During the game on Saturday we had a conversation (it was that kind of game) about defenders in general, and left backs in particular, available for selection in the CQteN Dream Team (have played since July 2004). Consensus was that Izaguirre, van Dijk, Ambrose, Matthews and Lustig should feature high on the list.
The real concern was the lack of genuine competition for Emilio Izaguirre’s place over the decade. We have two excellent right backs, with Darnell Fisher showing lots of promise, but have had little genuine talent on the left. Mulgrew and McNamara (both used there occasionally), Naylor, Danny Fox, Braafheid, Mo Camara and Ulrik Laursen were at best fillers for the position.
Neil Lennon has talked for over a year about adding a new left back to the squad but I don’t think we’ve come close to signing someone for this position. The problem is not limited to Celtic, either, lots of clubs at the highest level (budget) have struggled.
I read during the week that Izzie has achieved more assists this season than any since he arrived four years ago. His form is good, so there is not a compelling need to recruit, but form and fitness are fickle. He is also one of the few from the squad who will spend the summer in Brazil, interrupting preseason preparations.
Izzie arrived after World Cup 2010, where he put in enough of a shift in two appearances to convince Celtic to move, without shaking the game to its core to the extent he was snapped up by an English or German club. If the groundwork has been done ahead of this summers’ tournament, I’d be happy to recruit another solid performing left back from a small Latin American country. I’d not be averse to shopping there for a striker either, instead of Europe, England’s lower tiers, or the Israeli league.
Seville – The Celtic Movement:
“As I recall, I was sitting at the table when I got a shout from some friends to come to the bar where they had engaged in conversation with the owner of the restaurant – Luis – who was originally from Lisbon. At the bar, Luis introduced himself and quickly handed me an official postcard complete with a place for a stamp and a message although this particular card was blank and had never been sent.
The Picture on the card was the Estadio Nacional on the afternoon of 25th May 1967 at the precise moment when Stevie Chalmers turned the ball into the Inter Milan net for the winner. Luis had been in Lisbon that day and he had kept this postcard as a memento of the day and had held it for 15 years as his own wee homage not so much to Celtic as the Celtic fans.”

How can a two year old club have a Hall Of Fame? Does it include the historic fourth tier winners, the majestic third tier winners and …. er … that’s it.
The club has had more CEOs that trophy wins.

I notice there is to be another inquiry re Hillsborough lasting about a year and giving squillions to the hard pressed legal teams.
Maybe I am a lonely voice here and expecting serious pelters but, has anyone asked the question, who or what caused this in the first place. yeah the services covered up big time but surely common sense suggests that the thousands of Liverpool fans who had arrived without tickets, and then began to seriously push towards the turnstyles, are they not at least partly to blame? Had they not been pushing, then the events which horrified us all would not have happened, yeah? So it’s all the fault of the police is it?
We all know of the cover up’s and all that, but just what caused the crush in the first place? The Police? Don’t think so, do you?

Kinglubo,
Seems you’ve no been paying attention to whats already been proven, the crowd control forced the support into the already overcrowded areas.
The new investigation is to review all the information and take the investigation out of the control of secret societies and also investigate their role in the corruption of the truth, a truth that has been revealed in spite of their influence but then if you’ve missed that much, I doubt any further findings would be of interest to you after all they were only football supporters eh.
Just in tonight and outta here already……….
Got a feeling this place will kick off soon …
I hope the families of the 96 receive justice and peace in the inquests of their lost loved ones

Theres been a few documentrys on this with the police taking the bulk ,if not all of the blame.
They let fans into sections that were jam-packed full while other sections had plenty room.
Plus the fact that they refused to open gates onto the pitch to relieve the pressure.
The only reason there is another expensive inquest is because of the police cover-up.
Liverpool fans want and deserve justice and the closure that will come with it.
Now that Wanyama has drifted away…..is recruitment from the African countries to be given a miss

Take you point! You did not answer the question however.
Don’t get me wrong, it was tragic what happened, no doubt of that. But what please was the source of the events that took place that awful day. Was it all caused by the police and ambulance services? All I’m saying here is that the Liverpool fans are not without blame, end of.
No doubt you’ll all be calling me a hun etc etc , no probs. I can deal with that.

Kinglubo,
Seems to me your simply on to stir up bad feeling, the police lied, when they said the supporters mobbed the gates, it seems only you missed the point and are looking to blame the scousers, whats your problem with scousers ?
Kinglubo 18.59
From where did you glean your information that thousands of
Liverpool fans arrived without tickets ?
May I ask if you went to any football match prior to the Taylor
report ?
The authorities, have a duty of care to protect the paying public
at sporting events, not only was this neglected, the neglect was
covered up and blame apportioned to innocent fans.
96 people including children died that day.
Your post gives me the boke.

If it was anything like Celtic at Nottingham and it has always looked to me as if it was very similar then you could be wrong. At Nottingham, we walked past a line of about 12 pcs and WPCs standing chatting to one another, each with their hands clasped behind their backs. We walked into the stadium (gates open) without surrendering tickets. We then headed to the first archway to get onto the terracing (no police, no stewards to advise us that there were archways a little further along that weren’t so crowded). Result, fans scrambling up the floodlights to escape the crush, fans with both feet off the ground but body positioned diagonally, steel railings preventing us from escaping onto the trackside to ease congestion with the only gate locked and no nearby police, steward or official with a key. It was absolutely terrifying and I thought that I might not see my wife or 10 month old daughter again. It took the Celtic fans to repeatedly chant, “We are overcrowded” before we got any reaction. Eventually a policeman arrived with a key to open the gate in the fence and at last the crushing was eased.
With regard to Hillsborough, the police, the media and an MP told so many lies to blacken the supporters and exonerate themselves from blame that I would ask you how you know, for definite, that there were thousands of Liverpool fans without tickets who caused the crush. Maybe these thousands of fans without tickets were a police/ media invention.
Oh, one more thing, if you are expecting pelters why post nonsense about such a tragic disaster? You obviously know that your’s is a minority view on the matter.

There is no evidence ticketless fans were there in any number, that myth was created by the police to apportion blame to the Liverpool support.
The turnstyles in question were also a known bottleneck area and it has been widely accepted that completely inadequate police presence outside the ground allowed a dangerous build up of people attempting to legitimately gain entry to the ground.

You ask a question as to what was “the events ” that day.
If you do not know then how can you jump to the conclusion “the Liverpool fans are not without blame”?
I take it “end of” means you are putting forward your opinion based on no knowledge of the facts.
That usually ends any further argument from me.

Did you not see the documentary on television last year showing proof that the police held a meeting on Hillsborough during the week after the matter making sure that everyone was on message that the Liverpool fans caused the disaster and they had to create evidence to show that this was the case? The statements of hundreds of fans were altered with extra information added to endorse the police’s position on what took place.
I hate to say this, I have always regarded you as a good contributor on here but your post on this matter is possibly the worst or one of the worst posts I have ever read on CQN.

Kinglubo,
Hillsborough was completely unsuitable for FA Cup semi-finals. The stadium could not handle the crowds at such games, there had been numerous serious crushes at semi-finals at Hillsborough in the years prior to 1989, including in the 1988 semi-final also between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. In actual fact the stadium had no valid safety certificate after 1981.
So much so in fact that Liverpool FC officially protested against Hillsborough being chosen as a semi-final in 1989. These protests of course were ignored by the powers that be including the FA and the Minister for Sport who were fully aware of previous crushes at Hillsborough.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillsborough_disaster
Fans were absolutely not to blame for Hillsborough. Dreadful mistakes were made by the authorities – by the FA and the Minister for Sport in allowing a semi-final to be played in that stadium given the history of crushes inside the ground, by the local council in doing nothing about the lack of a safety certificate, and by the police in their handling of events that day.
These mistakes were compounded by the disgraceful cover-ups perpetrated by politicians and senior policemen throughout the years that followed. While the family and friends of those who perished on that awful day suffered unimaginable anguish.

Evening All
Check this belter out
An absent-minded Dungannon bookmaker lost an estimated £30’000 after forgetting to put his clock forward this morning. Toan’s admitted they were caught out badly but have vowed to make up for it by laying on bets for anything going including two men running up a road.
Punters in the town were made aware of the error after early riser and chronic gambler Kieran McGahey put a bet on a race in Australia having realised Toan’s clocks were all wrong. In addition to this, due to essential maintenance work all TVs were down. Already knowing the result, he claimed a 1-2-3 forecast and pocketed himself £250 in the process. Before long, the premises were heaving with hopeful punters. Mary Corr (71) explained:
“I hadn’t set foot in a bookies in my life. I went straight from Mass to Toan’s when I got the text from one of the altar boys during the Homily to say the bookies were on the wrong time. There must’ve been 200 people squeezed into Toan’s, all putting money on Shakalakaboomboom to win the 12:30 in Melbourne, even though it was already 1:30. I can’t believe Toan himself didn’t cop on. I think he was still stocious from the Abba Tribute concert the night before.”
The penny finally dropped with Toan after 450 people phoned in to bet on an unknown footballer named Dale Carrick to score the first goal in the Hearts v Hibs Scottish league game.
“I should have known. When I saw Mary Corr in her best frock and feathered hat in the shop scribbling away on a docket I should have copped on. Even the priest himself phoned in about Dale Carrick scoring first, which he did after a few minutes of the game. I had to pay him £4000. Those bloody clocks. I still had Mamma Mia ringing around my head this morning to think straight.”
Toan has promised to recoup the money by setting up a series of bets on things like the colour of the next car to pass the shop or the woman with the biggest feet on Scotch Street etc.
