Shopping in Brazil

During the game on Saturday we had a conversation (it was that kind of game) about defenders in general, and left backs in particular, available for selection in the CQteN Dream Team (have played since July 2004).  Consensus was that Izaguirre, van Dijk, Ambrose, Matthews and Lustig should feature high on the list.

The real concern was the lack of genuine competition for Emilio Izaguirre’s place over the decade.  We have two excellent right backs, with Darnell Fisher showing lots of promise, but have had little genuine talent on the left.  Mulgrew and McNamara (both used there occasionally), Naylor, Danny Fox, Braafheid, Mo Camara and Ulrik Laursen were at best fillers for the position.

Neil Lennon has talked for over a year about adding a new left back to the squad but I don’t think we’ve come close to signing someone for this position.  The problem is not limited to Celtic, either, lots of clubs at the highest level (budget) have struggled.

I read during the week that Izzie has achieved more assists this season than any since he arrived four years ago.  His form is good, so there is not a compelling need to recruit, but form and fitness are fickle.  He is also one of the few from the squad who will spend the summer in Brazil, interrupting preseason preparations.

Izzie arrived after World Cup 2010, where he put in enough of a shift in two appearances to convince Celtic to move, without shaking the game to its core to the extent he was snapped up by an English or German club.  If the groundwork has been done ahead of this summers’ tournament, I’d be happy to recruit another solid performing left back from a small Latin American country.  I’d not be averse to shopping there for a striker either, instead of Europe, England’s lower tiers, or the Israeli league.

Seville – The Celtic Movement:

“As I recall, I was sitting at the table when I got a shout from some friends to come to the bar where they had engaged in conversation with the owner of the restaurant – Luis – who was originally from Lisbon. At the bar, Luis introduced himself and quickly handed me an official postcard complete with a place for a stamp and a message although this particular card was blank and had never been sent.

The Picture on the card was the Estadio Nacional on the afternoon of 25th May 1967 at the precise moment when Stevie Chalmers turned the ball into the Inter Milan net for the winner. Luis had been in Lisbon that day and he had kept this postcard as a memento of the day and had held it for 15 years as his own wee homage not so much to Celtic as the Celtic fans.”

It usually takes an exceptional post on here to unite the blog.

Sometimes however it can take an exceptionally unfeelingly post to do likewise.

  12. Hillsborough was a dreadful disaster that could have happened at any number of grounds in Britain in the 1980s. This was a time before football had become gentrified and darling of the chattering classes

Leaving the Celtic end at the Jungle corner and the way along Janefield St could be mental as well as dangerous

Leaving the Celtic end at the bigotdome was worse -with ONE exit for everyone including those who had been in the covered enclosure -was scandalous

Liverpool like all big clubs had/have an element that can cause trouble

They had swaggered all over Europe for years stealing and fighting

Their attitude was one that said they were a law unto themselves

Look at the numbers attending the all Mersey Cup Final and Heysel

At Hillsborough there were loads who had no tickets but were determined to get in

The police should have stopped them but didn’t and questions should be asked why they didn’t however the truth is if they hadn’t gone then there would not have been so many in the ground

I’m not blaming them as the police had the prime responsibility to make the event safe but anyone who was there without a ticket needs to ask themselves if they should have stayed away

  13. Evening everybody,

Seeing as the blog has been like a playground for the last few hours, I am going to suggest a book and a DVD. Nothing to do with Celtic but then again that doesn’t matter here. This is not an attempt at a review, just some thoughts. Has anybody else read it?

Nick Cohen’s ‘You can’t read this book’ is a fine read. That does not mean that I approve of all of his arguments of course. He argues that our freedom of speech has been curtailed by Islamic fascists(and their liberal defenders), Britain’s legal system and laws, the power of the bankers and other powerful groups, as well as the internet itself. He disagrees with those who feel the internet can always be a crucial tool in helping to overthrow horrific regimes. He feels that we may actually have no more freedom of speech than we did years ago.

Wikileaks gets a well deserved bashing. Left wingers are condemned for appeasing the lunatics who wish to impose Islamic states worldwide. Cohen castigates the lefties for their racism towards those of a darker skin colour than themselves. Religion gets a good going over as does the child rapist Roman Polanski and his supporters. Even Fred Goodwin gets bashed. Oh, and he mentions the offended brigade.

Recommended, especially if you normally disagree with him.

Plumbridge clergyman Fr Butler, nicknamed ‘The Plum’s Prosperous Priest’, has admitted he can’t go past a shop without buying something shiny or golden but has vowed to say longer masses to make up for his lavish spending.

Parish accountant Jack Spratt reckons Fr Butler, who boasts a fleet of Citroen Dyanes and three Saudi Abrabian crowns, has spent almost £1.2m in the last 15 years, mostly the takings from Sunday collections and tenners given to him at weddings or christenings. Also amongst his possessions is a private plane with a Lithuanian pilot and two chairs made from Indian horses.

Butler admitted he might seek treatment for his monetary addiction:

“It’s a terrible affliction. When I was being handed a fiver or tenner after a funeral all I could think about was going into Omagh and buying something shiny like a chain for around me neck or maybe golden tips for my laces. Then ten pounds would lead to me taking the whole of the weekend’s collections and going out to an auction in Cookstown and buying all manner of second-hand shiny stuff like hefty medallions or golden chalices for the house. I was out of control.”

Concerns were raised about Fr Butler’s spending when a school trip to his house revealed the extent of his shopping habits. Master McGrath, principal of Plumbridge Academy, told us:

“I was dumbstruck. House? More like a 5-star hotel. On entering his abode I noticed all the door knobs were made of solid African gold and hanging from the ceilings were the most extravagant Brazilian chandeliers you’ll ever see. It was like a scene out of Dynasty. What came next was a real eye-opener. Fr Butler was sitting at a golden table, wearing a shiny crown made of sparkling jewels as well as a sparkling cloak and his maid was feeding him Jamaican grapes from a massive glittery silver spoon. All he gave the children was a packet of crisps and a Tip Top mineral with straw.”

The shamed clergyman has vowed to make it up to his flock by saying extra long masses and handing out shorter penances after confessions.

What are the odds on a D.Utd. player getting a straight red card on Saturday, putting him out of the following week’s game?

    ………………………………………

What about all the times our own fans have turned up at big games without tickets? Celtic v Dundee in Centenary year when thousands had to be moved out of Celtic End because of crushing. Celtic v Aberdeen Cup Final in 1967 at Hampden. Celtic v Leeds European Cup semi at Hampden when gates were opened to alleviate crushing OUTSIDE the ground. Supporters always turned up at grounds on spec in the hope of getting a ticket or getting in.

I wasn’t at Seville but there were thousands there without tickets. Very well behaved I know but I honestly think that if anyone thought they had a chance of getting into that game without a ticket they would have taken that chance.
