Shopping in Brazil

740

During the game on Saturday we had a conversation (it was that kind of game) about defenders in general, and left backs in particular, available for selection in the CQteN Dream Team (have played since July 2004).  Consensus was that Izaguirre, van Dijk, Ambrose, Matthews and Lustig should feature high on the list.

The real concern was the lack of genuine competition for Emilio Izaguirre’s place over the decade.  We have two excellent right backs, with Darnell Fisher showing lots of promise, but have had little genuine talent on the left.  Mulgrew and McNamara (both used there occasionally), Naylor, Danny Fox, Braafheid, Mo Camara and Ulrik Laursen were at best fillers for the position.

Neil Lennon has talked for over a year about adding a new left back to the squad but I don’t think we’ve come close to signing someone for this position.  The problem is not limited to Celtic, either, lots of clubs at the highest level (budget) have struggled.

I read during the week that Izzie has achieved more assists this season than any since he arrived four years ago.  His form is good, so there is not a compelling need to recruit, but form and fitness are fickle.  He is also one of the few from the squad who will spend the summer in Brazil, interrupting preseason preparations.

Izzie arrived after World Cup 2010, where he put in enough of a shift in two appearances to convince Celtic to move, without shaking the game to its core to the extent he was snapped up by an English or German club.  If the groundwork has been done ahead of this summers’ tournament, I’d be happy to recruit another solid performing left back from a small Latin American country.  I’d not be averse to shopping there for a striker either, instead of Europe, England’s lower tiers, or the Israeli league.

Seville – The Celtic Movement:

“As I recall, I was sitting at the table when I got a shout from some friends to come to the bar where they had engaged in conversation with the owner of the restaurant – Luis – who was originally from Lisbon. At the bar, Luis introduced himself and quickly handed me an official postcard complete with a place for a stamp and a message although this particular card was blank and had never been sent.

The Picture on the card was the Estadio Nacional on the afternoon of 25th May 1967 at the precise moment when Stevie Chalmers turned the ball into the Inter Milan net for the winner. Luis had been in Lisbon that day and he had kept this postcard as a memento of the day and had held it for 15 years as his own wee homage not so much to Celtic as the Celtic fans.”

  4. No matter what PL said, their destiny is in there own hands, I see it as him being cool, and leaving it up to thems what road they go down, some in here are like Huns and despise PL, and that is to his advantage, I’m not saying all in here do, just some, PL is a very, very, clever man, and thank god he is one of us and leading us, he has been outstanding for CFC, and as far as I’m concerned, our second best signing The KOK being first, and that’s my opinion, lurking Huns GIRUYs.

As was recently quite rightly pointed out , this is Celtic Quick News, a forum to discuss news and opinions related to Celtic FC, the Celtic family, and issues that directly affect us through the football world at large.

So why oh why do some of you think this a suitable forum for you to expound your sometimes extreme political propaganda? I am not interested, totally bored by it and feel that the intellectual level of CQN is being dragged down to a gutter level by the content and the personal attacks it engenders.

And I’m pretty certain that many, many other posters and lurkers feel exactly the same. This is a single thread forum so we have to wade through the garbage to get to the real purpose of why this normally excellent forum was established. And it should not be a matter of ‘skip on by then’.

So why don’ t those of you, and we all know who you are, who feel they must inflict their dubious opinions (and they are only opinions) on the disinterested, please find another forum to do so and let the rest of us get back to why we are posting here in the first place.

I echo your frustration with those who hijack CQN for their own political ends but I am afraid it has been this way for a fair number of years sadly. Oh that they would heed your advice and find an alternative forum for their non Celtic related interests.

I think the typos gave it away.

Still…..all home cup games included….C’mon Pedro, you know it makes sense. :)

  12. CELTIC have joined the clubs showing an interest in Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

The 28-year-old is out of contract in the summer and while the Parkhead club may not be able to compete financially with rival suitors FC Basle, Schalke and Sevilla, they could offer the prospect of regular European football.

Any move for Fabianski would raise question marks over the future of England international Fraser Forster. (Daily Mail 01/04/14).

There’s nothing wrong with a wee smattering of politics on a footy blog imo.

I’m in partial agreement with you. Having to scroll pass endless posts paricularly about the impending referendum is tiresome and boring.

However, having said that, over the years I’ve learned a great deal about a wide variety of topics because I’ve read them on here first. Frequently I won’t take the post as Gospel but it will encourage me to carry out some further research of my own.

Sadly though there is now a concerted campaign by a couple of posters to bring this issue to the fore at every opportunity. It’s my belief that they have an agenda and it most certainly doesn’t have Celtic as its priority!

Best post I’ve read here in many a day. Salute!

  18. I believe we’ve all known from January that Fraser Forster would be heading South come summertime.

I really would’ve loved to have seen David Marshall come back to the club as his replacement but I fear he may be out of our price range unless the club are willing to sacrifice a profit on FF to bring a former starlet & home grown talent back to the club to see out the remainder of his career.

Would Fabianski be willing to sacrifice around 20k a week to come up to Scotland where he would have a chance to try his hand in the Champions League?

Depends on how well the club has been sold to him by the Holy Goalie & Lukasz Zaluska.

If Zaluska’s reluctance to leave the club is anything to go by, then I feel there will be a very strong chance that he may well be lining out for the Hoops next year. Add in the fact that has family will be settled in the UK & it seems a no brainer.
