Shocking result but expected performance

1103

I’m not going to say I saw this coming, I didn’t see defeat, but when I wrote a couple of days ago that you and I have seen a lot more games like Celtic’s away to Lincoln Red Imps than Brendan Rodgers, and about European football in July, I knew this one was never going to play out in a triumphant manner.

On the first day he was appointed I asked one of you to compile Brendan an Efe highlights video – I assume we were all busy. God love Efe, he’s a fine man by all accounts, but he’s three years into a slump which is not going to end at Celtic. Brendan must now be aware. It’s no longer Efe’s fault if he costs us again.

I also made the point previewing this game that we can’t expect a squad comprising only one addition to last season’s group to perform remarkably different in qualification than a year ago. In this sense, Celtic performed as expected, this one had all the hallmarks of our recent Icelandic ventures.

The manager may not be embarrassed at the result (I suspect he might sound different privately) but many supporters are. Gibraltar has a population similar to Bellshill, but without the football heritage and support mechanism. Would defeat to Bellshill Athletic be embarrassing? You bet. Yesterday’s result was too.

We are woefully slow in build-up and have only one player in the squad who can create the 7 or 8 chances per game needed to get a result, and he’s 33 next month and currently injured.

We remain strong favourites to qualify for the next round but there is an enormous amount of work to be done in the next month. This is not a Champions League squad.

As I’m one of the junior members of CQN, you could actually be my uncle, but yes in this case the family members in question are all in their 70’s/80’s and bunnet adorned hell raisers.

My grandpa married twice, and proved to be a prolific performer both times in boosting the post-war populations…

    The Green Man/Traditionalist,

Given your interest in history. What do you think of Kranjčar, and his previous agent, Dino Pokrovac ? You couldn’t make it up.

*I recall we were in for a Croatian player, might have been krunchie, and eventually walked out of the negations as more and more agents started to get involved.

Thanks for that, never seen it before, really funny.

The Lance Armstrong thing always make me think of the scene in the film The Sting on the train, when Paul Newman cheats better than Robert Shaw at poker.

  8. Weeminger,

Not once did I mention doping. I did state ” all of course completely innocent ” however I cannot blame you for thinking that.

    Whitedoghunch,

So the end justifies the means because it raises money for charity. Where does that principle end ??

    Ellboy,

A sick, disgraceful ” celebrity DJ ” who is now deceased raised many millions for children’s charity. Many a blind eye was turned because he was popular and was raising millions . In a different scale from doping, but does raising millions through lies and cheating count as mitigation. ? Parents of children who benefited may be better placed to answer this . I cannot.

Armstrong cheated the cheats at cycling a sport. If the cheats he beat had won instead 99% sure none of them would have set up as successful a foundation as LIVESTRONG. Countless people benefitted from all this money, lives were saved. Or Contador and his mates could have cheated their way to more titles for themselves. No choice to make really.

To compare it to the DJ you mention and what he did/alleged to have done is way off, way way off, not in bthe same universe.

So Lance Armstrong had no choice ? Yes his foundation does good, but it was built on lies, deceit and cheating. It seems the end does justify the means. however I cannot argue with that if the good outweighs the bad.

From a purely sporting perspective ; Single handed he has virtually removed all credibility and tarnished participants, past and present from the sport of cycling.

i think that the sport of cycling was tarnished by cheating prior to Lance and may well even still have cheats in their midst. A shame for the sport obviously. Worth remembering that Lance Armstrong was himself a cancer sufferer/survivor and my personal opinion is that if his cheating helped the advancement towards a cure then I can more than live with it.

A very good evening to everyone, logging off now.

I am sure Brendan will sort everything out in time for the return leg next week. Hopefully he will pay LG up front, instead of on the wing. Looking forward to seeing the manager make us a better team, whoever he plays. & whoever he buys, we will pay for them in full and tell the SFA about all of their remuneration.

Temp has dropped big time today, down to 38 deg, bliss :-)

Doping at the cycling, they all do it, every single one of them, I know a cyclist from here, he is in France just now, told me a while back that it’s all about not getting caught.

Athletics, years ago I worked with a bloke who was an official at Athletics Scotland, any time there was an event in Scotland they were issued with guidelines on who and who were not to be tested, this was back in the late 80s.

The fairest way would let them all do what they wanted, the best chemists would then win :-)

“Celtic park is a hard place to develop. You are either brilliant all the time or you get absolute pelters from your own fans”.

This is not my expereience. Over a period of time, if someone is continually missing in action or hiding and I believe this is true in Bitton’s case, Celtic supporters will eventually voice their frustrations. Celtic supporters in my experience support for the most part.
