SPL threat effectively terminates football in Scotland

1889

Yesterday evening STV revealed the real outcome of last week’s meeting between Stewart Regan, Neil Doncaster and David Longmuir as a proverbial gun was put to the head of Scottish Football League clubs.

In short, SPL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, no doubt with the support of some clubs but without the prior knowledge or support of Celtic, has threatened to kick 20 SFL clubs out of the senior game unless they acquiesce to his demand to parachute Sevco into the First Division.

The proposal was presented by SFL chief executive, David Longmuir, and appears to carry his endorsement.

Five scenarios are portrayed:

‘Rangers’ remaining in the SPL is dismissed as SPL clubs have confirmed they will vote no.

‘Rangers’ going to the third division is objected to on two grounds, financial (which is laboured a bit) and – wait for it – “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

Ponder that one for a moment, “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

‘Rangers’ to the First Division is presented as being “financially possible to recover from this scenario”.

‘Rangers’ to SPL2 is dismissed as apparently this would create “a bigger divide” than moving ‘Rangers’ to the First Division but not changing the name of the league.  It is also noted that a legal challenge could bring paralysis.

Finally, they discuss ‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended, which apparently would lead to “complete financial meltdown”.

Then come the inducements to co-opt ‘Rangers’ into the First Division…. cash, your cash.  Lots and lots of your cash, an “immediate cash benefit for all 30 clubs!”  The exclamation mark is theirs!!

We could spend all day dissecting this disgraceful document but I’d like to focus on one immediate element:

‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended – complete financial meltdown.

So how do the SFA, SFL and the SPL rogues who participated in this shambles propose to ensure the SFA Independent Judicial Panel does not suspend ‘Rangers’ for subverting our game for over a decade for fielding illegally registered players for that period?

In short, it cannot.  The independent judicial process will itself need to be subverted.  As I suggested a few days ago, the judges will be told they are no longer wanted, we are back with the hand-selected SFA committee men.

The three most senior executives running our game have told you that one errant club is so powerful it cannot be subject to the rules and must not face the punishments which are due.

I’m not going to dispute the validity of this view (just now), but surely we deserve some honesty? If the Scottish Football Association and Scottish Premier League has accepted the ‘game’ is over, let’s hear from them. Where is the leadership from the SFA president on the collapse of the game under his watch? What are the chief executives saying to their paying customers?

Our sport cannot be subverted below radar.

You have been cheated and the rules will be changed to ensure there are no consequences.  This is no longer a sport, it is a financial accommodation where a few executives are threatening to expel 20 clubs, most of whom have over a century history in the senior game, to allow Sevco to start two divisions higher than they otherwise would.

Celtic can have nothing to do with this.

The game here is dead. The leagues are set to collapse, most likely, no matter what happens now.

  1. Ref McFadden.

I was watching 2 days of the SFA Level 2 coaching badges couple of weeks ago at Largs.

My nephews were part of the “runners”.

Faddy came across as quite shy. And took all of the course very serious. On watchiing him , skill level is trememdous, ever move , drill, exercise completed brilliantly.

I do get the “if he was fit” comments, but I also think he is worth a gamble.

Not huge money, and only 29.

Apologies mate,i was indeed replying to the idea of signing McFadden. You are right and ive suspected for many years,we also sign players late in windows to avoid paying them in close season.Makes sense tae me but we need FF to commit now or else look elsewhere as a new keeper probably needs a bit more time to settle in with the defence IMO.HH.

  3. They really are desperate for cash…

Brian Stockbridge, Finance Director of The Rangers Football Club, issued the following statement today.

“There has been considerable debate and confusion about the status of season ticket direct debits and I would like to offer Rangers supporters clarity on this matter today.

“As a result of a new company being formed it was necessary to put in place new direct debit arrangements in order for supporters to pay money to the Club as normal.

“No season ticket money has been collected as yet from direct debits and none will be until July 6 at the earliest.

“If supporters have already advised us they wish to cancel their season tickets then it will be cancelled in the ticketing system and when the payment instruction is due, that payment will not be taken from their accounts.

“In view that a new company has been set up to take direct debits some supporters may have been concerned that the company contacting them was different to last season.

“This is inevitable because of the transition from the old company to the newly formed company and we regret any inconvenience caused to supporters. There is no question of any money being taken in advance of July 6.

“However, supporters can be rest assured that all monies from season tickets, when they start to be collected by direct debit, will be going to the Club and for sole use by the Club.

No worries buddy, sorry for not being clear what I was on about!

Agree, its a fine line between signing players early as possible(and paying them over the close season), and holding off a bit to save a good few quid(in doing so raising the risk of losing the player to someone else).

To add another layer of complexity players and agents aren’t always too accomodating, with the latter often advising the former to hold off and see what else comes up.

Its a wonder any tranfers get completed at all sometimes!

The keeper and defence situation are ones we shouldn’t put off, you’re right- unless of course Lenny is of the opinion youngsters like Marcus Fraser are ready for the first team. Should be interesting.

  7. Someone should tell Green that Mel Gibson is a Tim!

Green said: “It’s not right that a proportion of Rangers fans continue to attack my consortium and try to undermine our rescue plans.

“It’s not right that every two weeks a Mel Gibson appears, delivers a Braveheart statement, then doesn’t deliver anything.”

Green faces the prospect of relaunching newco Rangers in the Scottish Football League, with his application for entry to the Scottish Premier League doomed to failure.

Seven of the 12 SPL clubs have now publicly stated plans to reject the bid at next week’s formal vote, which requires an 8-4 majority.

Reports yesterday claimed plans are being put in place that would see Rangers relegated from the SPL to the First Division with immediate effect, rather than start from scratch in Division Three.

Asked for his views on the proposals, Green added: “Did you refuse to pay the price of membership of your golf club?

“My opinion upon right or wrong doesn’t matter.

“We will continue to work to ensure Rangers play football next season and that we can look everyone in the eye.”

Will said player enhance our chances at domestic honors ? with the huns on skid row and an inevitable retraction of financial outlay by our SPL rivals, i would suggest our present squad is more than adequate domestically

C/L qualification and any hope of the group stages i believe will require squad additions with quality and experience, however that is a very expensive route, will Faddy enhance our European chances ? it certainly should be an option we are considering irrespective if he has snubbed us before, eyes on that prize of C/L group qualification i would certainly have him in for pre season training

  23. had to read that article a few times to really beleive it!!!

My god do they think we are all so so stupid to just accept this ‘proposal’

I have listened to the reasons for the Celtic board saying nothing over the last few months and although at times thinking they should have spoken out, have admitted that they were right to say nothing but by god if these proposals are allowed to happen it really will be financial meltdown for the whole of scottish football.

The other SPL clubs have listened to their fans about a newco getting straight into the SPL but if a newco is allowed directly into division 1 with financial incentives from the clubs who have played by the rules and paid their taxes!!!!especially Celtic!! and told they have no choice, then it really is time to put the padlocks on the gates of all of the grounds and declare football in Scotland as dead.

I still cannot believe that Lawell and Desmond are not in the ears of Fifa and Uefa about this whole sorry mess!

Maybe this is all part of the exit strategy, to get us into another league in another country that exists for the benefit of all the clubs and not just the one who has cheated.

Apologies Kit for not getting back to you the other night, didn’t actually read your latter post until next day, different timezones and all. Didn’t realise it was a private conversation between yourself and Macjay, was it, so may have taken your assertion out of context, which if I remember rightly was over the role of Ireland during the latter part of a World War which had began in 1914, (with 19th century roots) and ended in 1994. Trust me I was in Berlin that day. Your point, albeit in context, was that Britain , post Dunkirk could not defend itself against a German invasion. My point, unsaid it has to be said, was that is just about the only thing Britain could do after the crushing defeat in France. The only thing. A defining moment, though not a final one.

The striker, who played for Hibernian last season, was found guilty earlier this month after a trial.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court had heard that police in the city saw him snorting drugs in a car on 14 May 2011.

He fled after giving police a false name, only to be caught a few hundred metres away.

Sheriff Derrick McIntyre told O’Connor that he could have been jailed for up to 12 months for both offences.

He told the footballer he would have been fully justified in sending him to prison for possessing the significant amount of the Class A drug.

He said: “I would have thought someone in your position, a footballer in the public eye, would have set some example to other people, including your own son.”
