SPL threat effectively terminates football in Scotland

1889

Yesterday evening STV revealed the real outcome of last week’s meeting between Stewart Regan, Neil Doncaster and David Longmuir as a proverbial gun was put to the head of Scottish Football League clubs.

In short, SPL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, no doubt with the support of some clubs but without the prior knowledge or support of Celtic, has threatened to kick 20 SFL clubs out of the senior game unless they acquiesce to his demand to parachute Sevco into the First Division.

The proposal was presented by SFL chief executive, David Longmuir, and appears to carry his endorsement.

Five scenarios are portrayed:

‘Rangers’ remaining in the SPL is dismissed as SPL clubs have confirmed they will vote no.

‘Rangers’ going to the third division is objected to on two grounds, financial (which is laboured a bit) and – wait for it – “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

Ponder that one for a moment, “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

‘Rangers’ to the First Division is presented as being “financially possible to recover from this scenario”.

‘Rangers’ to SPL2 is dismissed as apparently this would create “a bigger divide” than moving ‘Rangers’ to the First Division but not changing the name of the league.  It is also noted that a legal challenge could bring paralysis.

Finally, they discuss ‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended, which apparently would lead to “complete financial meltdown”.

Then come the inducements to co-opt ‘Rangers’ into the First Division…. cash, your cash.  Lots and lots of your cash, an “immediate cash benefit for all 30 clubs!”  The exclamation mark is theirs!!

We could spend all day dissecting this disgraceful document but I’d like to focus on one immediate element:

‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended – complete financial meltdown.

So how do the SFA, SFL and the SPL rogues who participated in this shambles propose to ensure the SFA Independent Judicial Panel does not suspend ‘Rangers’ for subverting our game for over a decade for fielding illegally registered players for that period?

In short, it cannot.  The independent judicial process will itself need to be subverted.  As I suggested a few days ago, the judges will be told they are no longer wanted, we are back with the hand-selected SFA committee men.

The three most senior executives running our game have told you that one errant club is so powerful it cannot be subject to the rules and must not face the punishments which are due.

I’m not going to dispute the validity of this view (just now), but surely we deserve some honesty? If the Scottish Football Association and Scottish Premier League has accepted the ‘game’ is over, let’s hear from them. Where is the leadership from the SFA president on the collapse of the game under his watch? What are the chief executives saying to their paying customers?

Our sport cannot be subverted below radar.

You have been cheated and the rules will be changed to ensure there are no consequences.  This is no longer a sport, it is a financial accommodation where a few executives are threatening to expel 20 clubs, most of whom have over a century history in the senior game, to allow Sevco to start two divisions higher than they otherwise would.

Celtic can have nothing to do with this.

The game here is dead. The leagues are set to collapse, most likely, no matter what happens now.

howmany clubs is that now say no, after the threats from the sfa\spl\sfl.

  2. Having read the excellent statement issued by the board of Dunfermline Athletic I am firmly convinced t that the proposals/threats forwarded to the clubs by Messrs Regan, Donaldson and Longmuir will be overwhelmingly rejected by the SFL clubs. I also believe that Govan Disunited will not play any competitive football next season but will call to see Lord Hodge and colleagues at regular intervals.

Finally: the Mayans may be right about 2012 being the end of time, the end of time when humanity stops thinking it is body only and responds to those threats to the body by starting to believe in its spirit or ethos and so starts being ethical.

If you look at what is happening in our small corner of reality in terms of Armageddon. it is a spiritual battle of good/right thinking against evil/wrong thinking not a physical one, enabled by the ability to share our spirit/ethics and thoughts derived from them via this wonderful medium, this destroyer of barriers, this ender of the illusion of separateness caused by being a spirit in a body. (Maybe on an adventure holiday from somewhere else just for the experience? :) )

Just had an extraordinary conversation with a senior Hampden insider. They’re inundated with angry fans demanding integrity.

  14. RANGERS are set to lose their three-man American contingent of Carlos Bocanegra, Mo Edu and Alejandro Bedoya – for a paltry total of just £300,000.

Defender Kirk Broadfoot and keeper Neil Alexander can also go on free transfers, should they choose to do so.

And Romanian stopper Dorin Goian also has the option of quitting for a cut-price £500,000, if he wishes, before this transfer window slams shut at the end of August.

SportTimes can reveal that USA skipper Bocan-egra and Bedoya negotiated free transfer clauses when they took big wage cuts back in February after the crisis-hit club plunged into administration.

And Edu can also leave thanks to a cut-price £300,000 clause which can be activated by interested clubs.

The USA trio – who have all transferred over into the newco – were signed for combined transfer fees of £3.5million.

But Rangers will now receive less than a tenth of that sum as they are all believed to see their futures elsewhere.

Bedoya is not due back at Murray Park until July 9. but has told friends he expects to depart, while Bocanegra and Edu have a further week’s leave after that due to their international exertions.

Sources close to the American stars doubt whether they will ever be back in Scotland, with their agents actively working on moves.

Goian has transferred over to the newco and has intimated he will wait and see what league the club are playing in before he makes a decision on his future.

However, in return for taking a 75% wage cut, the former Palermo man has a clause that he can go for £500,000 in the window and that option may yet be taken up.

Broadfoot and Alexander, who both reported back for pre-season yesterday, can also go on a free during the remainder of their contracts if they take that option as a result of their wage sacrifices.

  15. I’ve just cancelled the Sunday Sport so can you add me to the list?

I wouldn’t just yet. Yorkson’s statement has far more to do with self preservation than sporting integrity and the desires of his club’s supporters.

Since it appears abundantly clear that, with the exception of the former Rangers support (and not all of them), Scottish Football fans are wholeheartedly opposed to special treatment for entry of Sevco 58 at any other level than the 3rd Division and since it also is abundantly clear that the bandwagon to minimise the impact on the former Rangers is orchestrated by Mr Doncaster and condoned via the inactivity of Mr Regan and Mr Ogilvie to apply the rules which exist should efforts not be being made by people closest to the scene to engage with other club’s fans to form alliances with one simple aim that being the removal of the main culprits by fan pressure on those with the power to remove and replace them viz. the Chairmen of the Clubs? Am I missing something?
