Shakhter sounding bolshy on Celtic

1231

I hear the modest noises which Shakhter manager Viktor Kumykov made after their win over Celtic last week have been replaced by more robust predictions.  Kumykov told the most senior local apparatchik, Baurzhan Abdishev, that Shakhter will score a few goals in Glasgow and progress into the Champions League group stage.

I always like to hear confidence like this from the opposition camp.  Let Celtic do their talking on the park.

Shakhter are further away from home than any team participating in Champions League history, apart from Celtic who faced the opposite journey last week.  The second half on Wednesday kicks off at 01:45 Kazak time; no matter what the score at the halfway point, the latter part of the game will be when the visitors are at their most vulnerable.

Meanwhile Kazak news report that Shakhter have shipped shirts to some Glasgow-based football fans, who will be attending Celtic Park on Wednesday as newly-recruited Shakhter fans.

Did we mention practicing penalties?  The entire squad should spend time today and tomorrow doing so, but Kris Commons especially.  He is the one penalty taker Shakhter will prepare to face.

Memory of the day:

We lost the first leg of our European Cup, first round, tie against Partizan Tirana in 1979 1-0.  It was thought important for Celtic to score first in the return but Partizan doubled their lead and scored an away goal.

Celtic went on to hit four and progress, although none of the strikers got on the score-sheet, Davie Provan played arguably his best game for the club.

Bring it on……..

  1. Haha you pesky bank account loving kids.

A chance to get more money in the bank – suggenly fraser forster is rubbish.

Brilliant – just think how much excitement you will get looking at that bank balance.

    Bring it on

  2. Always been a fan of WGS but if we’re not 2 in front first half..will be biting flesh for the next 45.

Should have way too much for this bunch, but didn’t think we’d be chasing a deficit. However all should come good.

    KTF.

  3. BT-25 is youngish for GK ,but IMO his habits i.e shouting, commanding his box ,marking his territory should have been instilled from 15-16 years old.Hope your recovery is going well HH

  4. KOJO,

I know that you did not spend much time in this Dear Green Place.

    No matter.

I would just like to know if you would recognise what the colloquialism.. PWICK..

    means in this town.

You fit it to a T.

    God help you.

  6. As I Thought @ 18.07

The current first choice ROI keeper is David Forde, plays for Millwall and a late developer at 36 years of age. The lad is out with a knee injury but has been a revelation since he took over from Shay Given. Kieran Westwood, Sunderland is replacing him at present. Celtic tried to sign Westwood some time ago but Martin O’Neil wouldn’t let him go.

    We are unique.

Name another team in world football whose balance sheet is better supported?

And I once thought we were a football team first and foremost.

  8. as I thought

You are Right… Forster, is an Excellent Keeper.

That is Why he is in Demand.

    Just as Boruc wiz.

Folk, know a Good Thing When They see wan.

Forster, wull Go.. And ..well.. That’s That.

    tactics aside it should be noted that;

    ___________________________________

Tactics = GK coaching/ zonal marking etc., etc.

    Now for the avoidance of doubt;

    – I am not a member of FF’s fan club.

    – I do think he should command his 6 yard box.

    – I think there are weaker positions in the Team than him.

    – I am not convinced by the performance of the back 4(s) so far this season.

    – I am more worried about the Team’s ability to score 3+ goals on Wednesday.

  10. let me guess – fraser wants away and therefore wont play well. Fraser is having family problems.

    Yada yada yada

Why dont you just be honest and say that you love looking at big bank account numbers

    you couldnae make it up!

  11. hankray

Cheers for the info. Any idea who is Sunderlands first choice just now? Westwood or the guy they signed from arsenal?

  12. Fan a tic – we are indeed unique. Perhaps celtic are about to take up an idea I gave them a few years back. Start playing with 10 men – it will save money!

Balance sheet lovers with adore it.

Celtic are truelly a radical club.

  13. the glorious balance sheet on

I don`t think that the time difference will be that much of an issue to Karagandy on Wednesday, they have already shown that they can handle this.

The time difference is 5 hours so a 1945 kick off here is 0045 in Karagandy. When they played against Skenderbeu in Albania in the previous round the kick off time was 20.00 Central European Time (1900 British Summer Time and 0100 Karagandy time).

They scored their second goal of that game on 68 minutes when it was getting close to 2am Kazakhstan time.

  18. If thats Cardiff in for Figgbonasson, any slim chance now gone. We cannot compete with their financial backing

On that point, did anyone watch the Cardiff game on Sunday?

They’ve become a joke, a play thing for a cash rich Malaysian. Actually felt a bit sorry for Malky, when their chairman came on the pitch at the end he really stole his thunder.

Before long Cardiff City will have changed their name too.

  19. Snake Plissken on

Make no bones about this, if Celtic go out on Wednesday Fraser will be sold or will want to go.

When Keevins says this will be a catastrophe he has finally got something right.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Until I see the team I’ll hold out hope but if we’re sitting on Thursday into the Europa things will be very hard for a very long time.

  20. I’d be disappointed to see big Fraser leave as he’s been a good goalkeeper for us but if Benfica offer £5m there’s no doubt it’s taxi to the airport time.

And I logged on for signing news…

    HH

  21. As for FF, I’ve said before any offer above £5m, take it.

Get Given in for a couple of years – once was a world class goalkeeper, only started to drop his standards slightly this year at Villa.

However, would still say he’s better than FF, and his experience could be vital for a young back line now that Kelvin’s gone.

    HH

  22. too true Snake

But its okay they will tell us they will invest every penny of the FF money in the playing staff over a business cycle (aye right).

  23. Roy and Patrick – just think of the numbers on the balance sheet.

    Mmmmmmmmmm…….balance sheet……..

If Lawell sells Fraser then it puts Lenny in a very awkward place.

Lenny has stated that Fraser is not for sale.

  26. Doubtful if Karakandi have ever played before a 60,000 hostile crowd before and it can be inspiration or trepidation for them on the night.

Of course we were fed some blarney last week about the small crowd that was expected in Astana being an away ground and the place had a full house of 30,000 fans.

  27. The Spirit Of Arthur Lee on

If FF leaves then it is time to give Mulgrew a game in goals

    Makes sense to me

  28. spirit of arthur – hadnt thought of that – maybe they can all take shots each in goal – or we could play with a backy in?

    Think of the saving!!

  29. Professor Green on

Another one of these “See if we don’t get through to the champions league” fans on SSB there.

We have just over 48 hrs to find out, but it seems some people feel the need to go on the radio and dish out threats before a ball is kicked.

Why not wait and see, and concentrate efforts on supporting the team on Wednesday night. The aftermath will take care of itself. Leave the threats to the dead team’s fans.

  30. Hamiltontim.

Tut tut, don’t get your knickers in a twist.

We’re dining out before the game on Wednesday, do you fancy it.
