SPL threat effectively terminates football in Scotland

1889

Yesterday evening STV revealed the real outcome of last week’s meeting between Stewart Regan, Neil Doncaster and David Longmuir as a proverbial gun was put to the head of Scottish Football League clubs.

In short, SPL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, no doubt with the support of some clubs but without the prior knowledge or support of Celtic, has threatened to kick 20 SFL clubs out of the senior game unless they acquiesce to his demand to parachute Sevco into the First Division.

The proposal was presented by SFL chief executive, David Longmuir, and appears to carry his endorsement.

Five scenarios are portrayed:

‘Rangers’ remaining in the SPL is dismissed as SPL clubs have confirmed they will vote no.

‘Rangers’ going to the third division is objected to on two grounds, financial (which is laboured a bit) and – wait for it – “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

Ponder that one for a moment, “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

‘Rangers’ to the First Division is presented as being “financially possible to recover from this scenario”.

‘Rangers’ to SPL2 is dismissed as apparently this would create “a bigger divide” than moving ‘Rangers’ to the First Division but not changing the name of the league.  It is also noted that a legal challenge could bring paralysis.

Finally, they discuss ‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended, which apparently would lead to “complete financial meltdown”.

Then come the inducements to co-opt ‘Rangers’ into the First Division…. cash, your cash.  Lots and lots of your cash, an “immediate cash benefit for all 30 clubs!”  The exclamation mark is theirs!!

We could spend all day dissecting this disgraceful document but I’d like to focus on one immediate element:

‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended – complete financial meltdown.

So how do the SFA, SFL and the SPL rogues who participated in this shambles propose to ensure the SFA Independent Judicial Panel does not suspend ‘Rangers’ for subverting our game for over a decade for fielding illegally registered players for that period?

In short, it cannot.  The independent judicial process will itself need to be subverted.  As I suggested a few days ago, the judges will be told they are no longer wanted, we are back with the hand-selected SFA committee men.

The three most senior executives running our game have told you that one errant club is so powerful it cannot be subject to the rules and must not face the punishments which are due.

I’m not going to dispute the validity of this view (just now), but surely we deserve some honesty? If the Scottish Football Association and Scottish Premier League has accepted the ‘game’ is over, let’s hear from them. Where is the leadership from the SFA president on the collapse of the game under his watch? What are the chief executives saying to their paying customers?

Our sport cannot be subverted below radar.

You have been cheated and the rules will be changed to ensure there are no consequences.  This is no longer a sport, it is a financial accommodation where a few executives are threatening to expel 20 clubs, most of whom have over a century history in the senior game, to allow Sevco to start two divisions higher than they otherwise would.

Celtic can have nothing to do with this.

The game here is dead. The leagues are set to collapse, most likely, no matter what happens now.

    Hi Fellow Celtic Fans,

In short this ‘ulTIMatum’ and rhetoric sounds to me like “If we are to die, then you are coming with us!” Typical rhetoric and exactly why we must continue doing what we are doing, which is SUPPORTING CELTIC, through thick and thin.

I for one have made the decision that I WILL improve my efforts to financially SUPPORT Celtic as best as I can, but doing so in ways which ensures that my hard-earned, which I choose to put Celtic’s way, is kept by Celtic and is not propping up other teams. (Given a possibility and GUARANTEE of undoubted fairness and integrity, I would absolutely change my views on this!) I live down south so a Season Ticket is not practical for me. I do not subscribe to Sky Sports or ESPN (Are you listening Sky/ESPN?) because a) I do not want to support other clubs, particularly the EPL, which has nothing to do with my allegiances, and b) why on earth would I pay for a ‘Celtic’ product where the commentators are consistently so biased and clearly anti-Celtic? I wouldn’t pay for a meal that I knew in advance was going to gag in my throat…

Jerseys and other items direct from the online Celtic Shop are an obvious way, and I have decided to subscribe to CH67 now.

A number of posters have floated the idea of beam-backs at Celtic Park, but I would suggest in addition to this that Celtic seriously consider the idea of doing multiple beam-backs down south. There is huge support for Celtic down south from ex-Pat’s like me. This could perhaps be done at a number of grounds or even at Conference Centre’s and perhaps selected Cinema’s. All of these venues would get extra revenue from catering etc. but this would also reinforce the financial view that Celtic in the EPL/Championship (to start) would be great business for the EPL. In communion with other like-minded Supporters I would also take in some of the great games of our History that could be re-run as if they were live. If these were offshore games then we needn’t give the thieves in the Scottish game a penny in Licences even.

I think we need to keep a steady nerve here as we may have won some battles, and might lose some battles, but we need to be constantly vigilant and always remember that we are still fighting a war here that I still expect to drag on for YEARS. We will win the war by keeping our cool and holding our rudder in the direction of Celtic’s future, not by becoming flotsam and jetsam on the tide of the corrupt Scottish establishment. I for one think the board are doing a tremendous job in this regard…

The best thing I (and I speak for myself) can do is remember that, in the words of the song, “We are Celtic Supporters, faithful through and through!” In that vein I will do everything in my power to continue to SUPPORT CELTIC. This gift of Celtic that my forefathers gave me is in my blood and I for one will not let it wither on the vine of collectively corrupt Scottish Football organisations. No, I will continue to nurture this gift and ensure that my own Grandchildren can say the same.

I sincerely hope that Celtic PLC will tap into the goodwill of the Support and find more creative ways of improving ‘Celtic-Only’ revenue streams. I for one will Support such initiatives as best I can for at the end of the day Celtic’s future success is always going to be directly proportional to income revenue.

    Yours in Celtic,

Portugal’s most expensive player, Cristiano Ronaldo, has missed the plane taking his team mates home from Ukraine after their semi-final exit at Euro 2012.

And I said: ‘yes’,” Cristiano told he Ukraine-2012 information center. “Sometimes I sit in first, second or third zone. But I agreed to fly in the fifth. Then I went to a cafe to buy a bun, and the plane took off without me. It’s not fair! ”

    Auldheid,

was trawlling through the articles of association in the wee hours looking fir info on the stuff we were discussing yesterday, strangely I could not find anything about EGM requirements so it doesnt seen there is such a thing at the sfa.

General meeting was all I could find in the handbook and the requirement of 10% or 10 full members are required to apply with an agenda inclusive with the application.

To redeem any integrity scottish football must commission an independent review panel to investigate the sfa’s part if any in the irregularities which allowed their top team to cheat.

I trust you know the detail far better than I do, but I get the feeling this is the last roll of the dice, the final hurrah, the charge of the lightweight brigade, for the old order in Scottish football. And by the old order, I mean the funny handshakes network of Ogilvie and co. and their co-opted apprentice boys Regan and Doncaster.

It’s a plan so brazenly dishonest and so obviously cobbled up on the hoof I suspect it will come to nothing.

Incidentally, we’re not alone, here’s what some Pars fans think of it:

The SFA and SPL can come up with cunning plans all day long. The paying customer on whom the existence of the game depends isn’t buying into it. (thumbsup)

  24. Anybody else think James McFadden will end up signing for us over next couple of weeks? Not advocating it but can see it happening, Lenny was interested back in October.

  25. the long wait is over on

At the risk of sounding reckless and grandiose I would rather out and out DONATE money to Celtic for no return (eg by paying more for a season ticket) than be taxed indirectly to pay for the recklessness of other clubs.

The current ruination of the Western economy is largely due to the hubris and greed of organisations who were allowed to take ruinous gambles for personal gain with no downside because they knew they would not be allowed to fail.

Newco – new start – third division. Anything else is simply unacceptable and morally repugnant.

  26. Sometimes I get incredibly frustrated with this entire circus.

Doncaster and Regan are in position to lead and guide Scottish football. Their remit should be to endorse fair play and ensure that integrity is paramount.

Probably like most on here I’ve been caught up in the continuing daily rollercoaster of emotive language and perpetual fawning from the MSM.

Take all that away and we’re left with a dodo fitba team who are in their current predicament as a result of decades of cheating and gross mismanagement. We didn’t do this to them, they killed themselves. And we now have the SFA/SPL/SFL, our supposed moral compass, doing all they can to create a modern day Lazarus.

Bloody hell, ya clowns, just do the right and just thing and stick them in division 3!!!!

  27. In a sense Dungcaster is indirectly opposing the only SUPERPOWER in the Scottish game. Any serious discussions on the possibility of splitting Celtic’s primary revenue stream would of course result in all out war with the nations largest club- and we know who would win that battle. If they are prepared to humiliate themselves for the sake of accommodating a HunFC that will be a shadow of its former self, what will they do if Celtic rise up like a threatened Lion?

The whole structure and all personnel at the top of Scottish football has to be swept clear if we want to truly transform the game in this country- these belligerent incompetent’s have betrayed all the other member clubs by adopting the default hun threat posture…they have also irrefutably proved they are in no way fit for purpose.
