Strict liability when playing to gallery

2207

Being responsible is not always easy, especially when it comes to running a football club, where playing to the gallery offers vastly better short-term returns, and no doubt a rush of endorphins.

If your fans are engaged in an activity which regularly brings them to the attention of the courts, and your club into disrepute, it doesn’t matter what you think of the apparent offense.  You may chant an offending song in the shower every morning month, but your only public comment on the matter can be to chastise and urge fans to desist.

Clubs in Scotland voted against what is known as strict liability.  This means they are not held responsible for transgressions by their fans – and who wants to be held responsible for the actions of others who protected from personal liability by hiding in a crowd.

Part of the deal on not having strict liability is that clubs must demonstrate that they take all steps necessary to dissuade and educate their fans from carrying out criminal or regulatory offenses.  It’s simply not possible for club to tell fans their illegal actions were justified, as this would place the club itself in the firing line.

The nonsense following the Scottish Cup final is all background noise as far as we are concerned, but be aware the contagion will spread beyond those you could consider highly dysfunctional operators.

Solving Kids Cancer in memory of Oscar Knox

Our own Bundoran Bhoy will run the Edinburgh Marathon on Sunday on behalf of Solving Kids Cancer.  He has put in an enormous amount of work ahead of the event, for a cause which you are only too familiar with.

26 miles is a long way to run.  You can give him some encouragement on his Just Giving page.

Good luck, Tommy.

Agreed…Tom thinks he is the finished article.

5 mins with Brendan though, and Tom will realise, that he isnt ready for the step yet.

Seen this at many different levels in football….players not realising their full potential.

Long ago, when i played….my old coach, would rotate all the players, and get them to play different positions.

He would say…’Its not where you play, its how you play’

He would say….’Brazil….any of those boys could play anywhere on the park, defence, midfield, or forward’

And thats how we learned the different aspects of competitive football.

You were talking about old Coatbridge teams last night .

How about this excerpt from brother Wilfred and the history of Celtic .

As an indication of the margins between longevity of life for a fledgling football club and inauspicious demise in a pauper’s grave, one needs only look at the names of the clubs that registered with the Scottish Football Association on August 21st 1888: Glasgow Celtic Football and Athletic Club, Champfleurie and Adventurers of Edinburgh, Leith Harp, Balaclava Rangers from Oban, Temperance Athletic of Glasgow, Whifflet Shamrock and Britannia of Auchinleck. Brother Walfrid and his associates would come to ponder the mechanics required for a successful launch and, of course, a sustainable flight.

And before you ask … no , I didn’t play with Whifflet Shamrock .

    Very eloquent. Real sincerity.

  5. Chris Sutton’s new dilemma started the minute Brendan Rodgers was appointed, you don’t work for the Daily Reord to be supportive of the Celtic manager. He’ll need to find a new negative slant every week he writes, if he wants to prolong his career.

Even in modern times there were no hacks writing for Tommy Burns they even tried to derail his appointment and Celtic received a record fine for ‘tapping’, they slaughtered John Barnes and Josef Venglos from the off, MON WGS TM and Neil Lennon especially received bad press. MON was never done suing somebody. Fergus McCann was demonised Jock Brown despised and Wim Jansen never received any credit for his achievement, they even followed him to Portugal chasing his resignation story.

Chris Sutton has a nice little earner, he is exceptionally negative about Scottish football even in non Celtic games and unless he sticks with the Daily Record agenda, which is specifically set for the peepil, he won’t last.

    Howye?

Never did get the “good player can play anywhere” crap, do you honestly think big billy could have played outside right and Jinky vice versa?.

Only real positions in my humble opinion that can inter change without really weakening the team structure are the wide position re: wingers and full backs, everywhere else on the park left footed player playing on the right get their feet caught up trying to get the ball over to their correct side, only the wide men get some sort of time to get set,

  7. The Green Man says SACK THE Board on

    When i grew up….long ago:)

It was normal for all the boys to be able to play in different roles in the team.

We could play anywhere….defence, toughened you, midfield, made you scrap, forward, let you do your stuff.

    Adaptabilty was the key.

Football now….is far too specialised in terms of where players can play.

For instance…can you imagine James Forrest playing right-back:)….no, me neither, and thats my point.

Good players can play anywhere on the park….no doubt about that.

Its just in the modern game, they arent asked to do that.

Its all prima donna stuff now.

  10. Green man

On your last post james Forrest in theory should be able to play full back, most full backs I know/ knew were failed wingers

  12. Tom Rogic was a star Futsal player in Australia.Anyone who has watched it on Soccer AM will know the game is all about tricks, flicks, and very, very quick feet.

If memory serves he won some kind of competition to sign with a pro team, and it went from there. He really has not played a lot of high intensity football, due to coming to us and picking up injuries.,which could be affecting his fitness, then again maybe he is short on stamina, something I suspect Henderson has as well.

When he signed for us my mates in Oz were raving to me about how good he would be,and he is highly regarded in Oz.Could be a fantastic player for us if he stays and Brendan can get the best out of him.Does he want to though?.

  13. Green man

Don’t agree at all mo chara

I gave you a prime example from our finest team, do you think we would have brought the big cup back with Jinky at centre back, big billy at outside right, Jim Craig up front?

  14. I would bite yer hand off for £7m for big tam, although if given a choice between rogic and biton , I would keep rogic every time.

I agree, in theory JF should be able to play right -back.

But the reality is different…..he would be aghast if any manager asked him to play in defence, because in his own mind, he is the rampaging winger(in his own mind of course:)).

Modern players are not open to it…..too pampered.

Four players off the top of my head spring to mind.

Roy Aitken…Big Shuggie Ed, Stan Petrov, Stevie Murray,…they used to call them ‘Utility players’

I agree about the Lions….but i think certainly, Big Tommy, Bertie, Stevie Chalmers, Bobby Murdoch of course, John Clarke….and even Jinky and Bobby Lennox….could have played several positions easy.

Imagine…..if we had players like that now:)

Tom Rogic was allegedly offered a new deal earlier this year, has he re- signed ???

He has 12 months left on his current deal

Like James Forrest, who has 6 months left

Any decent offer and let go

I want players who are committed to playing for Celtic

As a club, we cannot be allowing players moving into last year of deals and walking for nothing

  23. COWIEBHOY

    Hasn’t signed up.

  24. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

How many times during the cup final was the BB sung, they talk as if the rendition after the game was the first and only sectarian song sung. Singing sectarian songs at the opposition is incitement partly why it is illegal, no ?

So it could be easily argued on their own logic that the hibs support only responded to incitement and prolonged intimidation, no ?

A warm Heart felt post to Eldiegobhoy.

I never seem to catch you on the Blog as I have posted before. I at times disagree with your views that you post. I at times do agree with your posts.

I have only ever met you the once, briefly in the KoSC Blantyre. It would be great to meet up with you again.

Your post to Eldiegobhoy puts life in to perspective, where football fits into life.

As well as wishing you and Eldiegobhoy a return to good health I would like to see you take a leaf out of Eldiegobhoy ‘s book and buy a Season Ticket. As you especially will appreciate, life has a knack of throwing things at you, so get along and see your Team play, you’ll enjoy it next Season.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  28. Thanks Cowiebhoy,
