Shopping in Brazil

740

During the game on Saturday we had a conversation (it was that kind of game) about defenders in general, and left backs in particular, available for selection in the CQteN Dream Team (have played since July 2004).  Consensus was that Izaguirre, van Dijk, Ambrose, Matthews and Lustig should feature high on the list.

The real concern was the lack of genuine competition for Emilio Izaguirre’s place over the decade.  We have two excellent right backs, with Darnell Fisher showing lots of promise, but have had little genuine talent on the left.  Mulgrew and McNamara (both used there occasionally), Naylor, Danny Fox, Braafheid, Mo Camara and Ulrik Laursen were at best fillers for the position.

Neil Lennon has talked for over a year about adding a new left back to the squad but I don’t think we’ve come close to signing someone for this position.  The problem is not limited to Celtic, either, lots of clubs at the highest level (budget) have struggled.

I read during the week that Izzie has achieved more assists this season than any since he arrived four years ago.  His form is good, so there is not a compelling need to recruit, but form and fitness are fickle.  He is also one of the few from the squad who will spend the summer in Brazil, interrupting preseason preparations.

Izzie arrived after World Cup 2010, where he put in enough of a shift in two appearances to convince Celtic to move, without shaking the game to its core to the extent he was snapped up by an English or German club.  If the groundwork has been done ahead of this summers’ tournament, I’d be happy to recruit another solid performing left back from a small Latin American country.  I’d not be averse to shopping there for a striker either, instead of Europe, England’s lower tiers, or the Israeli league.

Seville – The Celtic Movement:

“As I recall, I was sitting at the table when I got a shout from some friends to come to the bar where they had engaged in conversation with the owner of the restaurant – Luis – who was originally from Lisbon. At the bar, Luis introduced himself and quickly handed me an official postcard complete with a place for a stamp and a message although this particular card was blank and had never been sent.

The Picture on the card was the Estadio Nacional on the afternoon of 25th May 1967 at the precise moment when Stevie Chalmers turned the ball into the Inter Milan net for the winner. Luis had been in Lisbon that day and he had kept this postcard as a memento of the day and had held it for 15 years as his own wee homage not so much to Celtic as the Celtic fans.”

    King Lubo

I read your post with some dismay I must confess. You see, it epitomises the reversal of thinking that we have all been unwittingly been party to in recent decades.

Doubtless there will be many posters who take deep and personal exception to the idea you articulated: That the cause of the death of 96 men, women and children at Hillsborough was caused by the actions of some large number of drunk, aggressive and otherwise utterly reckless football fans.

It was the dominant narrative of the time, conceived and executed by cowardly people at every level in the Police and embraced and disseminated by a Government of the day who could smell the political impact of ostracising an errant (to their mind) city.

It nearly worked, but for the tenacity of the bewildered, grief stricken families and those who supported them, who recognised the singularity of the incongruity being pedalled: It was all made up. It was a lie.

The reversal of thinking that I referred to earlier is this: That formerly, the role of the Police was to serve its Community.

Now, the behaviour of the Police is increasingly self serving, and we didn’t notice it happening. That’s what your post represents to me.

It is now quite clear that the role of the Police in the aftermath of the Hillsborough tragedy was focussed not upon due process – as they are mandated to uphold – but upon the (by then) developing axiom that the reputation of the Police, the body corporate, had primacy, more important to the Police even than human life itself.

This view is maintained by serving and retired officers despite the role of the Police as a collective unit on that day being widely considered as being causative in creating the tragedy in the first place.

We see now that this was not an isolated case. Today, the Police in the UK will not tolerate a dissenting voice from within, or increasingly, without. The Police more and more resemble a Corporation, bent upon increasing its influence and decreasing its accountability.

We can cite umpteen examples, from the Stephen Lawrence abhorrence to the absurd strategies that created the societal affront represented by the Mark Kennedy case and so many other examples of a growing corporation unable to separate its ambition from its purposes. Even today the rank and file hang onto the discredited threads of the Hillsborough lie.

Here in Scotland we have seen a reorganisation of the Police service to the national level such that it is now largely removed from the oversight of the local authorities who created it and who ostensibly govern it. It has outgrown its local environment, just like the ‘corporation’ that it increasingly apes.

And thus have we unwittingly witnessed the transition of community service into corporate influence, and with it we can see that the Police has lost the uniquely human ability to state the obvious, the necessary, the humane:

    “We were wrong.”

Such a concession to plain truth it seems simply cannot be permitted, will not be tolerated, and now seems quite anathema to the Corporate culture of the Police. Good men and women, honest people – folk who held good values and who joined the Police primarily to uphold its social contract with the community – cannot rationalise or accept a contrary view, let alone one that requires them to recognise the fact and thereafter act upon the human impulse to say:

“Sorry. We were wrong. That should never have happened on our watch.”

In maintaining the invalid and discredited idea expressed in your post, you deny your own judgement, your own human experience. You have placed the Corporation before the Community.

You needn’t. You know that, don’t you? You can hold a different opinion, assert an alternative point of view. It’s allowed. Still.

You ought to try it sometime.
