Shopping in Brazil

740

During the game on Saturday we had a conversation (it was that kind of game) about defenders in general, and left backs in particular, available for selection in the CQteN Dream Team (have played since July 2004).  Consensus was that Izaguirre, van Dijk, Ambrose, Matthews and Lustig should feature high on the list.

The real concern was the lack of genuine competition for Emilio Izaguirre’s place over the decade.  We have two excellent right backs, with Darnell Fisher showing lots of promise, but have had little genuine talent on the left.  Mulgrew and McNamara (both used there occasionally), Naylor, Danny Fox, Braafheid, Mo Camara and Ulrik Laursen were at best fillers for the position.

Neil Lennon has talked for over a year about adding a new left back to the squad but I don’t think we’ve come close to signing someone for this position.  The problem is not limited to Celtic, either, lots of clubs at the highest level (budget) have struggled.

I read during the week that Izzie has achieved more assists this season than any since he arrived four years ago.  His form is good, so there is not a compelling need to recruit, but form and fitness are fickle.  He is also one of the few from the squad who will spend the summer in Brazil, interrupting preseason preparations.

Izzie arrived after World Cup 2010, where he put in enough of a shift in two appearances to convince Celtic to move, without shaking the game to its core to the extent he was snapped up by an English or German club.  If the groundwork has been done ahead of this summers’ tournament, I’d be happy to recruit another solid performing left back from a small Latin American country.  I’d not be averse to shopping there for a striker either, instead of Europe, England’s lower tiers, or the Israeli league.

Seville – The Celtic Movement:

“As I recall, I was sitting at the table when I got a shout from some friends to come to the bar where they had engaged in conversation with the owner of the restaurant – Luis – who was originally from Lisbon. At the bar, Luis introduced himself and quickly handed me an official postcard complete with a place for a stamp and a message although this particular card was blank and had never been sent.

The Picture on the card was the Estadio Nacional on the afternoon of 25th May 1967 at the precise moment when Stevie Chalmers turned the ball into the Inter Milan net for the winner. Luis had been in Lisbon that day and he had kept this postcard as a memento of the day and had held it for 15 years as his own wee homage not so much to Celtic as the Celtic fans.”

    Evening everybody,

Nick Cohen’s ‘You can’t read this book’ is a fine read. That does not mean that I approve of all of his arguments of course. He argues that our freedom of speech has been curtailed by Islamic fascists(and their liberal defenders), Britain’s legal system and laws, the power of the bankers and other powerful groups, as well as the internet itself.

Wikileaks gets a well deserved bashing. Left wingers are condemned for appeasing the lunatics who wish to impose Islamic states worldwide.

“Worldwide Islamic States” I almost Shat myself laughing at that one.

All this proves is that Islamophobia is totally acceptable in the 21st Century western world.

    http://cairney2.wordpress.com/2014/02/12/285/

for a bit of nostalgia. It is the History of Scottish Football by Jim Craig.

It is the decade when I suspect a few CQNers first started watching football. My dad had taken me to Celtic as a wean but 1958 was when I first really got interested in going to games with my pals.

One was a Clyde supporter and I remember going to the Scottish Cup final Clyde v Hibs. Johnny Coyle scored the only goal of the game but I remember Joe Baker punching in a cross that was rightly ruled out. Clyde had some useful players in those days.

The period 1958 to 65 was a bleak one for Celtic and that will probably come out in the decade on the sixties. No league titles and cup final or semi final defeats to Rangers, St Mirren and Dunfermline, misery until Big Billy ended it all in 65.

Anyway a site worth paying a visit to.

I just made the mistake of reading one of tsd’s post’s. FFS, what an error that was. He’s berating The Exiled Tim for trying to make a living from selling his wares and in the process help some of those less fortunate.

I’ve met exiled tim on more than a few occasions and he’s one I regard as a friend. I’d never have met him if not for this blog, a cracking guy, a Tim, a guy with his heart in the right place.

I sincerely hope I never have the misfortune to meet you tsd, you come across as a spiteful, nasty prick of a man who’s only purpose in life is to destabilise this blog.

You’re probably not aware of TET’s contribution to CQ10, his “Bespoke Tacky Dug-Collars An’ Bangles” as you call them raised money at the event towards P67’s chosen charity and continues to help some of the poorest people on the planet.

What did you do, you arrogant pretentious twat? Probably nothing.

I might make the same mistake in another year or so but I really hope I don’t.

  15. Morning, a few years ago I was down in Liverpool for the Celtic UEFA cup tie. Was in a pub nearby just at Anfield, full of Liverpool fans was maybe twenty mins before kick off, me and my mate in for a quick beer. As we were standing at the bar the song goes up, Who’s that lying on the run way….. the Munich disaster song. Disgusted me and D kinda booed it, to be shouted at etc.

We walked out the pub and a starts on me, I told him your out of order and with what your club has been through, Heysel and Hillsborough, he said watch it mate, my cousin died at Hillsborough… I looked at him, shook my head and I think the penny dropped.. we walked out unscathed.

Football is a funny old game, we go to watch our teams and don’t think twice about returning home safely, sometimes we engage our mouths without thinking. Hillsborough was the greatest tragedy in football in my opinion, so avoidable but to blame supporters desperate to watch their team and going along with the flow of the crowd and direction of authorities is a slate on the dead…..

How some can sing of such and deny justice for such is beyond me, hopefully closure will bring some peace.

    It’s a fine tribute.

It has been a very emotional few days. There was family from all over the world and I met cousins, nieces, nephews and old family friends I hadn’t seen for years and some I was meeting for the first time.

Saturday was very special as it turned into a real celebration of Gerry’s life. A lot of tears were shed, but there was also laughter and joy as old stories were told and retold.

At the requiem mass, the priest announced that “Gerry’s brother Tom had written a moving tribute to his brother in Celtic Quick News”.

That was a nice surprise. Turns out a CQNer had emailed the link to him. I won’t name him without his permission, but you know who you are. Much appreciated my friend.

  23. I agree with your points about westerners being programmed to hate people of color (especially Muslims) and that the elite use divide and conquer tactics to keep the population under control. But 1 thing I must tell you that you probably won’t understand (or maybe even never heard of) is that we the Muslims are the victims of European colonizers, before we can unite among ourselves (among Muslims) we have to fight off the foreign invaders coming to steal our wealth and rule us with an iron fist. When we have successfully fought off the western troops(our own people who fight for western hegemony) and removed the western handpicked puppet leaders( like Bashar Assad etc.) then we can start to defend our homeland against the Europeans again. Because you better believe that the Americans, Europeans, Australians, Canadians, (all powerful European nations) will come after you if you decide to be self determined. We can expect embargoes(like Cuba), European invasion (like Mali) and we can expect many people to die in a bloody war. All of this is because of colonization, you might not know this but the Europeans never “gave back” our lands, that’s just dust in many people’s eyes. Only the truly gullible in the Middle East, Africa and other conquered places believe that they’re “free from European rule.” I could explain this to you very easily but it’s nighttime and I’m kind of tired right now. To give you a simple example, watch the movie Ché about the living legend Ché Guevara. In the movie (or documentaries) you will see that the Europeans never actually fight the conquered people (Cubans). The Europeans use their own people against the guerrillas, that’s how Europeans have ruled people of color for decades. They don’t have to physically come over here and fight to suppress us, they just pay off and blackmail our own people to do it. Look at any conquered country in the world, they’ve all been victim to white supremacy and imperialism. And they all claim to be “free” and “sovereign” but that’s just on the surface. That’s how good the Europeans have planned it, these devilish people are masterminds. For example, I live in Belgium (the country that killed 15.000.000 Congolese for rubber), this country has NO NATURAL RESOURCES! Yet Belgium is “richer” than most countries in Africa. On the surface (for an idiot) you might think, hmmm “they’re just good businessmen” but you would be wrong. The only logical explanation is that Belgium is a thieving, murderous rogue state that has gotten rich off of Africans by way of genocide and slavery. The Belgians got super rich after they stole all the rubber from the Congo but then they became insanely rich when they started to steal diamonds, gold and other precious metals from Africans. This is how Belgium (a country that has no natural resources) became rich and powerful. If we lived in a fair world, Congo would be the powerful and rich country but we don’t live in a fair world. So in conclusion, all of us (in Africa, Middle East and abroad) have been robbed, our countries have been raped and our people have been left with two choices, to either die of hunger (while under the rule of a puppet regime) or to go somewhere to find work. The Europeans left us nothing, we had to do something to survive! Then The Europeans themselves came about 50 years ago to our country and picked out good strong men to come and work in the mines and other places of unbelievably hard work. The Europeans themselves didn’t want to work in some places anymore (like coal mines). So the government went to their client states and recruited some slaves to come and work for 1 cent. Years later, here I am and we have risen above their attempt to humiliate us. We have our own houses, cars and we own many properties in our own countries back home. And what do we hear every single time from Europeans (who brought us here)? GO HOME YOU MONKEY! YOU DON’T BELONG HERE! We’re being demonized by the very same people that robbed and sucked our lands dry, so now we are “the criminals” and they are the angels of light. This is why the Muslims cannot and why we will not “unite” with our sworn enemies. We would have to have our land, wealth and sovereignty back and that will never happen unless there is a war. And this day will come my friend, the bloodiest and longest war we have ever seen will be between the former colonies of white people and the white Europeans themselves. There is no escaping it.

  24. The following is from a conversation I had earlier today with a decent Muslim.

How did we ever become so evil?
