SFA not caring enough. Morton, ooft.

658

What exactly went wrong at yesterday’s Scottish Cup draw? Plastic balls can break open, that wasn’t the problem. The rule which insists that when a ball breaks open the draw must be started again isn’t the problem either. It’s a perfectly reasonable rule, but the event still can the SFA in a dreadful light.

Imagine for a moment that you had a Cup draw to arrange live on international television. You would surely acquire the materials necessary (8 balls and a bowl), and test their effectiveness (mix the balls, pull them out, open), until you were satisfied the process was robust and not likely to embarrass the organisation.

Appropriate preparations were evidently not followed for the Scottish Cup quarter final draw.

Having got to the stage that the draw went wrong, the TV masses were then treated to the most cringe-worthy pregnant pause, as SFA president, Alan McRae completely failed to communicate, either to the watching TV audience, or to the event broadcaster SKY, why he pulled a ball out of the bowl and instead of announcing the tie, declared the draw invalid.

McRae knew the ball was opened before it was drawn, and that this invalidated the draw, but clearly the glaikit-looking TV presenter had no idea what was going on when McRae halted mid-process, neither did the TV audience. A simple explanation:

“This ball is open. Rules state the draw is invalid. We will need to start again.”

….was surely what any person possessing even remote people-awareness or communication skills would have said?

No explanation was given. We were treated instead to the site of a TV presenter trying in vain to figure out why a cup draw was scratched halfway through.

The role of SFA president requires a degree of communication skills, which Mr McRae was hugely bereft of yesterday.

As for the SFA itself, I went to their official site this morning to check the spelling of McRae’s name, only to find they still list Campbell Ogilvie as president, despite McRae’s appointment 8 months ago.

It beggars belief. They just don’t care enough to get the easy things right.

As for getting Morton at Celtic Park! Ooft.  After Ross County repeating their Hampden trick on us, Morton will fancy the same.

I know many of you have previously supported the fantastic efforts of Bundoran Bhoy. This year he is doing four runs for Solving Kids’ Cancer, in memory of Oscar Knox. His first is the Great Edinburgh (misnomer?) Run in April, the Edinburgh Marathon in May, Glasgow Men’s 10k in June and the Great Scottish Run Half Marathon in October.

He has just launched his 2016 fundraising efforts, so you can nip in here and encourage him along.

The Lawwell-Haters on here would be overjoyed if goes – but….”you never miss your water till the well runs dry” – It will be a bad day for Celtic if/when Peter leaves – methinks Dermot will sell up too and we think we have troubles at the moment – still maybe the ‘Sack The Board’ bed-sheeters (wetters), the Truss and the flame-throwers, will get their champion Jannette Findlay for a short spell, before we go belly-up.

Tommy Boyd last night on shortbread trying his best to justify failure. He was sincere and dogged but ultimately not credible. If the club are going to go on a PR offensive I suggest they get someone else to be honest. Loved TB as a player and respect his views – a proper Celtic gent but ultimately not the stuff required to communicate via the media on behalf of the club.

I suspect he’s great with fans on match day as he is a genuine bloke.

Congratulations Tommy ,you are a great Celtic man , and will prove to be a great ambassador for the world famous Glasgow Celtic.

    Now .

If Ronnie Deila isn’t the problem .

    Then what is?

I believe he is part of the problem.

Whoever is selecting this current crop of players and deciding that they can take Celtic to the champions league , is failing.

    Something needs to change .

The recent great white hope is Ryan Christie.

He fits the CV of our recent signings.

Young , Scottish , within budget, and sadly lightweight.

We are on the road to nowhere , with this standard of signing.

    Something needs to change.

The scouting is failing us miserably.

    Is it John McVey?

    Is it John Park?

    Is Ronnie Deila?

    Whatever it is .

    It isn’t working.

    Change must happen.

We are on the cusp of a disaster.

If the powers that be ,don’t see it,and find a positive solution.

The stands will empty even further.

    Some call for rebellion.

    It has already happened .

Tens of thousands of empty seats prove it.

Thanks for that answer – it’s very enlightening. It confirms a few things…

Incidentally – are you in favour of anarchy? I guess that’s what we’d get without Government and the Law. Or are you proposing an alternative means of appointing civic leaders, judges, etc?

If so what might that be if not university ( which is only 3 or 4 years of 20 years preparation for high office). I’m interested in how you might organise an alternative society.

Do you lean towards a feudal model? This would be consistent with your deference to Celtic Board.. Which ironically includes politicians and university graduates.

Can’t believe what I’m watching in Celtic jerseys just now.

Someone made a point last night that Celtic supporters don’t even have that sense of injustice, underdog, to bind us together. That was accurate, CQN is a microcosm of our fans who find it easier to fight and squabble amongst ourselves than band together to fight a common enemy.

That enemy is at our door; we are split asunder, leaderless.

    It will most probably work.

To try and answer you question – and BTW Im no authority – just an opinion

I try and assume that people are not stupid – in this case PL and DD

I think (hope) they have decided to make a change with RD for two reasons

    a) Financial – Revenue is down due to poor European performances

    b) Entertainment – frankly watching Celtic can be a bit – well boring at the minute

However the man they want to replace RD is wrapped up (possibly with the Euros or another team/league) until the end of the season

So they have to run with RD until the end of the season

Hence the charm offensive from people with connections to the club

And the reason for the charm offensive is simple – if Celtic do not win the league we are in a bit more of a financial mess (and thats not counting the pure embarrassment of not winning the league)

So to give the club the best chance of wining the league there needs to be public backing for RD to maintain a bit of stability and to give us the best chance of winning the league

The alternative is to do what Derby County did this week and Im not sure that would help Celtic

for clarity I have wanted RD out for over a year – wonderful man I would love a pint with him – but our European performances tell me he does not have what we need

I have accepted that RD is here for the rest of the season – I hope and pray we win the league – the SC frankly I don’t really care, nice to win it but for me nothing more important than the league

I respect your right to disagree with posters, but I have severe reservations with the aggressive manner you use to do so.

Tommy Boyd has every right-and,yesterday,the correct platform-to defend Ronny. The point was made that his arguments in Ronny’s favour didn’t hold water.

Me,I’m for keeping him as I am wary of the alternatives. But to dispute another’s point of view takes more than the equivalent of repeatedly shouting ‘Shut it,you!’ at someone whose view of things is not your own.

We all know your thoughts, that we shouldn’t question the club in any way. But denying the right to debate? I seriously doubt that an open blog is the place for such an approach.

You are both of a different view to me which I accept but failure to me is

EUROPE- I don’t have high demands/ expectations in Europe. No delusion of lifting cups but performances under Deila can never be accepted as success, surely?

Recent cup exit to Ross County.

Given we are spending 6+ times nearest rivals we are neck and neck in the league and without a settled starting line up.

Numerous poor signings ( I’d add to that too many signings – hence no clear picture of a starting 11)

Increasing alienation of fans manifest in empty seats and dwindling revenue income.

These are failures in my mind but they are abject failings in the context of a one horse race.

I honestly believed we would be in a league of our own metaphorically when Hunco liquidated.

It doesn’t feel like that to me.

The problem is that Celtic have been a bit boring at times for one reason or another since about 2003. Football as a rule is a bit boring at times. Especially if you’re a supporter of a team expected to win most games.
