Shared business plan? Not in a million years

1070

I see comment in today’s Telegraph about a shortage of staff to facilitate a club which occasionally hosts circa 50,000 fans at Ibrox.  Let me put some meat on the financial bones of that particular project.

During 2010-11, the last season Paul Murray and Dave King were directors at Ibrox, Rangers spent £27.7m on wages with the bulk of that, some £21.5m, going on players and football management, while £6.2m went on non-football related wages.

That same season 37,599 season ticket sales were bought, all at ‘full price’, of course, which brought in £12.9m (this is net of vat, remember).  That was a bumper European season for Rangers.  They qualified for the Champions League, where they faced Manchester United, Bursaspor and Valencia.  They then dropped to the Europa League, where they beat Sporting Lisbon before going out to PSV Eindhoven.  Total ticket sales, including all cup, European, away support and individual match sales, came to £19.9m.

Newco’s revenue from all ticket sales and hospitality sales last season was £12.4m.  They also paid £1.629 in equipment hire and plant depreciation, this figure is not coming down, while costs for police, insurance, rates, water, electricity, gas, IT, office consumables, cleaning and the odd onerous contract was £16.4m

So consider: the last non-football wages at oldco was £6.2m and total ticket and hospitality sales last season at newco was £12.4m, while a recent peak for season ticket sales at oldco was £12.9m.

The only way modern football is a viable business at a stadium which regularly holds circa 50,000 people is with the support of healthy retail and merchandise deals, and with regular group stage European football.

Newco don’t have access to Europe, as they are a newco, and they don’t have healthy retail and merchandise deals.

If they eventually qualify for Europe they will need to eliminate seeded teams at every round to progress to group stage football.  They are not in as healthy a position as they were when Charles Green took over.  Green and his cronies had their business plan spiked, before those onerous contracts kicked in, by way of compensation, ironically, leaving the new regime with the prize they planned for, but it’s a battered looking trophy.

Now they have as much money as tub thumping can generate and Sugar Daddies are prepared to pony up.  No one has yet explained how this club is a viable entity.

For the record, we don’t share a business plan.  Not in a million years.

    Well the dissimulation

So they can cite Ciftci who is banned anyway but they can’t cite Butcher.

Nonsense, as the SFA have shown us over and over, where there’s a will there’s a way.

So you’ve exercised your right not to go to a match, fair do’s…………Why do you not allow others to exercise their rights to do the same?

I’m from Ballybofey and would recommend flying to Derry and on from there. Letterkenny is a good town and quite lively too. I do know there are a group of celts from Clydebank in Ballybofey on the weekend of June 19th. They stay in jacksons hotel and drink in mckelveys just across the road. I know it will be a sad occasion for you but if you need reminded that your part of the biggest and best family in the world we will be there to give you a pick me up. Hail hail. You can get my e mail address from Paul if you need and further information.

  10. Re the Butcher offence

Surely if he was going to be punished it would happen because he had been highlighted to the SFA as having committed an offence which the referee or assistant had not noticed ?

If no one did this then I suppose no one can really complain the SFA have upheld their rules.

Our administrators should have covered this situation by the deadline for this on Tuesday.

Silly rules maybe but we do know them.

  12. Jungle Jim Hot Smoked,

It is not only the cost of tickets for the midweek game, it is the whole package and the additional hassle it involves. i.e. Time off work, school etc.

Proportionally we have had less traditional KO times this season than most clubs and I would wager our supporters proportionally do more travelling than most to attend games at Parkhead.

High profile European games will always look after themselves.

You’re slating folk for not turning up on one hand then state you’re not going to Hampden cause you don’t like the stadium.

    You’ve started winding early today.

People make choices, those that want to stay away, well it’s their loss.

For those that can’t make it along for either financial, or personal reasons, they have my sympathy, and I hope their circumstances allow them to return soon.

Life passes by very quickly, not being able to go along and see the Tic, would diminish my existance considerably. I just love being a Celtic supporter.

    Have a good day

Fair points but, quite obviously, I did not make my main point very clearly.

I was trying to say that being critical of Sevco `only` attracting 35k on a Tuesday night ( even allowing for the `euphoria` of a new Board) was unfair when compared with the number of tickets sold so far for our Wednesday replay against United.I then, probably wrongly, went on to mention to schools of thought on reasons for attendance/non-attendance.

I was not criticising those who choose not to go to games.

    Sorry for the confusion.

    JJ

  18. Burnley78 @ 09:08, 09:09,

Now I didn’t see the first half on Sunday but from what I gather the referee didn’t see the incident clearly, it was the linesman who claimed he saw it.

The wrong Dundee United guy was sent off, so clearly the lineman didn’t see it properly.

Their point wasn’t to ensure Butcher wouldn’t make the final, as you say he’s easily replaceable. The point was to make sure VVD didn’t make the final.

    It’s cheating.

    Hail Hail

Unfortunately those are the rules. They might be completely stupid but they have to be applied as they are.

If it was our player would we be happy if the rules were ignored and he was banned?

I can’t believe this hasn’t came up before mind you……

  20. Geordie Munro on

    JJ,

Attendance league match where it now seems the norm to include season book sales even if they don’t turn up should not be compared to a pay for replay between two clubs who will meet each other 4 times in 3 weeks imo.

And that’s before you factor in the call to arms that mob have had to support their ‘what the fans wanted’ board.

  21. Geordie Munro on

I take it this loophole is a similar loophole to the one that allowed both Wes Brown and John o’shea to escape punishment?

I’d recommend The Harbour Inn in Buncrana if you’re going to be in that part of Donegal. Very clean, spacious rooms and good bar/ restauraunt food. A short walk to the Drift Inn and Buncrana town itself. Used it mainly for golf trips in the past, never been disappointed. If you enjoy a steak you have to try the Firebox Restaurant, Fahan it’s a short drive from the Harbour.

I don’t think the above will be of much help to you, sorry. Bigshuggy’s advice would be the better bet, I think. Golfing pals have stayed in Dunlo in the past, which might be an option for you. I can try n’ get a recommendation from them if you want. Good luck with you’re journey. Your post struck a chord with me, my aul da’s oldest brother suffered a similar fate. Torpedoed off the New York coast in 1942 on his first trip. Hope you can get some solace from what will obviosly be a difficult trip for you. Good luck.

I am going to have to give myself a lesson on clarity of expression!

My main point was that I thought criticising a 35,000 crowd was strange . I tried to support my view by using our projected attendance V Utd as a barometer.

As an add on, I made comments on frequently expressed views re going to games.

I did not criticise anyone for choosing whether or not to go to games nor in selecting which games to go to.

I’m not sure if “loophole” is the right word. The rule is basically incomplete. It needs to be changed to say the guilty player takes on the ban from the “wrong” player. Can’t believe this hasn’t came up before.
