Season pivots. Gambling referees

175

As the second half progressed at Pittodrie, our season hung by a thread.  Aberdeen looked the more likely, Celtic were not making chances, it was difficult to see where a win was coming from.  A week earlier, we closed out the game against Dundee United better, without reward, but the winner arrived yesterday, courtesy of Tom Rogic, Adam Montgomery and the always-dangerous, Jota.

Kyogo’s return to league duty brought a reward within 11 minutes.  The Japanese icon steered a David Turnbull cross off his chest into the net.  It was an unconventional finish that should have set Celtic on course for a comfortable victory against an Aberdeen team that struggled to find a pass.

The home side came out a different team at halftime and took advantage of a perennial Celtic weakness to score from a corner kick.  Scott Brown almost doubled the damage from a subsequent corner, forcing an instinctive save from Joe Hart.

There is a points gap that does not really matter how much you will improve, you are going to struggle to pull off a recovery.  We have seen Celtic recover from more than 9 points behind much later than this in the season, but those were exceptional times.  We don’t want to go there again.

Teams that win leagues find ways to win games, even when they are struggling.  Celtic needed to do this yesterday.  When Jota got on the end of that cross, the season pivoted.

You can bet on which team will be awarded more fouls in some foreign betting markets.  The probity of our match officials and their resistance to the debt spiral gambling can bring should be monitored. Unfortunately, it is not.

  1. Marspapa,

Been hoping to catch you from the other day.

So, how do you know mum and dad? Do you live in the Grove? A St Mary’s man? A St Mary’s woman? 🤷🏽‍♂️ 😅

  2. Superbru Predictor Update

Just before the international Break, we have a new leader, Call Me Gerry, who scored 14 points this weekend beating BMCUWP into 2nd place with 11, Wee McCaff with 10, and ATOB with 9.5.

This has taken Call Me Gerry into overall top place with 55 points ahead of long time leader Hopeful Hoops with Bhoy from the Villa, Bateen Bhoy and 18 yard Man occupying the top 5 slots.

Down in the relegation territory, Leggy is on the bottom with 29 points just behind Park Road 67 and Wee BGFC, though our poorest performer this week was Majestic Hartson with 1 point.

No new picks are required until Sat. 16th October at 3 pm and I should have announced the final prize money by then as we will be making an interim small pay out to those who are our top 3 after the final December fixtures on the 29th December, with final payouts to come at the league end fixtures.

I need a view from the participants on the matter of whether to keep the playing name of our recently departed friend, Garry Postecoglou on the Board. As he is only getting default picks, he is sliding down the Board (currently in 4th bottom place) and will inevitably slide to the bottom. I am asking for views on whether to keep his name on the board to honour him or whether to might be seen as bad taste. I have checked and there is no way that anyone can take over his predictions so it is either remove his name or keep him there in last place.

Any views welcome as I don’t want to act unilaterally on this matter.

Just watched an episode of Monty Python’s Flying Circus …

… disguised as Newsnight’s coverage of the Conservative Party Conference.

A series of loons with blue rosettes lining up to tell us that the fuel crisis and HGV driver shortage are both are actually a good thing …

….. the PM’s father, Monsieur Stanley Johnson (complete with newly acquired French passport) telling us Britain’s future is bright.

    Please support if possible :::::

The CQN/Sentinelcelts community, and the many friends of Garry Duncan aka Delaneys Dunky, would like to commemorate Garry’s life and friendship as well pay respect to his recent untimely passing.

We have had many great suggestions from you on how we best commerate Garry’s life, including flowers, a memorial brick, donation to Mary’s meals and financial support for the family etc.

Garry’s family, like so many others in our world today, is not a rich family and find their wealth is through the happiness of the family, so to have the burden of not only laying Garry to rest, but also the cost that goes with it is horrific .

Having spoken with Garry’s son Ryan, we feel it appropriate to pass any monies raised direct to the family to let them decide the best way to use it.

Anyone who wants to support the family in leaving a long lasting commemoration in honour of Garry can do so through making a donation via bank transfer to –

Please note – tick business account

:You can also make a donation via paypal to walkwithshay@yahoo.com

Donations will close on Friday 8th October

Thank you in advance for supporting Garry and his family at this very difficult time.

    🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Huge Thanks to CRC for supporting, with the use of the Walk with Shay Legacy Fund/account, ensuring support can get there quickly

  5. Exiled Tim has rightly posted for years about to sort Scottish football sort out the refs first. The performances of the match officials over the last weekend sum up how bad Scottish match officials are. .

I’m going to be at my pernickety worst here ,there was a post earlier saying Kuznetzov done Tommy when we played Dynamo Kiev in the European Cup. The guilty party was the Kiev number 9 , Zavarov who later played for the despicable Rubentus . It was a really nasty one which put Tommy out for the remainder of the season. Tommy was having a great game against Dynamo when that wee keich decided to put him out the game.

    Bedtime.

    Night all.

  7. Good morning Celtic fans all over the globe from a dry but overcast Garngad

Just listened to a couple of tunes by Glzsgiw band the Wakes, never really listened before but was pleasantly surprised.

I just hop we get no more injuries during international break and allow us to go on a run.

    D :)

  8. Injuries have been the bane of our Celtic lives last season and this could be doing with a break on these and hopefully put a run together now that we’ve quashed the away monkey on our backs. Keeping everything crossed during the international break, por cierto

  9. JVR

Thanks for the correction on who did Tommy Burns in that game. Funny how pre-internet, a misconception becomes fact in your head years later! I was at the game and close to it but I think the Record had a still photo of the point of impact which made me wince.

  10. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Was in the front of the jungle that night Burns got taken out.

    Remember it vividly.

Not just the tackle – but the confab among their players minutes beforehand, when Zavarov was given his instructions.

Wonder what the sanctions would be these days for such a premeditated, group organised assault?

  11. What have I learned from the Sheep game …

FW is not one of Scotland’s better holiday destinations.

The WHW should end at Glenfinnan or Arisaig.

Nearest CFC pub was seemingly in Oban.

    Not good.

Other nuggets — AR needs more coaching support.

He played with a permanent 400m stare that looked straight out of Nam.

AM — he is as raw as sushi / gave their RW far too much room.

NB is now a caricature of his Top 20 terrible performances.

5 good passes with the rest of his play being based on terrible anger management.

Any other team in the league would have gotten at least a draw.

The Sheep are in a very poor place — LF has fallen off a cliff / SB was in charity match mode and they are playing babies left / right / central.

I fear that we are over coached at the moment.

Those that can are making a show of playing the AP way.

Those that can’t are scared fartless that they will make a mistake.

    Second half with us pressing.

In the attacking third of the pitch with 8 players involved.

And we continually just pass it 10 yards — tippy tappy style — at a snails pace.

No energy / no directness / no invention / no bravery.

Until it all gets too much and we try impossible passes out wide.

Consequently we are not in a good place.

LA — he is a second striker / inside forward — not a real winger.

Huge talent so he can learn but again he needs more support and coaching.

As ever our set pieces were poor overall — very sloppy with no focus.

No one showing for the ball at a throw in — the Lowland League are better organised.

The only thing worse than our performance was the MIB who really did take it to a new level.

The word must be out that if you fall to the ground with one of our players within 5 yards of you a foul will be given against us — far too often the game was a very poor game of “Best man falls”.

Big game for everybody concerned — lots of history.

The Sheep don’t turn up — on or off the park.

The MIB remove any residual energy / talent / fluidity with their unique interpretation of the rules.

No wonder the SPL can’t sell their product anywhere.

Oh well — at least we won.

  12. The BBC is spreading Gerrard’s narrative on the Hibs red card. The Huns are good at PR. Kris Commons has weighed in to help them.

  13. To say that the Tories are an easy target in Scotland is an understatement. Let’s all laugh at Tories…with a little bit of Monty Ptython anglicisation thrown in. Meanwhile in our real Pie, Chips and Beans country Labour lovelies continue to get a media platform in the Scotsman newspaper from Edinburgh today. In order to keep the working people in their places. Henry McLeish…surprise surprise…panning the 5 clubs in Scotland looking to develop the game. How long before we find out these clubs are racist, mysoginist and homophobic too? Labour may not always be in power but the boys always get their jobs. Remember Labour ruled for over 50 years in Scotland , especially in Glasgow and the West of Scotland but instead of EVER supporting the public they just took the jobs as councillors then MPs, then OBE’s and MBE’s and knighthoods and became Lords, a loooooooong time before Ruth Davidson, who I canny stand either ….or the referee Ross. It is one thing portraying yourself as a moderate but quite another being in reality an extreme careerist and opportunist. Look at what these icharacters do never rely on what they say

I know that since the Seventies Celtic have become more and more Labour supporting, culminating in Lord Reid becoming chairman some years ago. I only hope we are not so attached to them now and are non-party political to represent the wide range of opinions Celtic supporters have. Celtic have the chance to listen to these five clubs or we can stick with our knee- bending friends in Govan.

  14. Coneybhoy, Kuznetzov was the only player many of our fans remember of that Kiev team as he ended up at Ibrox so that could be why a lot of people think it was him who done Tommy. Although I’m sure Sergei Baltacha ex of St Johnstone played for Kiev in that .

Back to basics , Kiev were sticking the boot in a fair bit in that game before Tommy was hit. Tommy had been playing really well so no doubt their conflab was on how to stop him which Zavarov succeeded in doing .

  15. MAJESTIC HARTSON

We stayed in Almada Street in 83., the cottage block on the left just before the lights at the County buildings .
