Shiels has history on his side tomorrow

923

It would be easy for Celtic to take their eye of the ball.  A huge Scottish Cup game at Tannadice last week, which was more difficult than the score-line suggests, before Neil Lennon had what will have been a few traumatic days.  The tension in the west of Scotland ahead of next weekend’s game at Ibrox is already tangible; in truth, we could do with some quiet preparation time ahead of tomorrow’s Scottish Communities League Cup Final against Kilmarnock.

Kilmarnock have no such worries.  The Cup Final tomorrow is their season.  Out of the Scottish Cup and certain to finish in the bottom six of the SPL, their focus will be absolute tomorrow.  Kenny Shiels’ team have won only four league games since October  but you will not need me to tell you two of those victories were against Rangers.

Two home wins within six days against Rangers and Aberdeen, the latter on 3 December, suggested Killie were certain to challenge for a European place this season, but things have moved south since then.  They beat St Mirren on 2 January at Rugby Park before that impressive performance dumped Rangers on their bums at Ibrox last month.

Kenny Shiels made it onto Radio Scotland during the week to tell the nation that Celtic were so good it would be a travesty if they didn’t win the treble.  I totally agree (and I’m warming to this guy) but Kenny knows exactly what he is doing.  He intends to win the cup tomorrow and will know every potential weakness in the Celtic team.

History suggests he has a decent chance.  Since winning five consecutive finals (until 1969), Celtic competed in 20 finals, winning only seven.  We have some form to make up in this tournament.

why move players i said on? simple

cha, not very good and plays little, paid 10k per week

    m. wilson, always injuried and plays little, 8k per week

loovens, my 6 year old neice is less of a coward, 15k per week

o’dea, loan out and will not be back, 6k per week

dan, only a handful of good games for celtic and out long term, 15k per week

thompson, never worked out, 3k per week

mcginn, loaned out because not good enough, 5k per week

mccourt, nowhere near first 11, 10k per week

jaurez, think i’ve got more chance of playing, 10k per week

murphy, nowhere near first or second team, 10k per week

radmussion, dont think lenny rates, 12k per week

ki, like the kid but least used midfielders, we need a striker with power and pace and selling him would give us funds to stregthen that area of team, 10k per week

how much wages do you think these players take from celtic? maybe 140k per week or 7 million per year for very little

    we could:

sign other quality young players each and every year, doing what porto etc… do to ensure we always have quality kids to promote to the first team knowing that they will one day grow into better players and move onto bigger/ better leagues etc…

keep the better players in our squad a little longer and i think it makes good sense to secure those players before selling when time is right i.e. hooper, stokes, ledley, victor, rongue, mathews

spend money upgrading celtic park ‘celtic triange’ clubs, pubs, hotel etc… to increase revenue and turnover to feed into improving the money for football department

we have for more than two decades not got enough bang for our bucks and we need to change that if we want to become succesful on a domestic and european stage

AntrimKev….yes….a firm of London lawyers have approached St Mirren chairman indicating an interest…..He declined……due to the fact that they have a ‘connection’ to rankers, and the suspicion is they are trying to buy St Mirren, put them out of business, and use their SPL ‘SHARE’ to get the buns into SPL next season ….. detail still coming out (if confirmed, it means there is a plan to liquidate rankers to get rid of the debt, and this is a contingency for getting them back into SPL… not sure of the technicalities, but wouldn’t pu ANYHING past that lot……back to Barca game now.but this will unfold from tomorrow…..big implications for the current bhuns. ….. bet the wee half time commentator from last season will be embarrassed…..LOL

I thought we were going to have to wear the 3rd kit – Grey and Green. Niether team will wear home kit. I think Killies 2nd kit is yellow!

Maybe, just maybe, those Dundee Utd players won’t fancy division 3 football next season.

  13. Winning the league at home against St Johnstone…

… now that would bring back memories.

  14. For all those who claim that Irish rugby is an elitist sport, why does Croke Park hold the world record for a club rugby match of 83,000 when Munster played Leinster in the Heineken Cup semi final in 2009?

Would you say it’s a elitist sport to Paul O’Connell?

Irish rugby does a tremendous job of uniting both communities in Ireland.

People here say they want a united Ireland but only on their uber-Republican terms.

BTW, Ireland were useless today and that song is a dirge.

  15. when i talk about signing good young players am thinking the very best 16,17,18,19,20 year olds, by the time they are 21 or 22 they are never going to come to us because they cost to much and earn to much money elsewhere.

the celtic scouts have proven they can find players and the celtic manager has proved he will trust the scouts judgement. i only hope we are out there looking for the best kids we can get.

one or two quality young players every year will see us go from strength to strength

the strips are too similar????? easy to confuse stripes and hoops especially when not even the same colour

The IRFU ( a right wing organisation) were approached by members of the Ulster branch (a most right wing organisation)who suggested dropping Amhran na hFiann as it was not the anthem of players from the 6 counties. They readily agreed and asked Phil Coulter to supply them with a little number. He gave them “Ireland’s Call.” Only then did they realise that when Uachtaran na hEireann attends a game in Ireland, Amhran na bhFiann must be played. So at home games (ie in Dublin) both are played and at away games only Phil’s little rhyme is jingled. I attended a match between Ireland and Wales in Lansdowne Road in 1986 shortly after this arrangement was made and refused to stand for Phil’s rhyme. Some Ireland supporters were highly indignant saying I should stand for “the anthem.” I replied that I did. I haven’t been to watch Ireland since. It is noticeable that some players such as Ronan O Gara (he who kept his hands in his pockets when Mrs Windsor came to say hello) sing Amhran nabhFiann but not the other one while 6 county representatives do the opposite – but then they don’t have Irish!

  21. Forget next Sunday, the league is done and dusted.

At this moment in time, tomorrow represents Celtic’s biggest game of the season.

Me being me, I would happily take an ultimately meaningless a doing next Sunday were I guaranteed a win tomorrow.

We have eight games to get the points we need. Dropping three next Sunday will in no way stop us winning the league.

We have only one chance at winning tomorrow’s cup. And as Paul has already pointed out, over the last forty years our record in this particular tournament has hardly been glittering.
