Shared business plan? Not in a million years

1070

I see comment in today’s Telegraph about a shortage of staff to facilitate a club which occasionally hosts circa 50,000 fans at Ibrox.  Let me put some meat on the financial bones of that particular project.

During 2010-11, the last season Paul Murray and Dave King were directors at Ibrox, Rangers spent £27.7m on wages with the bulk of that, some £21.5m, going on players and football management, while £6.2m went on non-football related wages.

That same season 37,599 season ticket sales were bought, all at ‘full price’, of course, which brought in £12.9m (this is net of vat, remember).  That was a bumper European season for Rangers.  They qualified for the Champions League, where they faced Manchester United, Bursaspor and Valencia.  They then dropped to the Europa League, where they beat Sporting Lisbon before going out to PSV Eindhoven.  Total ticket sales, including all cup, European, away support and individual match sales, came to £19.9m.

Newco’s revenue from all ticket sales and hospitality sales last season was £12.4m.  They also paid £1.629 in equipment hire and plant depreciation, this figure is not coming down, while costs for police, insurance, rates, water, electricity, gas, IT, office consumables, cleaning and the odd onerous contract was £16.4m

So consider: the last non-football wages at oldco was £6.2m and total ticket and hospitality sales last season at newco was £12.4m, while a recent peak for season ticket sales at oldco was £12.9m.

The only way modern football is a viable business at a stadium which regularly holds circa 50,000 people is with the support of healthy retail and merchandise deals, and with regular group stage European football.

Newco don’t have access to Europe, as they are a newco, and they don’t have healthy retail and merchandise deals.

If they eventually qualify for Europe they will need to eliminate seeded teams at every round to progress to group stage football.  They are not in as healthy a position as they were when Charles Green took over.  Green and his cronies had their business plan spiked, before those onerous contracts kicked in, by way of compensation, ironically, leaving the new regime with the prize they planned for, but it’s a battered looking trophy.

Now they have as much money as tub thumping can generate and Sugar Daddies are prepared to pony up.  No one has yet explained how this club is a viable entity.

For the record, we don’t share a business plan.  Not in a million years.

Dumbsay always comes across as a true fan of the new club.

He even has his dream job – cutting and pasting Level5PR emails.

I don’t expect common sense from the compliance officer – the fact that Connolly hasn’t been cited for simulation gives us an indication of what to expect.

In reality the red cards for Virgil and Paton should be downgraded to yellows (in the latter’s case for trying to get Thomson to send-off an opponent).

Ciftci should be banned for kicking Broony in the head and Butcher should be given a yellow for his tangle with Virgil – which would open a can of worms, and is unlikely to be the outcome.

  4. Geordie Munro @ 10:30,

Nail on the head, the play had moved on unless their was a specific offence such as a head butt, punch, kick in the head, the officials saw they should have stopped the hand bags, had a talk with the Captains And moved on.

We’ll see, this is where I have a problem with my benefit of the doubt stuff .

    Lionroar67 @ 08:58,

    Well the dissimulation

So they can cite Ciftci who is banned anyway but they can’t cite Butcher.

Nonsense, as the SFA have shown us over and over, where there’s a will there’s a way.

    It’s cheating.

    Hail Hail

Its not cheating if its in the rules. All the clubs signed up to these rules. Its only when something ridiculous happens like this, the anomaly shows up.The culprit in all of this is the linesman. He is the one who witnessed it.He is the one who stopped the game to draw the refs attention. He is the one who drew Paton aside. Its his total fek up that has caused this.

In saying that, because of the fek up,VVD should be issued with a yellow,if only for the sake of fair play.No use us all ranting and raving until the verdict is issued on Thursday. Then we can go to town.

So a player punches another player and knocks him out, wrong guy gets sent off and the other gets off Scot free? Ridiculous rule.

Correct. An absolute farce.Imagine a key eye witness in court telling the jury they saw the whole thing from a couple of yards, then pointing the finger at a totally innocent person.

    Not guilty.

  7. I can accept the “Loophole”reason. What I cant accept is the total disregard for the other “Loophole”that could have been used.TV evidence. Many players have been found guilty under this rule.If Butcher has escaped the refs red card and the ref has sent off an innocent player, then that players red gets rescinded, and the TV evidence is then used,as no action was taken at the time by any official against Butcher.

    Make sense?.

  8. Make sure you arrive nice and early at CQN 11 on Friday night. Doors open at 6.30pm and as well as having a FREE pint on arrival you will meet our special guest who is a Celtic first team star. He’ll only be there for the first hour so don’t be late. The Bhoy is a real STAR too!

  9. oh c’mon gentlemen we all know that the SFA will uphold VVD’s ban. And Celtic will say nothing. Jeez arent you paying attention?

I thought Celtic made a statement yesterday.

  12. Turkeybhoy @ 11:01,

Well I’d agree with the most part…

But this is why I think it’s cheating.

The linesman see’s a stramash, instead of taking the action he might take if it was say ICT v St Johnstone, he takes the view he could even the game up a bit.

    Now

If the linesman was playing chess, this would be called exchanging pieces, a Perfectly legit move.

Not so much when you are officiating a Football match.

    Just my opinion.

    Hail Hail

  13. sorry your honour but my clientcant face this murder charge and the court should be dismissed because the police arrested a bloke at the time and a court found him guilty, only to be proven wrong when he wasnt actually there at the time.

yes my client did stab the man to death but surely there is a loophole as you have already convicted the wrong man

Glad to see our faithful buying up the briefs for the Cup replay next Wednesday.

Imagine how embarrassing it would be if Rangers v Alloa in a virtually meaningless league game got a bigger crowd than Celtic v Dundee Utd as we aim for a rare treble.

I can imagine King at his pals, perhaps justifiably, scoring a few points. Even more so as our club has reduced the prices as a jpositive gesture to attract support.

And we may have even captured the first of our 3 trophies by then too.

I do hope our support start to show they are more than just for europe types.

The justification that we don’t want to contribute to the SFA is a ridiculous notion. We are on for a treble. If we back the team then we can win this together.

Like in the cup at Love St with 10 men in 1980 or v Hearts in the centenary semi, or even v Arabs in centenary final or v Rangers in 1980 final.

Or am I misskng what being a supporter is all about ?

    Burnley78

hi i dont think you are missing the point about being a supporter at all

however i think our club are,and in a massive way.

I would like to see every single economic interaction with Celtic be logged.

    a membership scheme,

A Celtic Smart card which covers everything in your relationship, from your seat(s) at Parkhead down to buying a keyring out the superstore for a ‘hun’- £1,

let the Celtic fan have one point of entry to all the multi-platforms the new media age gives.

with todays digital technology it should be a given.

Reason i suggest this is we have these miscellaneous games once or twice a season,be prepared, that prep would be helped if we had a membership scheme in my view,so we could reward fans for their input.

    hope your well mate :-)

  16. Looking at SFA site…….

    VVD classed as Violent Conduct.

    Paton classed as Sending Off.

I posted the other day that the officials “story” would be that Paton was sent off for something other than the fankle with VVD.

Does the different classification lend weight to my suspicion?

Any one know if the terminology used by SFA is significant ?

Of course, if Paton was not a mistake then it means that the Compliance Officer has viewed the stramash and seen nothing wrong with Butcher’s part in it.

  17. Chairbhoy,

The only bit I am not going with is the deliberate sending off of the wrong man so only VVD gets done.Sorry.As Capt Mainwaring would say”Jones, you entering the realms of fantasy there”.

  18. Stein yes I know but once the SFA do the deed that they are clearly lining up celtic will remain silent and we will undoubtedly be told that the silence is a materstroke and that things are going on behind the scenes or, dare I say it, our silence is dignified.

    Dontcha think?

  19. iki

Paton grabbed the assistant referee by the arm. It may not be mistaken identity

  20. Dont think I have ever read a more boak inducing article than Ralstons today in the Retard.

Pure unadulterated hero worship, put into print. The old”Marble staircase”to them is a like a night with Sophie Vergara to the rest of us.

  21. Iki, if VVD’s challenge is classed as Violent Conduct, then we should compile a video of similar challenges by DU players on our players from the same match and challenge the SFA to justify why all those miscreants weren’t similarly red-carded for their violent conduct.

I reckon we should win this treble and then refuse to play in either of the cups again until the SFA give us guarantees that the rules will be applied fairly and equally to all teams.

Without Celtic in the cups they’ll struggle to get sponsorship.

  22. antipodean red on

    monaghan,

That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard in ages, Robbie Neilson scouting their players, you wouldn’t touch any of them, even with someone else’s money, oh wait a minute, did I say someone else’s money!

  23. My take on it is, if the linesman got one wrong, then he got both wrong, simple as that, anything other than that then we have an agenda going on here in Scotland, and it’s against one team, being right doesent make me paranoid, VVD should not even be charged, violent conduct? Lol, that’s what Butcher should be charged with, I have a funny feeling I’m not or Celtic are going to happy with the result on this one, AGAIN..

  25. The bit i’m no getting is ……………..if the linesman was so sure it was 2 red cards, why then did he get the wrong Dun/Utd player?

  26. Winning Captains,

I, unfortunately, am unable to attend CQN11 on Friday night due to the fact that I have a date on Friday morning with an orthopaedic surgeon in Monklands Hospital to have a total knee replacement.

I hope the evening is a wonderful success and raises all the money needed.

Say hello to Patricia Ferns for me, she and I go back some 20 years.

I would be delighted if you could give to either Paul or Kevin the Songs and Dreams CD. It was the only copy I had..

Not sure they will say nothing this time as both Ronny in his post-match interview and the club have already flagged concerns.
