Shopping in Brazil

During the game on Saturday we had a conversation (it was that kind of game) about defenders in general, and left backs in particular, available for selection in the CQteN Dream Team (have played since July 2004).  Consensus was that Izaguirre, van Dijk, Ambrose, Matthews and Lustig should feature high on the list.

The real concern was the lack of genuine competition for Emilio Izaguirre’s place over the decade.  We have two excellent right backs, with Darnell Fisher showing lots of promise, but have had little genuine talent on the left.  Mulgrew and McNamara (both used there occasionally), Naylor, Danny Fox, Braafheid, Mo Camara and Ulrik Laursen were at best fillers for the position.

Neil Lennon has talked for over a year about adding a new left back to the squad but I don’t think we’ve come close to signing someone for this position.  The problem is not limited to Celtic, either, lots of clubs at the highest level (budget) have struggled.

I read during the week that Izzie has achieved more assists this season than any since he arrived four years ago.  His form is good, so there is not a compelling need to recruit, but form and fitness are fickle.  He is also one of the few from the squad who will spend the summer in Brazil, interrupting preseason preparations.

Izzie arrived after World Cup 2010, where he put in enough of a shift in two appearances to convince Celtic to move, without shaking the game to its core to the extent he was snapped up by an English or German club.  If the groundwork has been done ahead of this summers’ tournament, I’d be happy to recruit another solid performing left back from a small Latin American country.  I’d not be averse to shopping there for a striker either, instead of Europe, England’s lower tiers, or the Israeli league.

Seville – The Celtic Movement:

“As I recall, I was sitting at the table when I got a shout from some friends to come to the bar where they had engaged in conversation with the owner of the restaurant – Luis – who was originally from Lisbon. At the bar, Luis introduced himself and quickly handed me an official postcard complete with a place for a stamp and a message although this particular card was blank and had never been sent.

The Picture on the card was the Estadio Nacional on the afternoon of 25th May 1967 at the precise moment when Stevie Chalmers turned the ball into the Inter Milan net for the winner. Luis had been in Lisbon that day and he had kept this postcard as a memento of the day and had held it for 15 years as his own wee homage not so much to Celtic as the Celtic fans.”

    Separation shuts shipyards

A short and rather understated story in today’s Independent On Sunday blows that story, if you’ll forgive the metaphor, right out of the water.

“The biggest ever warships built to protect British interests will be completed in Scotland even if there is a Yes vote for independence, in another blow to the “Better together” campaign.

Ministry of Defence officials and industry leaders have previously warned that thousands of defence jobs would be lost in Scotland post-secession, as work related to national security would have to be kept within redrawn national borders.

However, a senior naval source said that the carriers have “got to be finished” at Rosyth, ensuring 2,000 jobs for years to come.”

Not only is that good news for the workers in Rosyth, but as it also annihilates the argument that “the UK would never build complex warships in a foreign country”, it also shatters the threat that the same rule would apply to the commissioning of the Type 26 destroyers at BAE Systems in Govan.

(Which was in any event realistically the only place they COULD have been built.)

But the most telling thing about the story was the reaction from Alistair Carmichael. This site has referred to the ostensible Scottish Secretary by the title of this post’s headline ever since the UK government began scaremongering about the future of the Clyde yards, but never have Mr Carmichael’s allegiances been displayed more nakedly.

“Alistair Carmichael, the Secretary of State for Scotland, said that he would check the terms of the aircraft carrier contracts. He added: ‘That work will not last for ever. When that’s finished, what will they [Rosyth dockyards] do then?’”

We’ll leave aside the fact that there are no plans for military contracts for Rosyth after the carriers even if Scotland stays in the UK. The main item of concern here is that the Secretary of State for Scotland, supposedly Scotland’s man in Westminster, is openly and publicly looking for loopholes in contracts which would enable him to put thousands of Scots out of work.

We can think of no better illustration of the ideology of the Union.

  2. For the life of me I cannae understand posters on here having general disdain for any Celtic employee whether that be players, staff and board members and still following the club, I couldn’t. As the late TB said “Celtic are a cause”. And as the song says “we don’t care if we win, lose or draw”.

In 1968 I left these fair lands and emigrated, I had a wife and baby daughter at the time, Mrs TT arrived about 10 weeks after me and was with child practically right away.

She had a poor pregnancy and the oul Doctor, a crusty ould Scot, said that baby won’t survive the full term. That baby is now teaching down in Nova Scotia. BTW the crusty ould Scot had an “apprentice” fae hame working with him, on his return hame he became the Celtic team doctor.

Anyways I stuck Mrs. TT and baby daughter on a plane hame; I was struggling for money so games were out for me. I eventually landed a good job and we started saving for a house.

I had seen Celtic play twice, both at Hampden in the League Cup, before I first attended Celtic Park again. So about 8 weeks after returning I was headed for CP. I couldnae contain myself and struggled tae sleep the night before.

On the train journey on the way up a bunch of Tims got on at Yoker Station and sung a song tae the tune of “Ob La Di, Ob La da, walking along London Road fae Brigton Station was magic, alas we lost 0-2 tae a very good jambo side, but that didn’t upset me too much, I was just glad to be there. That night my da asked me if I was disappointed, “naw no really, just happy to be there. 4 days later I was back tae witness a Tommy Gemmell wonder goal against Benfica.

Oh aye and 6 months later I was in Milan paid for by Mrs TT’s maternity allowance.

Rolling the clock forward and 6 years later I’m back in the colonies. 2nd Christmas there we go hame for a holiday. Now a lot of emigrants will tell you that on landing on Scottish soil a feeling comes over them at being hame, no me, don’t know why but no me.

Anyway Boxing Day arrives and I’m standing in the Jungle for an excellent 2-2 tie against the sheep, it was then I got that feeling of being hame.

I would ask anybody on the site with the authority to remove offensive material to DELETE the sad references to Michael Mols wife.

Has this great blog descended to the level of mocking the appearance of competely innocent women, for the simple reason that she is not some dumb photogenic fashion accessory.

I made a joke about the mans wife & i’m not gonna apologize for it, as it was just that A JOKE.

  7. As part of an anti-sectarian educational initiative, my sister-in-law (who is a primary school teacher in a non-denominational school) had to take her class for a visit to Ibrox last week. As part of the visit they were given a tour of the stadium, during which the tour guide came out with the following nuggets:

    1. “Ibrox is classified by a FIFA as a 5-star stadium, while our rivals in the east end of the city have a 2-star stadium.”

    2. “Here is the telephone system used for communication between the dug-out and Directors Box. Across the city, during the long periods when ‘Lennon’ is suspended Celtic have no need for such a system – their crowds are so small nowadays that ‘Lennon’ simply speaks from the Director’s Box to dug-out without the need for a phone.”

    3. “Here is the plaque awarded to Rangers by Celtic on the occasion of our centenary. Can you imagine that happening nowadays, what with ‘Lennon’ in charge over there? No neither can I.”

    Class.

  8. ..anybody any idea when the post-split fixtures will be released?

Guess it’s too much like common sense for the SPL to suss out that the top/bottom six have been determined for awhile now and an early release of the dates would help travelling fans, especially over the Easter holiday period.

See common sense – not so common is it?

  12. Whilst thinking of a replacement for Izzie a young boy at Cardiff right now comes to mind and we have shopped there in the past.

Declan John is the young lad and I have watched him a few times and been impressed.

He is now a Wales international so might be out of our range but when they go down he may not want to play championship football.

On another note having watched Kayal recently I honestly think he is done.

All energy but seems to have lost any composure he may have had and I think his time may be up at Celtic.

Hope not but just my opinion.

  16. Johnny Clash,

That sounds utterly despicable. I would think the people who organise that anti-sectarian programme for schools would not be too happy about such inflammatory, indeed defamatory, remarks being made to such an impressionable audience. It defeats the whole purpose of such schemes; in fact, acts directly against the very spirit.

I know someone who works in a non denominational school and a local businessman donated a guided tour of Celtic Park, as a pupil prize.

One of the ‘teachers’ wasn’t convinced that the prize was ‘appropriate’?
