Shocking result but expected performance

1103

I’m not going to say I saw this coming, I didn’t see defeat, but when I wrote a couple of days ago that you and I have seen a lot more games like Celtic’s away to Lincoln Red Imps than Brendan Rodgers, and about European football in July, I knew this one was never going to play out in a triumphant manner.

On the first day he was appointed I asked one of you to compile Brendan an Efe highlights video – I assume we were all busy. God love Efe, he’s a fine man by all accounts, but he’s three years into a slump which is not going to end at Celtic. Brendan must now be aware. It’s no longer Efe’s fault if he costs us again.

I also made the point previewing this game that we can’t expect a squad comprising only one addition to last season’s group to perform remarkably different in qualification than a year ago. In this sense, Celtic performed as expected, this one had all the hallmarks of our recent Icelandic ventures.

The manager may not be embarrassed at the result (I suspect he might sound different privately) but many supporters are. Gibraltar has a population similar to Bellshill, but without the football heritage and support mechanism. Would defeat to Bellshill Athletic be embarrassing? You bet. Yesterday’s result was too.

We are woefully slow in build-up and have only one player in the squad who can create the 7 or 8 chances per game needed to get a result, and he’s 33 next month and currently injured.

We remain strong favourites to qualify for the next round but there is an enormous amount of work to be done in the next month. This is not a Champions League squad.

  1. Sipsini, Very sorry to hear of your accident, we won’t be sharing a pint in Dublin after all. A real pity but important thing is you get better soon. Best of Luck pal.

  2. Who? Wilhelm Bungert – used to be coached by Norman “The Carpet” Elphick. Norman was Arthur Lampkin’s cousin.

I don’t care about dead teams though.

1994 was indeed bad, as was Caley. Too young to remember 71 :-)

They( including Brendan) let us down badly , and should have had enough in the tank to win the game. I appreciate we are not guaranteed to win every or any game

I compare this as the equivalent of getting beat to Juenesse D’esch when we previously played them. Obviously this did not happen. Heads need to roll! Recent Celtic managers, seem to open with a European disaster. Something wrong here in planning.

Need to win 5, 6, 7 or 8 nil just to remove this from our stigma in my opinion, although I will take 2-0 and a CL qualification :-)

    “I know

I don’t care about dead teams though. ”

The point wasn’t directly about the dead team-that is why I gave Celtic examples- it was more about the “worst team in history” tag which has been applied to every Celtic team since MON and Henrik left.

Rangers team at Berwick transferred Forrest (who was a good player) and George McLean (probably past his best)- that was sufficient scapegoats for them, apart from the manager, and they were right in keeping it light.

We knew after ICT that a few like Tebily and Blinker needed to go and Viduka could leave with the attitude he showed. After the LC final of 71, Jock only got rid of Big Tam Gemmell that year and it probably had little to do with the LC final defeat.

We were already a poor squad when we lost to Raith in 94. Good players like John Collins left rather than us getting rid of deadwood.

Scot Symon was a very successful manager at a time when Scottish football had some status.

Davie White didn`t last too long.

50,000 season tickets an increase towards 10,000 new buyers, not a bean spent in the market by the time the first deadline day passes and a dire result in the very first game.

The Celtic fans ‘accepted it’ before they even knew what is was.

What do think is going to happen at Celtic? – more of the same please, or lets splash out on a few £5M upwards men and get them on 20K a week? – oh and BTW Dermot will bankrole the lot of it.

Now that we’ve actuall badly bought ourselves into trouble there is no possibility of buying our way out of it again, speculate to accumulate strategies don’t work in football, especially when the stadium is already sold out.

Brendan Rodgers is just another young manager trying to make a name for himself, he exonorated his players ( the embarrassment remark ) in Gibraltar and took pelters. He even stuck up for Efe Ambrose ( more fool him )

There is no spending plan at Celtic other than try another manager he might be a messiah.
