the scene and is suddenly taking a close interest in them again…

I thought that about Minty…and still do…howevva, I heard that he is just glad to be out of it and is not nearly as clever as wee give him credit for. The signs to me though is that he is setting up his return. On white horse numero duh.

  22. Top of the morning to you all from a grey, dry, and calm Fife.

If the weather at the match today is like this it will be perfect for a good game, with, hopefully a big win against Butcher’s boys. We are due one and the score flattered us the last time they visited.

Enjoying my television just now and I am warming to Mr. Whyte with every attack by his own kind.

The latest querying of his finances from that past-master of smoke and mirrors financial wizardry Sir David Murray must rate as hypocrisy on a breathtaking scale.

Where did he get the money from indeed David?

  23. The Honest Mistake loves being first on

    Italiabhoy.

Seems to me that busted flush Minty is playing the blame game. Realizing that whyte might make it through to the ftt results, he is trying to force whyte’s hand before then. Whyte makes it to the ftt results, minty has to say goodbye to Scotland.

Morning all… On the footi run with some junior ABs..

IF they sign cousin , it’s no more than an attempt to recreate the chaos Diouf caused.. A 35yo thug, STILL suspended, sums them up..

We focus on our game and they can attempt all the dirty tricks.. IF they get Cousin, it’s no more than an irritant.. We should learn from their Diouf dirty tricks of last yr..

    We ve no fears..

Cannot wait for our trip to paradise today.. Butcher like Jefferies , always one of the Rankers you love to put in their place..

  25. Can anybody enlighten me, what was cousins strike rate the last time he was with the currants?

I do not think it was particularly terrific?

  26. ItaliaBhoy at 08:42

    You are 100% right.

Personally, I am deeply suspicious about the silence from the SFA throughout this on-going saga.

    Perhaps they find it “tiresome”?

I suspect colusion throughout the Murray years.

In fact, before and beyond the Murray years…

There is a stench of corruption that is becoming overpowering.

Let’s hope the truth will finally come out in the coming weeks and months.

  27. Morning CQN looking forward to the game , after 2 good away wins we can welcome the bhoys home. Same team as midweek , Dan for Thomas if he is unfit.

It,s Neils 100th game as manager so hoping for a big win.

Also loving the panto over the city hope the tax case judgement is delayed for a few months as they keep on providing laugh after laugh with their blame game. It Eisner me that spent all the money.

RANGERS goalkeeper Grant Adam appeared in court today accused of a sectarian breach of the peace.

The 20-year-old is alleged to have conducted himselfin a disorderly manner by swearing, singing and chanting sectarianslogans in Ingram Street, Glasgow in the early hours of November 6.

The Rangers footballer, who denies the charge, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Dressed in a black suit and white shirt, the footballer spoke only to confirm his name.

The case, due to go to trial today, was adjourned following legal discussions between the Crown and the defence.

Adam, who is on loan to Lanarkshire side Airdrie United, was released on bail and will now be tried in May.

He has been a member of the Old Firm club since leaving school.
