Shakhter sounding bolshy on Celtic

1231

I hear the modest noises which Shakhter manager Viktor Kumykov made after their win over Celtic last week have been replaced by more robust predictions.  Kumykov told the most senior local apparatchik, Baurzhan Abdishev, that Shakhter will score a few goals in Glasgow and progress into the Champions League group stage.

I always like to hear confidence like this from the opposition camp.  Let Celtic do their talking on the park.

Shakhter are further away from home than any team participating in Champions League history, apart from Celtic who faced the opposite journey last week.  The second half on Wednesday kicks off at 01:45 Kazak time; no matter what the score at the halfway point, the latter part of the game will be when the visitors are at their most vulnerable.

Meanwhile Kazak news report that Shakhter have shipped shirts to some Glasgow-based football fans, who will be attending Celtic Park on Wednesday as newly-recruited Shakhter fans.

Did we mention practicing penalties?  The entire squad should spend time today and tomorrow doing so, but Kris Commons especially.  He is the one penalty taker Shakhter will prepare to face.

Memory of the day:

We lost the first leg of our European Cup, first round, tie against Partizan Tirana in 1979 1-0.  It was thought important for Celtic to score first in the return but Partizan doubled their lead and scored an away goal.

Celtic went on to hit four and progress, although none of the strikers got on the score-sheet, Davie Provan played arguably his best game for the club.

Bring it on……..

  1. After the sale of the balance sheet, Peter Lawwel said, ‘Now that the club has no players left, fans will be invited to watch me move numbers around the largest spreadsheet in the world. We will be turning the floodlights into laser projectors and will project from my ipad onto the pitch. Stadium goers can use stadium wifi to upload their own versions and we will have debates on whose numbers are the best. Mine will always be by the way. £60 seems like a fair ticket price for such a supreme event. ‘

  3. I give up. 48 hours before a crucial game and all the cynics want to do is poke fun at the club. I’m as disappointed as any other fan that we did not have a suitable replacement for Hooper in particular PRIOR to his departure. However I’m also glad and reassured that my Club is debt-free and that our future looks assured and positive.

Hope you are well bud…Enjoyed our pint together the last time I was up the road.

  5. corkcelt – gallows humour is all we have left. The sheer absurdity of the situation and now the desperation of some supporters to sell of FF really does leave us with no option but to point out how stupid it has all become.

This is the most important game for many a year. Qualify and we maintain last years feel good factor. This also makes Celtic more attractive in the transfer market. No better reasons for 60k sell out. But sadly there won’t be. We laugh at the Huns gloating that they have 45 plus at lower league games. I know they give tickets away but would we have the same if it was us in the third tier? The most important game for seasons and we can’t sell out.

I think writing about someone and using their surname in isolation, when first mentioning them , is just plain rude.

Even the Red Tops , not counting a headline, don’t refer to NFL by his surname at the start of what might even turn out to be a right hatchet job.

    It reads like bad manners.

After first mention, non fawning articles might use the surname only but even then it looks churlish.

    For example:

‘ Celtic boss Neil Lennon hopes to be able to boost his striking options today prior to the return leg of the Champions League Qualifier against Shaktar Karagandy.

Lennon’s team will not have their troubles to seek after yet another poor performance on Saturday against regular bogey Team Inverness…..’

These rules of scribbling, natch, never apply when writing about the bestest young manager of the decade, ‘fishul, Alistair McMoist, who must only be referred to as Ally, ‘Coisty or Gaffer.

    Dexter take note.

    Something I dont understand….

It seems like some of the happyclappers object to the mineshafters criticizing or even questioning anyone (PL, NFL, players…) or anything (tactics) to do with Celtic, but have no problem slagging off the mineshafter

I just read Sandman’s post at 19:14 which seems to urge fellow celtic fans (described as as ” lazy greetin’-faced conceited malcontents”) to pull together..

So, leaving aside the issue that people can and do have different views on what is best for the club, a rallying cry for unity is best served by crapping on fellow supporters?

I’m not going to say its ironic… but it doesn’t make any bloody sense to me!

No is the short answer – just think that our board have done not too bad.

People on here criticising relentlessly about all things Celtic.

Buy a player – buy a striker – don’t sell, then when the press conjure a link to anyone we get not ‘good enough for us comments in abundance’.

The scouts and Neil Lennon do a fantastic job with our limited budget in my opinion.

Again 100% agree with you, we are weaker just now than we were this time last season. My point is if FF is unhappy then sell him. He wants to be in the England squad for World Cup (if they qualify) and thinks that he has a better chance of achieving that by playing elsewhere, most probably the EPL. He played CL with us last season, was magnificent, got rave reviews down south, and still not a sniff of a squad call up. That’s why he’ll want to leave. Remember he only signed last summer as no one came in for him. There were rumours of West Ham wanting him and he only signed for us after they signed Jaaskelainen.

  20. I am heartily sick of people who feel that investment in our team and trying to be the best we can be is the road to destruction in the way the Zombies self combusted.

They died because they are stupid and corrupt.

    We are not.

Please do not compare us to those scum bags.

I simply want us to improve our team with quality players which we can afford to give us the best chance of success on the park.

    Is that so wrong?

Do we not all want that.

It would appear that some on here cannot see the wood for the trees and cannot see failure to invest leads to drop in standards, inferior players , lower crowds and less profit.

    Am I mad ?

Get over yourself and back CELTIC.

    It’s about feckin’ time.

  23. In all seriousness I think the timing of the Fraser Forster news coming out is unfortunate. Judging by Asonofdans comments last night and now news coming out today from Portugal it seems Benfica have bid. Judging by previous board dealing in the sales market I think we will bite at the numbers being mentioned.

I would also suspect we have a replacement lined up. Perhaps a champions league one and a Europa league version.

  24. Paddy the reason why there is so much negativety on this site (and indeed any other celtic site you can care to think of) is because the Board have completely screwed up this transfer window (and it isnt the first). The selling of hooper without a replacement is simply unforgivable.

Are you really saying it isnt?
