SPL cannot hold secret meetings with Rangers bidders

806

All three outfits looking to take control of Rangers want to meet the SPL before formalising their bids.  It would be inappropriate for any bidder to discuss the terms under which a new company could enter the SPL with the League’s executive.  It is not their place to negotiate with the League, or to establish the terms under which they would be prepared to spend money on Rangers.

Let’s be clear about what cannot be achieved by meeting the League:

The SPL cannot give them any indication as to whether the resolutions will be passed

They cannot give them any indication if other resolutions will be proposed and passed

They cannot give them any indication on the probability of a new company being given access to the SPL

SPL executives have no influence on these matters.  From an information discovery position, these meetings are utterly pointless, there is no need for them and no insight can be gained from them.

The SPL executive cannot consider representations from third parties who are hoping to cut a deal on buying a club.  If any bidder were to discuss their own bid or the consequences of any sanction the meeting becomes wholly inappropriate.

Any meetings which do take place should be minuted, with minutes distributed to all SPL clubs, and should be open to any other SPL clubs who wish to attend.

No secret deals, no secret attempts to influence.

Pay your bills!

Barcelona’s debt revealed to be a staggering €578m and financial black hole widens

Posted by SPORT WITNESS on April 14, 2012 at 9:08 in Sport Witness FootballView Discussions.

Many see Barcelona as the model of how a football club should be run. Bringing players through from the youth ranks and pairing them with international stars brought in to complement their talents. In comparison to teams like Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Chelsea they are held up as the way football should be.

Except it’s not quite that clear cut. The Economist has done a report based on the auditing of Barcelona’s accounts by Deloitte. The audit reveals that Barcelona have a financial negative equity which amounts to €71m. The Economist says that due to the Act of Sport in Spain, football clubs are subject to different rules to a normal business and if Barcelona didn’t have that privilege they would find themselves having to rebalance their assets.

This is a whole lot of jargon but along with other figures it shows the club are a bit of a financial basket case and the perception of them being what all others should aim for is farcical, off the pitch at least.

The Economist say that although the club only made a loss of €9.3m last year the total club debt is €578.1m, and perhaps even more worryingly, Barcelona are projected to struggle to pay back loans and service debts. They are in an enviable situation where banks almost take pride in lending them money and the €155m loan they took out last year to cover running costs has not yet been repaid.

Barcelona aren’t out on their own in La Liga with this suation, a recent report highlighted the money owed by Spanish clubs to both banks and the tax man. It led a Bayern Munich representative to complain that Germany were backing up the Spanish state financially who was backing up La Liga football clubs, making it harder for German teams to triumph in Europe.

He had a point and if UEFA are really serious about Financial Fair Play then surely teams can’t be bankrolled by friendly banks and the tax man.

  3. Morning,

Really looking forward to the game today.

    Atmosphere will be brilliant.

We definitely have the future England no.1 at the club, Champions League football will play a big part in his decision although im sure he has seen enough to realise he can make a name for himself with us. He is still learning but you can see he has taken in everything the coaches at the club are teaching him. HH

I have said on here that I have’nt bought a paper since “thugs and thieves”.

I also cancelled sky and espn for reasons that have been well documented, so CQN and Celtic online are where I get my Celtic news.

Correct me if I’m wrong but has FF or his agent, at this point, almost two full seasons into his Celtic employment, indicated a willingness to remain with us?

Personally I’d rather know sooner than later what his intentions are.

  7. Fraser Forster is the most under rated Celtic player that I can remember.

He got my vote for Celtic’s POTY.

    He will only get better.

We must move heaven and earth to get him.

A team has to have a strong spine.

The goalkeeper is the foundation of that spine.

FF will one day keep goal for his country.

He will have a good sell on potential, especially after the exposure he receives in The Champions League.

  8. Interesting article from G Speirs, many good and salient points, though a few posters have asked about the angle?

I don’t want to seem disingenuous but what about the Third Way?

It is the first time I have read about it in the MSM.

I posted about it some time ago as the smart move for RFCia….Demotion…

If R@ngers and the various composiums fail to Pheonix into the SPL the best route for them could be SFL 1.

We know by the dilatory approach to imposing penalties for R@ngers wrong doing, contrasting starkly with the unseemly haste in trying to Gerrymander changes to secure RFCia’s future, that the Fix is in, but what Fix?

    IF

They look like failing; due to Regulatory hurdles being too high to breach, the moral ground swell rising up to ensure the right thing is done or none of the under resourced composiums seal the deal, then demotion is the answer.

The SPL & SFA can look good by inflicting draconian punishments, by either a huge multi-points deduction leading to relegation or more likely a straight demotion to SFL 1. That covers all of the wrong doing in one swipe. Wiping out the wrong doing of SDM, AJ & CW’s seasons without loosing titles, trophies or licenes.

R@ngers avoid SFL 3, three year oblivion (minimum), they have a season (in which they have no chance of European Football anyway) to get their act together with less pressure, less overheads, more time to Fix the Pheonix and a great chance of promotion straight back to the SPL. Especially if they increase it to 14 clubs.

So what would we think of RFCia/newco in SFL 1 next season?

  9. Tell you what…………..I’ve got a feeling those that don’t support our Club (capitalised or otherwise) will be sleekitly hoping we trip up today.

Any game against that horrible outfit is fraught with difficulty and if that wee foul- machine Black is deployed we’ll need luck and an incrediblly good start to the game to stay on top.

The signs aren’t good either regarding the crony – in – the – black.

    Just win it Celtic.

Today we’ll have to beat more than Hearts.

    HHH.

Barca entered into a sponsorship deal with Qatar, their debt is being covered meanwhile they are enjoying lucrative tv and tournament income aided and abetted with strong merchandising.

In short they will see this recession out many others won’t…..what environment will remain is for us (Celtic) to make advantage of!

Jabba doing the typical provocative tabloid somersault change in position from Rankers must be in the SPL to Rankers in the 3rd division

IMO Jabba is calling the SPL and Celtic out, particularly the Celtic stance, you don’t need them you say, prove it, vote them out! Jabba names Celtic as being involved in the drawing up of the recent SPL newco proposals

Paul67 and Barcabhoy have both claimed the boards stance is to vote against a newco although Celtic have not issued any official statement to date on the Newco point, fair enough IMO as we still need clarification from the soap opera that is Rankers in administration.

Rankers in the 3rd division lets wait and see? It may well be an honourable route to take, with an addition of a apology to Scottish football, this acceptance could be a starting point for a genuine new beginning

However IMO if the blue knights and the various Rankers supporters organisations get in, we will return immediately to WATP, Scottish football needs us and Jabba will somersault again, long way to go yet

    Interesting.

I have long been extolling the virtues of German football. It is organised and run with a rare commodity in the football world – common sense.

I have said many times and will repeat it here: if Platini is serious about Financial Fair Play he will take Germany as the starting point, let local associations take local fiscal rules, established owenrship models etc and work toward implementing something akin to the German model across europe.

No system is perfect but if and when La Liga and the EPL implode and Plaitini starts to actually do something other than make speeches about fair play the Germans will be streets ahead of everyone else for at least a decade.

I love Barca. But for the sake of football I would love to see Bayern win the CL this season.

I’m not going to the match today.

We need to be close at hand to home just now.

A win today keeps our season going.

    51 -49 in our favour.

This will be a real toughy.

I hope our players are as hungry for success as you and I ,or indeed Neil Lennon.

There is somewhat of a question mark over a chequered big game winning mentality.

    Let’s answer the question positively.

    TT

  22. what about this, we offer to let all the other teams in the league to play 1 of their home games against us at celtic park. if celtic take the running costs , expenses [police costs] and a 20% fee for usiing celtic park the away teams could probably walk away with more than they would for

2 games at their own home ground. and celtic’ s profit would at least cover players wages, so we both win i e if we were drawn away against dunfermline as our first game next season, they choose to play the game at paradise, they;d be eligible to a share of 60,000

  23. TinyTim

I’m sure we are not alone in thinking that. Like Philbhoy says though he really needs to come out and let the club know asap. For me he is definitely option 1. HH

  24. Jambo` s back line is vulnerable to pace and movement

Hooper,Sammi and Commons for me …

solid midfield three …VW,Ledley and Broon

    interesting choices in defence …

  25. Have a good day all. Off oot before returning to watch the game on over priced Sky TV. Discovered yesterday I am paying £50 a month for the privilege of watching maybe two Celtic games.

The only reason I persist with it is that I know if I didn’t have it in the house I’d be at the pub watching it and the £50 starts to look cheap. But I don’t know if I can continue to justify it.

I would happily pay the money direct to Celtic to watch live games. Instead I am keeping murdoch rich and providing money to financial cheats all over the football world. Something wrong there. When the season ends I may have to review the situation.

£600 a year equates to a couple of trips to Paradise with Junior RT but missing out on live games every other week on TV. Decisions will have to be made.

I wonder how many Celtic supporters are paying that kind of money to Sky. I wonder if we are, as a support paying more in to them than Celtic get out.

Do Celtic TV on ‘tinternet still show the games later in the day for UK/ Irish subscribers?
