Shakhter sounding bolshy on Celtic

1231

I hear the modest noises which Shakhter manager Viktor Kumykov made after their win over Celtic last week have been replaced by more robust predictions.  Kumykov told the most senior local apparatchik, Baurzhan Abdishev, that Shakhter will score a few goals in Glasgow and progress into the Champions League group stage.

I always like to hear confidence like this from the opposition camp.  Let Celtic do their talking on the park.

Shakhter are further away from home than any team participating in Champions League history, apart from Celtic who faced the opposite journey last week.  The second half on Wednesday kicks off at 01:45 Kazak time; no matter what the score at the halfway point, the latter part of the game will be when the visitors are at their most vulnerable.

Meanwhile Kazak news report that Shakhter have shipped shirts to some Glasgow-based football fans, who will be attending Celtic Park on Wednesday as newly-recruited Shakhter fans.

Did we mention practicing penalties?  The entire squad should spend time today and tomorrow doing so, but Kris Commons especially.  He is the one penalty taker Shakhter will prepare to face.

Memory of the day:

We lost the first leg of our European Cup, first round, tie against Partizan Tirana in 1979 1-0.  It was thought important for Celtic to score first in the return but Partizan doubled their lead and scored an away goal.

Celtic went on to hit four and progress, although none of the strikers got on the score-sheet, Davie Provan played arguably his best game for the club.

Bring it on……..

  1. Another thing that saddens me is that when a view is given that wants affordable team investment, a view that is critical of the CEO you are accused of Hunnish behaviour and following the practices of Murray.

I would suggest that blind faith and failure to scrutinise board activities is absolutely Hunnish behaviour !!

Well said mate. At a time when we should be getting right behind Neil and the team, some of these posters either need to support Celtic or give the rest of us peace to do so. That Neganon just does my nut in! Is he ever happy?

  3. Billy Sharp to sign for Celtic according to The Sun online………completely underwhelmed if true….

No you are not mad, far from it.

A few years ago, supporters had no interest in the main about finances, players were bought and sold, never a thought about sell on value, it seems that sell on value is all important these days, just another example of the spin emminating from the boredroom.

All we wanted was to see a good team on the park, it’s still the same today, but with all the caveats it seems.

As you say, we will never be like them.

  5. I really don’t understand why anyone would say it’s ok to sell Gary Hooper weeks before the end of a transfer window when there was no replacement lined up and no ready made replacement within the team.

We have done this to death but Samaras is not a striker, Watt is unfancied and Stokes is not as good as Gary Hooper.

Stokes gets injured and you are left with Watt as the only possible replacement.

I have a feeling we are being more cagey with Forster but would now put money on him going.

  6. Telbhoy67 – is it all butterflies and faeries where you are?

Are you going to the game Wednesday?

Paddy the reason why there is so much negativety on this site (and indeed any other celtic site you can care to think of) is because the Board have completely screwed up this transfer window (and it isnt the first). The selling of hooper without a replacement is simply unforgivable.

Are you really saying it isnt?

    ************

How do you know we don’t have a replacement lined up, how do we know that Neil, PL and the scouting team are so stupid that they haven’t been working flat out on this?

When did we decide Celtic weren’t the best on and off the park?

Didn’t NL state that he hoped to bring in a couple of players this week.

Maybe we should run the club on here with everybody getting a vote as to who we buy/sell. Might be a lot of fun.

If its Europa League then I can see him being our Hooper replacement. Hooper replaced him at Scunthorpe, he replaces Hooper at Celtic. Depressing.

At least its the sun so probably nonsense.

I apologise in advance (to avoid a string of posts) – I have taken the same result (and so far have been quite good at scoring ‘duck eggs’ these past 2 weeks).

  10. Can’t see NFL hanging around when the guts of his team are sold and not replaced well.

Would break his heart to do so but he must be so disheartened.

“Celtic will still get the same tilt at the CL next season, through teams we SHOULD beat.”

    Sandman, mebbes aye, mebbes naw.

If we get eliminated on Wednesday, and make an early exit from the Europa, our resultant drop in co-efficient may mean we will not be seeded next season, and we may end up playing the likes of Arsenal, Zenit or Milan. i.e. if our trajectory is downward, our route to the Group stages becomes more difficult.

  12. We have £14m in transfer fees

    We have £21m from CL

    Keep the CL money

But for feck sake get the £14 spent on 3/4 quality players

Im sure the £21m CL money will stop us going bust next week as some would suggest signing a £5m striker would do Rubbish We have once in 3/4 years opportunity to really kick on or we go backwards every 3 years and then rebuild keeping money inhouse

“The most important game for seasons and we can’t sell out.”

Why do we continue to raise the bar with our criteria for success?

We did not sell out last year’s two vital qualifiers against Helsinki and Helsinborg, as both fetched just above 50k attendances.

A similar crowd attended the Sion qualifier the year before.

Only 37 k turned up for the Europa group game against Udinese, 28k for Rennes and 33k for Atletico Madrid.

Where does this expectation of regular 60k come from? We have rarely had that reliability of crowd.

  16. Paddy – because, given that by everyone’s perspective, we are playing our most important game now we should have had the replacement in and bedded well before this or we shouldnt have sold hooper until after the CL qualifier. Nothing else makes sense. They havent got someone in and we are about to go out cos we cant score goals – so they have failed already.

There is no hiding place from this – no excuse. Its unforgivable. Dont you think so?

Us running the club would at least mean we cared more about football results than the numbers on a spreadsheet.

  17. Neganon

I’ll be at the game as always, what makes you ask that? I will also be encouraging and supporting Neil and the boys in print on here when I can. My point was that you don’t seem to see any positives, Maybe you are just glass half empty type of guy,but lets concentrate on getting solidly behind the Neil and the team at least until after the game on Wednesday Keevins ,Jackson and co don’t need any encouragement from here!

I said weeks ago on the Blog that we knew Hooper and Wanyama were going, and that we could have picked up Russell and Daly.

But was slagged by the usual clique. Who think top class Europeans are going to come to Scotland.

To be fair – did we not have 2 early KO’s (18:15 or 18:30) because of reinstatement?

  24. Telbhoy of course I will cheer em on on Wednesday. As for the media I couldnt care less about what they say or think. But that does not mean we shouldnt be angry at what the Board have (or more accurately havent) done. We were in a position of great strength and it has been entirely mismanaged. We dont need the media to tell us – its staring us right in the face.

You need a firm hand on the cheque book as well, don’t get me wrong I would love for us to bring in 5 x 5 million pound players, but not knowing all the facts I will be more than happy to leave it to the bhoys that do.

Gary Hooper didn’t want to stay at our great club for various reasons I am informed, sold sticker, move on and bring in guys that want to be here.
