SPFL bet on China

787

Interesting development reported this morning by the BBC that the SPFL have sold rights to a Chinese broadcaster for around £500k per year.  With rights for major European leagues commanding premium fees, it seems intuitive that there’s space for lower-cost content, but Scottish football must be starting from a position of practically zero market knowledge in China.  Unless Zheng Zhi is a whole lot more popular than I realised.

The other aspect about China to bear in mind is the size and habits of its gambling market.  If you are a gambler, you don’t watch football for the thrill of following your favourite team, you watch for the opportunity to beat the bookie, and in this respect, Scottish football is as valuable as any league.

Sport’s relationship with gambling has been a source of concern, especially in the Scottish lower leagues, but when you look up your fixture list and see the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership, there’s no point getting precious about the influence Chinese gamblers.

I see the Bumblebee’s back!  This NB know how to push our buttons with the retro look.

I know around 100 of you have/can/will run a 10k or half marathon, and a few dozen have told me you’re signing up to do the Great Scottish Run for your Foundation.  You know what it’s about, Health, Education, Learning, Poverty – or in short, it’s about what Celtic means to you and me.

Time to get moving on it.  See the Foundation page here for details.  It’s in October, so there’s a good chance the rain will stop by then.  Let me know when you’ve signed up, celticquicknews@gmail.com

You don’t need to break records, you don’t even need to run the whole course, just get the trainers on and get out there, you’ll be glad you did.

    The zombies are “beeling.”……….whits new?

  2. Surely the point of a ban is to punish the club whose player has misbehaved? So why are Celtic being punished? Because we’re Celtic?

  3. Is the lack of an appeal due to Ciftci being a United player at the time of the offence?

Or is it a spineless response to a vengeful SFA?

The joys of watching sport with the wife. She just asked what the golfers real jobs are. The wee man has her convinced Oosthuizen works for UPS.

They thought they’d resume their standing in the ludge to fend off any consequences for going bust a second and hopefully, final time.

Old Ray Milland would undoubtedly have another one, and then go on to shorts!

Well he would if he were still alive.

  9. GG,

The guy sank his teeth into a player, what punishment would you have taken as acceptable ?

  13. I would think that a fine for his club at the time of the offence would be appropriate.

Or whatever the sentence it should have been settled prior to the the transfer window opening.

Can we get a proportional refund from Dundee United?

How about a 5% reduction? Or maybe even 10%?

  14. Having now seen Ciftci’s bite from a couple of angles, and a picture of McCallister’s leg after the incident, I think he deserved to be punished and the length of sanction is proportionate.

Serve the ban, lesson learned hopefully, and lead the charge to the title son.

  19. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Canamlar. the BBC have a lot to answer for , I agree.

There are a lot of sporting events I like to watch on cooncil telly, one of them being the Open.

The coverage of it by the dodgy background national broadcaster is good.

I read on Etims twitter earlier, one of the Kincora House victims has named some of those involved.

  20. Canamalar

We should have been aware that a player we paid good money for was going to be suspended for a fair portion of the season.

Does anyone think if he was still a Dundee United player he would have received a lesser sentence.

    Pre season paranoia practice.

  24. GG,

Of course but the bottom line is he behaved like a savage and if we’re looking for anything but the harshest treatment for that kind of behaviour we’d be acting like huns.

  25. VP…

That’s what holidays are for, I’m not away until October, can’t come bloody quick enough.

Reckon I’ll pop up to my da’s and see if my X-Ray specks I got from a superman comic are still there :)

I was against signing him in the first place.

We should have waited to get this out of the way.

Headlines read CELTIC player banned for biting.

  27. Shifty deserves his ban.

    Behaviour of an animal.

He shouldn’t be anywhere near a Celtic shirt.

    He ain’t that good either.

Just another sign of the downsizing that we are forced to live with.

All that being said ,he will have my support when he wears the Hoops.
