Spivs in for the long haul, relegate Hibs

428

Rangers International adopted a firm position in their court hearing against former director, Imran Ahmed, in Edinburgh yesterday.  Directors and major shareholders know they have a cash shortfall for next season, even if season ticket sales are as higher than anticipated.  Therefore, they know they will need to facilitate a loan, cough up for more shares or issue shares to new investors.   A few million here or there from season tickets will not change this fact – so the argument goes.

With that in mind the club is under no serious threat from fans turning towards Dave King’s glorious attempt to deprive them of cash.  Contrary to earlier reports, organised protests against the Easdales, Ashley and Laxey Partners is in no danger of putting the club under.

The best case scenario for King and his Band of Protagonists is that the club owners would be worn out by the sheer hassle of dealing with their campaign and would wilt before cutting a deal with him on very easy terms.  This does not look likely today, the owners appear intent on getting a return for their money.

At various times during the past two years I’ve offered goodwill towards Hibernian, wishing them well against Hearts in the 2012 Cup Final, encouraging them after they lost to Celtic in the 2013 Final, and on the Hail Hail Media Celtic History podcast I spoke about The Famous Five being the best team in Europe in the late 40s, but I’m all Hibs-d out.  I hope they are relegated.

50 years ago Hibs were almost the same size a club as Celtic, although Hibs were far more successful at the time.  The decades since have utterly destroyed whatever legacy left by The Famous Five.  Sir Tom Farmer’s ownership has provided financial stability but when he combined with Rod Petrie the pair contrived to bring about the most wasteful partnership in the history of the Scottish game – and that includes Sir David Murray’s years of unrestrained bombast.

New chief executive, Leann Dempster, has been more than a firm hand on the tiller at Motherwell, she delivered success over and above their station, but Hibs are so afflicted you wonder is anyone will be able to resurrect it with Petrie still in the chair, Farmer in ultimate control and Terry Butcher in the dugout.  Not only do they deserve relegation, it may be necessary for Dempster to clear-out the deadwood above and below her.  Better to be relegated than stumble on with Petrie and his Inverse Midas Touch.

Some good Celtic fans and CQN’ers are holding an event at Monroe’s Tavern in Galway tomorrow in aid of Console, the Irish suicide prevention charity.  One of the many auction items is the photo above, signed by Bertie Auld.  If you would like to help Console, stick a wee bid into ruairigucks@gmail.com .

  4. I don’t have a season book and I’ve never been near hospitality but I love watching the Celtic. I go when I can and I also go whenever the U-20s are playing at a time when I can go. Too often this is 2pm when I’m at work. Like many, I’ve stood in the freezing rain at Barrowfield and I’ve taken time off to get to Dumbarton, Cappielow, Livingston etc from Glasgow.

Few weeks ago, I was not amused by the Ibrox decision to play their match against us behind closed doors but even more annoyed that we agreed the Lennoxtown match would also be behind closed doors. You can guess how I’m feeling now that the title decider v Dundee United has just been moved at a day’s notice, from tomorrow to Friday. I had arranged time off for tomorrow. No explanation given by the club and no apology. Why do I bother?

I bother because they are a great group of players and they play the Celtic way. They dererve better support but the schedules make that difficult. It seems that the club don’t see the potential in opening these games up to a wider audience. If we had a positive attitude to football development in Scotland our U-20s would be playing regularly in one of the lower leagues and we could all see them. What is stopping us?

Regarding Hibs. Their supporters are a shower of negative, moaning ne’er-do-wells. They absolutely hate Celtic and the Celtic support. We caused all their problems, stole all their players. Even those for whom we paid handsomely. Most of the kids who support them today have no idea of their Irish beginnings or indeed what the word Hibernian means. That has been carefully airbrushed from any discussions between fathers and their sons. Talk to any typical Hibs fan today about their Irish origins and their response is likely to be “We’ve moved on. You are bigots like Rangers supporters who are stuck in the past. One is as bad as the other”.

I couldn’t care less if they go down.

  14. Libertadores News

    ++++++++++++++

Work commitments meant I missed out on most of the last sixteen games. However, once the dust settled, the quarter finals look (number in brackets is the seeding of the team):-

    Lanus, ARG (14) v Bolivar, BOL (6)

San Lorenzo, ARG (15) v Cruzeiro, BRA (10)

    Atl Nacional, COL (13) v Defensor Sporting, URG ( 5 )

    Nacional, PAR (16 ) v Arsenal, ARG (9)

First leg games played tonight/tomorrow, with returns next. Competition then goes on hold until after the World Cup.

Main points to note from the above is that none of the top four seeded (Velez, Gremio, Santos Laguna and Atletico-MG) teams made it beyond the last sixteen.

In a glass half empty/full view this means that the “better” teams are now out of the tournament, but also makes it a lot more interesting in terms of who the eventual winners will now be (I’d have liked to have seen a Gremio v Santos final, but that’s no gonny happen noo).

    Whatever, tonight’s games:-

    Nacional, PAR (16 ) v Arsenal, ARG (9)

Two teams who, relatively, speaking are more known for defensive, hit on the break style of play, than anything else. That being said Nacional have one of the worst defensive records for the teams remaining in the competition, whilst Arsenal have the best .

Nacional have got this far after (IMHO) a freak away draw against a poor, on the night, Velez side. Tonight they’ll be looking for central midfield trio of Marcos Riveros, Silvio Torales and Derlis Orué to provide the creativity for twin strikers, Fredy Bareiro and Julian Benitez. Something that they’ve not really done too much of (so far) this tournament.

Martin Palermo’s Arsenal will be without veteran keeper, Campestrini (injured) and defender Echevierra (suspended) . Arsenal are a team in reform and not really known for much else other than being a well organized side. I’d expect them to park tyhe bus tonight.

Prediction (hard to predict) DRAW ( 60%)

    San Lorenzo, ARG (15) v Cruzeiro, BRA (10) )

The “miracle” that is San Lorenzo’s campaign just keeps on going. After eliminating a poor Gremio 4-2 on penalties in Porto Allegre, they now face the last Brasilian side in the competition, Cruzeiro.

After a series of “divinely assisted events” people are starting to believe that this maybe (finally – they’ve never won the Libertadores) San Lorenzo’s season. SL have injury doubts over Angel Correa and will be without suspended, key midfielder Leonardo “PiPi” Romagnolli. SL likely line up in a 4-4-2 formation.

Cruzeiro fielded a team of reserves at the weekend, but still managed to pull off a 3-2 away win at Atleticó-PR. Cruzeiro tend to favour a lone striker away from home and will likely go with a 4-4-1-1 formation with Ricardo Goulart sitting just behind Julio Baptista. Only surprise being that Willian will likely start on the left side midfield, rather than the more attack minded (and temperamental) Dagoberto.

Prediction (a lot depends on if Correa is fit) HOME WIN ( 60%)

Personally, I wouldna bet on either game.

Just wondering if it would be better for the SPL club to stay up. If they go down there will probably be a lot of cost-cutting and it could weaken them quite a bit. Falkirk and Hamilton have some good young players, and with a year’s more experience they will be strong.

That really is crap for you mate. Just checked on the O.S and there is no mention why it has been changed. I wonder if it was done to allow more people to see it, ironically?

Lots of these changes to the first team fixtures badly affect our supporters travelling from Ireland and England etc – after they have booked hotels and flights. I know a few lads from Dublin who have lost out after changes to the schedules.

Fair play to you for making the effort to attend though. Only good thing might be the lads getting an extra 24 hours to rest after the excellent recent result.

I honestly don’t remember any anguish, real or fake, from Celtic supporters, the last time Hibs were relegated.

We have nothing in common with them, save for the shirt colours.

A few years ago, as a commercial initiative, they tried to recultivate their Irish origins.

    That died a death.

They, at one stage tried to change their name,

As far as that is concerned, we are as close to Sporting of Lisbon.

You have me well confused now. Do you mean that you believed that it was Rangers who stole Hibs players until a few years ago or that you disseminated that view until a few years ago. Where did you get the view from? I know that you did not state you had read it on CQN but you presented it as a little known fact to CQN, something which I felt was widely known about our history, hence why you never saw a fictitious story about our early dealings with Hibs on here. There was no misinformation needing correcting, IMO.

Anybody pitching such a view would be corrected at the drop of a hat on any site I am aware of. Again, I’d have to ask where you felt you picked up this viewpoint from.
