SPFL bet on China

787

Interesting development reported this morning by the BBC that the SPFL have sold rights to a Chinese broadcaster for around £500k per year.  With rights for major European leagues commanding premium fees, it seems intuitive that there’s space for lower-cost content, but Scottish football must be starting from a position of practically zero market knowledge in China.  Unless Zheng Zhi is a whole lot more popular than I realised.

The other aspect about China to bear in mind is the size and habits of its gambling market.  If you are a gambler, you don’t watch football for the thrill of following your favourite team, you watch for the opportunity to beat the bookie, and in this respect, Scottish football is as valuable as any league.

Sport’s relationship with gambling has been a source of concern, especially in the Scottish lower leagues, but when you look up your fixture list and see the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership, there’s no point getting precious about the influence Chinese gamblers.

I see the Bumblebee’s back!  This NB know how to push our buttons with the retro look.

I know around 100 of you have/can/will run a 10k or half marathon, and a few dozen have told me you’re signing up to do the Great Scottish Run for your Foundation.  You know what it’s about, Health, Education, Learning, Poverty – or in short, it’s about what Celtic means to you and me.

Time to get moving on it.  See the Foundation page here for details.  It’s in October, so there’s a good chance the rain will stop by then.  Let me know when you’ve signed up, celticquicknews@gmail.com

You don’t need to break records, you don’t even need to run the whole course, just get the trainers on and get out there, you’ll be glad you did.

  1. We were expecting a lengthy ban for Ciftci so accept and move on.

Some on twitter saying he got of lightly because he plays for Celtic?

Guess they never heard of the Tonev case?

He has looked good so far though rusty so his lengthy wait to play in SPL should have him fired up.

His discipline will have to be good from here on as he is a marked man by the msms and referees.

  2. I think the Celtic team should arrive onto the park under one of those long dragony things you see at Chinese parades.

this should help us to “curry” favour with our new viewers.

What’s in a moniker after all given some deem it necessary to change theirs?

  4. The idiocy and hypocrisy of some posters on here is truely breathtaking!

If a Celtic player had been bitten…

If a new Ranger had been the bitter…

If a Celtic player had been the biter and was then transferred to another club but Celtic were punished…

Skelves, eyes and planks come to mind.

Sometimes the quality of contributions to this site are abysmally bad, jaundiced and prejudiced.

    Pathetic!

  5. GG,

I expect if we’d waited we’d be sitting waiting till after the window closed, we signed him and the date was set quick style.

Like TT I had my doubts but watching him properly in his first game for us as that’s the only time I actually pay attention to a player, I have to say I think he’s going to be a player for us. And as has been said on numerous occasions I think he’ll add a bit of bite to our attack

  6. BSR,

True enough, I’ve had three or four and it changed my outlook every time :) in fact it took ages for people to recognise me each time :oD)))

  7. Just on.

6 games? Think that’s actually pretty lenient.

    justafan… hypocrisy is everywhere

Ciftci ban ? Deal with it and move on, he wasn’t employed by Celtic at that time so nothing really to do with Celtic, if he ever does it (if he did to begin with) when wearing the hoops I would be pretty disgusted but what is done is done……

Hope this ban makes Nadir even more determined to put the ball in the back of the pokey

And if that troublemaker comes back I’ll sort him again, pain in the ass troll he is

Seen a headline on the internet yesterday “Jim McAllister set to take on Celtic by himself”

    Now that’s paranoid cdc

VP and Sipsini, the one word I have learned to master on these sunshade, “people watching” occasions without moving my lips is ………JEEEEEEZO!

  13. embramike says "the Huns are Deid" on

With Ciftci missing all 6 league matches in August, it only leaves us with Griffiths as our main striker with Scepovic (who was the only unused sub v Eibar) as back up, and possibly Stokes as a last option.

Think we need to bring in another striker (even if only on loan for 6 months?) in case Griffiths picks up an injury (or suspension) during August. Without another striker we would also be unlikely to offload Scepovic or Stokes this window.

    Any thoughts boys ?

Bourne, that headline just sums up the written media here.

The old bad news about Celtic, good news about Rangers now Sevco, sells s still as strong as ever even taking into account the downward sales pattern of our press.

Play wee Forrest through the middle or Aidan when he comes back, what a game McGeady had against that Rangers mob in the cup final, when that team was about, in fact Darren O’Dea wasn’t bad that day but I would let him enjoy his time on India

  17. lennon's passion on

Cifti commit crime do the time.

Stokes IMO best position is up front.

  18. embramike says "the Huns are Deid" on

    Gerryfaethebrig @ 20:18

Forrest falls over too easily playing wide and is no way robust enough to play through the middle.

Also don’t hold with bringing back old players e.g McGeady, Samaras, Hooper etc. They left for a reason and would struggle to recapture their old form in the Hoops. More nostalgic than part of Ronny’s forward looking plan.

  19. “hey left for a reason and would struggle to recapture their old form in the Hoops.”

I would expect them to be better, their old form wasn’t much to write home about :)

I wonder how the MSM will compare our loan signings against Sevco signing the cream of the talent from England’s best divisions for producing young starlets.

I would love McGeady to come back, he left because we got offered stupid money for him, even though his time at Everton hasn’t been the best (Sutton at Chelsea) I think ihe would be terrific, alongside Lubo, Naka and Henrilk, wee McGeady entertained me at Celtic park, bring him home

They’ve signed the same two young superstars from Wigan for about four days now.
