Shiels has history on his side tomorrow

923

It would be easy for Celtic to take their eye of the ball.  A huge Scottish Cup game at Tannadice last week, which was more difficult than the score-line suggests, before Neil Lennon had what will have been a few traumatic days.  The tension in the west of Scotland ahead of next weekend’s game at Ibrox is already tangible; in truth, we could do with some quiet preparation time ahead of tomorrow’s Scottish Communities League Cup Final against Kilmarnock.

Kilmarnock have no such worries.  The Cup Final tomorrow is their season.  Out of the Scottish Cup and certain to finish in the bottom six of the SPL, their focus will be absolute tomorrow.  Kenny Shiels’ team have won only four league games since October  but you will not need me to tell you two of those victories were against Rangers.

Two home wins within six days against Rangers and Aberdeen, the latter on 3 December, suggested Killie were certain to challenge for a European place this season, but things have moved south since then.  They beat St Mirren on 2 January at Rugby Park before that impressive performance dumped Rangers on their bums at Ibrox last month.

Kenny Shiels made it onto Radio Scotland during the week to tell the nation that Celtic were so good it would be a travesty if they didn’t win the treble.  I totally agree (and I’m warming to this guy) but Kenny knows exactly what he is doing.  He intends to win the cup tomorrow and will know every potential weakness in the Celtic team.

History suggests he has a decent chance.  Since winning five consecutive finals (until 1969), Celtic competed in 20 finals, winning only seven.  We have some form to make up in this tournament.

Irish Rugby is most definitely elitist…how about taking a look at the schools that play rugby and feed players to the clubs and national squad. You need some serious money to send your kid to them.

In England clubs are not associated with schools. Any youngster that is interested in playing rugby can join the local club which are generally not associated with schools.

The fact that there were 80k at Croke Park only shows how the Irish love their sport and has nothing to do with how the IRFU is set up.

I won’t even bother with your comment about uber-republicans. The team play under the Tricolour so its simple, play the national anthem not some cruddy dirge of a song.

A good reminder, if one were needed. Our League Cup history and especially our record in finals is very poor.

I have attended when we have lost in League Cup Finals like Rangers 0-1 (D Johnstone). Thistle 4-1, Dundee 0-1 (big Tam Captain of Dundee), Rangers 1-2 (Shuggy played), Rangers 2-3 (AET), Rangers 1-2 (Mo Johnston sent off) , Raith Rovers (Pens), Rangers 1-2 (AET last year) ……

In some cases these were slow car crashes waiting to happen, some were mibbery, some we under estimating opposition. In almost all the above we went into the games as favourites.

We need to be on our metal……..A good omen though was frist time I ever heard Hail glorious st patrick at the football was when we were beating Kilmarnock 4-1 at rugby park in the early 70s on or around st patricks day……

4-1 for me tomorrow but we will have to fight for the right to party IMO.

Fortunately for me I have seen us win more than lose 6-2 v Hibs, 6-3 v Hibs, 1-0 v St Johnstone, 2-1 v Rangers (Nicholas game), Dundee Utd 3-0 at Ibrox, Aberdeen 2-0, Kilmarnock 3-0, Dunfermline, Rangers 2-0 AET

I really hope we can add to winning column tomorrow…..I think Neil will have us focused on the park, but the crowd need to turn up backing the team as one not as consumers moaning to be entertained…..

  8. i can see next week (no matter the Motherwell result on Saturday) – Elbows will be out to crock Skoosh or Super Joe and be allowed to get away with it

he should have walked today, along with Edu – but then a straight red means you miss the next game? cant be having that

I know what you’re saying but as you said, the league is won. For the first time in my life we can secure it at Ibrox. It couldn’t get much better for me.

It’s actually a Chelsea hangout and I spent a year drinking there and after having a few spats with the locals they ended up with a healthy respect of Celtic fans ;-) – I don’t do walking away hahahaha!

If fat Mark, the head Chelsea boy, is still hogging the bar then buy him a drink fae John the mouthy Tim.

  14. One thing ah will say is its pointless saying Lenny should pick this team or this guy. Time and again this season ahve watch the manager start with players and when its no going to plan they change without using a sub and its totally effective. Is it just me or does anyone else agree that this is genius. To have guys so tuned in they can change their position at the drop of a hat is amazing.

Hail hail Neil, no prediction for the team or the result tomorrow. Just gonnae have a beer with the woman and enjoy.

    Great tae be a Tim!

  25. Bhoys,

I’m dead nervous about tomorrow. Too much talk about the huns demise, too much talk about next week’s game. Jeso, we are in a Cup final tomorrow , and they don’t come along all the time.

I just wish the players that had been interviewed this week had repeated “we have won nothing (this season)” to reinforce their determination.

That nervous that Im having my first beer in 7 months. It being St. Patrick’s day also helped!!!

Hopefully it’s just nerves. It is, isn’t it?
