Shocking result but expected performance

1103

I’m not going to say I saw this coming, I didn’t see defeat, but when I wrote a couple of days ago that you and I have seen a lot more games like Celtic’s away to Lincoln Red Imps than Brendan Rodgers, and about European football in July, I knew this one was never going to play out in a triumphant manner.

On the first day he was appointed I asked one of you to compile Brendan an Efe highlights video – I assume we were all busy. God love Efe, he’s a fine man by all accounts, but he’s three years into a slump which is not going to end at Celtic. Brendan must now be aware. It’s no longer Efe’s fault if he costs us again.

I also made the point previewing this game that we can’t expect a squad comprising only one addition to last season’s group to perform remarkably different in qualification than a year ago. In this sense, Celtic performed as expected, this one had all the hallmarks of our recent Icelandic ventures.

The manager may not be embarrassed at the result (I suspect he might sound different privately) but many supporters are. Gibraltar has a population similar to Bellshill, but without the football heritage and support mechanism. Would defeat to Bellshill Athletic be embarrassing? You bet. Yesterday’s result was too.

We are woefully slow in build-up and have only one player in the squad who can create the 7 or 8 chances per game needed to get a result, and he’s 33 next month and currently injured.

We remain strong favourites to qualify for the next round but there is an enormous amount of work to be done in the next month. This is not a Champions League squad.

    __________________________________________

    Hail Hail ya rebel.

    It’s like this…..

The last time that DD panicked, he brought in Robbie Keane, just as the hapless-BTM was needing a CH.

And, as karma intervened….our League challenge ended in Robbies 1st game for us, a defeat at Rugby Park.

This time, DD has panicked and, brought in the Irish-Tommy Burns.

Tommy Burns(RIP), gave me memories that I will treasure and, take to the grave – when he was a Celtic player.

As a manager, he got the Celtic job too early and, wasn’t a big enough basturt to be the Celtic manager….imho.

There will be those who will say that he wan’t a success because he was cheated.

I would say that, there has never been a Celtic manger who hasent been cheated.

Anyway, Brendan is an idealist who’ll ger his erse felt….imho.

Think about this,….why did no EPL club come in for Brendan ?

    I hope I’m wrong but,…..

Yer REBEL flag will fly high on the ole Jungle roof.

Take care amigo – Hail Hail.

    ……off-oot…..

  4. Some excellent posts since Tuesday’s fiasco by the more experienced supporters

especially one from Setting Free The Bears and Twists and Turns.

Like SFTB, I didn’t fall for the ‘new spend gazillions’ euphoria especially the bit about Dermot Desmond throwing in his own money because Sevco directors upset him at Hampden.

New Manager certainly, but no new signing policy and Celtic remain caught in a transfer no mans land between spending zero and spending just a little bit to get you the Stuart Armstrongs of Tayside, type player.

Good enough to stay just ahead of our biggest rivals Aberdeen and Hearts but every bit as likely to get you beaten by more determined teams in any Cup. I hope Brendan Rodgers knew what he was getting into at Celtic, and even though he was ignored when he hinted that committee’s bought the players at Liverpool the same thing applies at Celtic.

Every Celtic manager has the final say, just like most big clubs, and Ronny Deila and his recommended signings have left Celtic in a mess, along with unfulfilled players who shouldn’t even have been considered for contract extensions.

BR has got to get himself out of it, and that will include backing and selecting the players you dislike or ‘ don’t rate ‘

Big, big job ahead just look at who we haven’t shifted never mind signed.

  5. Ellbhoy,

Thank you for you civilised dialogue. It is indeed a very difficult to give definitive answer. I would agree that if sporting cheating helps an advancement in cancer care then it has been worthwhile. But it is a difficult question.

To a n other who thought I came up with simpleton conclusions ,I suggest he read again, slowly . I make no conclusions and I stated that I draw no comparison between doping and other activities.

What I did do is ask the age old question:- does the end ever justify the means ? Of course no coherent reply was given, just a cheap shot at the questioner . Au revoir.

  6. KEVJUNGLE

He didn’t do anything when we appointed BR, – definitely not publicly before hand.

He was happy with the consensus helped by his silence until the appointment was made. It helped create the

illusion that it was all done by Dermot.

Not quite sure to this day how we pulled off 50K plus, other than Ronny’s departure was such a relief

    the flood gates opened.

  7. Still pouring over the entrails on here, I feel the same as I did on Tuesday night.

We have to let BR sort this out, if he can’t do it then he is finished as a coach in the UK. That should be enough motivation, now let’s see if he can deliver.

There is no quick and cheap way to rid ourselves of the chaff in the squad, however it will have to be done.

Anyway, I am glad to report the lhad has made it back safely to London after having a blast at Bilbao BBK. He lost his phone on day one and we had a 48 hour period before he contacted us via a mates phone. He is raving about Bilbao as a city and says it is such a great venue for food and drink. Will put it on the list.

  11. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    BSR,

Sorry pal, disagree, it’s the same auld pish as usual, the executive of any corporation needs to prepare a risk register. Part of acknowledging risk is setting aside funds to deal with the risk if it becomes a problem. Buying potential is a high risk strategy and acknowledging mistakes must be built in to such a strategy, so having a set aside to discard/reduce the cost of such mistakes is a fundamental component if the strategy is initiated. This executive have failed miserably to take cognisance of such risks and expect the customers to accept and pay for their abject failure without comment.

Listening to the same old excuses telling us year after year, that it’s ok and that we should expect and accept the same mistakes are inevitable, without any contingency to relieve the financial and sporting burden, is simply accepting failure to properly plan and impliment improvement strategies is not possible for the caliber of executive currently employed to populate the senior Plc management. Yet we have “older wiser heads” telling us we should without question accept this failure simply because they can argue only that they can see no alternative, that my friend is down to their own lack of vision and should never be confused with wisdom.

  12. Still sticking to my original thoughts on this season.

The current squad is good enough to make it to the CL group stages.

The issue is coaching, confidence and team composition.

However we seen to be in a situation where everybody apart from 5 or 6 are in the shop window and unfortunately the whole squad knows it.

To get anywhere we need to sort out the MF shape and personnel.

For me NB is finished in a hooped jersey and SB would be better at RB than anywhere near the centre of MF. The spectre of the last league of the season hangs over all this, we had 9 months of stodge and then we had 90 minutes of movement, energy and invention.

BR needs to make things happen sharpish.

Work up a list of the 12 – 15 players he wants to keep.

If required free up the cash to improve their wages if they have 12 months left on their contract — talking specifically about TR and start from there.

If there is to be no net spend this season to improve the squad then we are where we are.

Been had by the Irish Raj reverting to type and PL thinking of his bonus and nothing else.

However that will be for later — a season ticket is not for life it is only for a season.

Interesting to see what players turn up and when and for what money?

However I would like to see a big effort put into the development squad U20’s.

That is the squad available to us and an effort to explain who plays in what position.

Old enough to remember the early 70’s and the QSG coming through.

Now it is all injuries, excuses, unexplained loans and then dumped — CW case in point.

Over 20 and not in the 1st team squad — loans then as a last resort to mature the promising.

LH would be a strange one to try and pigeon hole.

His time out east has been a big help to him and the club.

As in what is the going rate for JMcG — we need him now?

  15. More for my wish list …

    L/town = Academy.

    Training ground = Barrowfield.

U20 stadium = Required ASAP, share with rejuvenated Parkhead Juniors.

Failing that spend some money on Cliftonville.

Regarding both L/town and Barrowfield — Look at Rubb Buildings.

Full sized indoor pitch for both, they have a growing business putting up efficient — aka cheap — training ground football barns.

The lack of these facilities is the physical result of the failures of the past two years.

Krankjar moved from Dinamo Zagreb to Hajduk Split in 2005. The move was hugely controversial. He lasted approximately 12 months at Split before moving to Portsmouth, Spurs, Kiev, QRR and NY Cosmos.

Dino Poprovak, a Croation agent who allegedly handled the transfer to Split was killed (shot) shortly after the transfer.

There an ongoing legal dispute in relation to money from the transfer involving Poprovak’s widow, Moravka and Krankjar’s representatives…
