Shocking result but expected performance

1103

I’m not going to say I saw this coming, I didn’t see defeat, but when I wrote a couple of days ago that you and I have seen a lot more games like Celtic’s away to Lincoln Red Imps than Brendan Rodgers, and about European football in July, I knew this one was never going to play out in a triumphant manner.

On the first day he was appointed I asked one of you to compile Brendan an Efe highlights video – I assume we were all busy. God love Efe, he’s a fine man by all accounts, but he’s three years into a slump which is not going to end at Celtic. Brendan must now be aware. It’s no longer Efe’s fault if he costs us again.

I also made the point previewing this game that we can’t expect a squad comprising only one addition to last season’s group to perform remarkably different in qualification than a year ago. In this sense, Celtic performed as expected, this one had all the hallmarks of our recent Icelandic ventures.

The manager may not be embarrassed at the result (I suspect he might sound different privately) but many supporters are. Gibraltar has a population similar to Bellshill, but without the football heritage and support mechanism. Would defeat to Bellshill Athletic be embarrassing? You bet. Yesterday’s result was too.

We are woefully slow in build-up and have only one player in the squad who can create the 7 or 8 chances per game needed to get a result, and he’s 33 next month and currently injured.

We remain strong favourites to qualify for the next round but there is an enormous amount of work to be done in the next month. This is not a Champions League squad.

  1. Re Europa, Just a wee shout for my own home town team, Cork City who after dumping the Belfast Huns last week earned a very credible and well deserved one all away draw against Swedish side BK Hacken, City were very impressive and led for a good bit of game and only conceded equaliser with 7 minutes left.

St. Patricks Athletic were the team who got away draw in Minsk.

  2. Team A creates six good chances and scores one goal;

Team B creates two good chances and scores two goals.

    Which is the better side?

Has anyone mentioned Lincoln Imps haven’t faced a packed out, Celtic Park yet ?

  4. TET,

I’m with you as regards the young team BUT if it failed the repercussions for BR would be enormous! Balls of galvanised steel needed to carry that one off. I fully expect changes but not wholesale. Paddy Roberts to start and maybe Calum McGregor. I would also like to see Liam Henderson given a starting berth.

  9. Oh well, my daughter got back from Santa Ponza earlier tonight, she wasn’t best pleased that due to slipping in the shower on Monday morning I’ve got a double fracture in my right shoulder.

I didn’t want to tell her and have her worrying whilst on holiday.

So that’s hospitality gubbed on Saturday and Dublin on the 30th, luckily I didn’t pay in advance for the hotel but flights were, so that’s a loss, reckon my daughters boyfriend will shift the tickets for the game.

anyway – someone posted this earlier – very interesting – wondering if there are any republicans on – was it a conscious decision to name the 70’s Falls Road D company after the original 1917 D Company or was there an unbroken line of action/activity between the two ?

I agree, but if he wants to trust the players who have let the club down for the past couple of seasons be it on his head.

  14. So I guess I’m like most on here. Been a Celtic supporter my whole life.

I’ve been raging since Tuesday, but today I had a lazy day off and go to thinking…….

Have we been convicted of breaking financial fair play rules, like Man City?

Have we ever been found guilty of match fixing, like Juve & Milan?

Have we ever bribed referees , like Roma?

Have we ever benefited from Government aid , like Real Madrid or Valencia?

Have we ever cheated by dodging tax and employing players we wouldn’t have otherwise afforded, like RFC (il)?

The moral to this Wee story is every time a Celtic team goes on the park it’s a victory for football , win loose or draw .

Look the evidence, and it’s consistent evidence, is Scottish football is dire, dreadful, poor.

Last season we got gubbed by poor teams, humbled by Legia.

Now how have our other club’s done in recent seasons, go on look, if you must.

Here’s another angle, how many English youth players, League 2 fringe men come up here and triumph ? Too many, of course you can unearth a good ‘un every so often, but not with the regularity, Scottish clubs improve, by taking on board other league’s failures.

I had a look at Red Imps players history pre-match, most have played at a level we regularly face.

Now when you add in passion, which they displayed in abundance, against our faint hearted mercenaries, a reverse was always possible.

On Tuesday the got lucky at both ends of the park. They will hope for the same and hope the pace of our forwards can expose our pedestrian central defence. our two pacey centre backs are bomb scares. So Brendan has a decision to make.

Now, I, you and every Red Imp player will know what CELTIC face on Wednesday. A hostile, (un)support, who will vent after 5 or 10 minutes.

We’ll find out if Brendan is a lucky guy before 8pm on Wednesday.

  18. Tontine,

Of all the clubs he’d have to end up there. More baggage at Ibrox now than United Airlines I guess. Bye the way the father Zlatko Kranjčar is back coaching Dinamo Zagreb.

I think he played against us in 198.4

I found earlier today that he was linked with us in 2006 after the move to Split :)) I wonder why we never went there? Money…Who knows?

If you mean double the amount you give the dug to eat, sometimes, depends on how hungry they are, also when it’s hot like just now they don’t always finish what they are given, so it really is rocket science :-)

It still should not have happened to us. Embarrassing!”

    Of course and agreed.

But embarrassment is quite common it seems.

BTW- worst ever result does not equal worst ever team.

The Hun line up that lost 1:0 at Berwick in 67 was :-

    Martin, Johansen and Provan

    Greig McKinnon and D.Smith

Henderson A. Smith Johnston Forrest and McLean (G) with Davie Wilson coming on as sub.

9 of that team appeared in a ECWC final loss of 1:0 to Bayern six days after we won the big cup.

4 of them played in their ECWC final riot-aided win of 1972.

our 1994 Raith defeat featured Boyd, Nicholas McStay and Collins

our 200 Supercally defeat featured Boyd Moravcik and Viduka (for 45 mins anyway)

our 1971 defeat to the Jags featured 3 Lions and one more from the bench plus Kenny D, Davie H, George C and Lou M.

  22. BMCUW

I can somehow accept it from the English Sun as they would simply see it an opportunity to belittle the big Scottish team and that would appeal to their readers. In Scotland, though , I see the reaction as indicative of the genuine dislike the Establishment has of our Club.

Anyway, early rise tomorrow so goodnight all (and please, could we all refrain from any more of the current criticism of Celtic? More than enough has already been said.).

That sorry debacle in Gibraltar in Tuesday night was the worst sporting result I’ve ever been involved in. Take it from me, I well and truly read the riot act when it was all over. It will never be allowed to happen again.

It was awful…..I shot a bloody 88 on this nice wee golf course on the rock. And in front of my offshore based, tax avoiding, muckers. I daren’t show my face back there after that. Gave myself a right talking to in front of the mirror when I got back to the hotel and nearly smote my moustache in anger.

Big Peter facetimed me after I reached the hotel, I’d forgotten that the celtics were playing. He said we had had a little setback and that Barry Rodgers had a bigger chin than we thought at the interview. I don’t know what he meant by that. Said that Eddie Ambrose sold the jerseys again – I presume that meant we’ve sold record numbers of the black strip with “Ambrose 4” on the back. Pay rise due for young Eddie I think.

Big Peter says that his pal Dudu Dahan has lined up another hot prospect for the celtics, an 18 year old Belgian defender who we are going to sign on deadline day from man city. Fellow by the name of takhin de pisse.

You lot are lucky to have such great custodians.
