Strict liability when playing to gallery

2207

Being responsible is not always easy, especially when it comes to running a football club, where playing to the gallery offers vastly better short-term returns, and no doubt a rush of endorphins.

If your fans are engaged in an activity which regularly brings them to the attention of the courts, and your club into disrepute, it doesn’t matter what you think of the apparent offense.  You may chant an offending song in the shower every morning month, but your only public comment on the matter can be to chastise and urge fans to desist.

Clubs in Scotland voted against what is known as strict liability.  This means they are not held responsible for transgressions by their fans – and who wants to be held responsible for the actions of others who protected from personal liability by hiding in a crowd.

Part of the deal on not having strict liability is that clubs must demonstrate that they take all steps necessary to dissuade and educate their fans from carrying out criminal or regulatory offenses.  It’s simply not possible for club to tell fans their illegal actions were justified, as this would place the club itself in the firing line.

The nonsense following the Scottish Cup final is all background noise as far as we are concerned, but be aware the contagion will spread beyond those you could consider highly dysfunctional operators.

Solving Kids Cancer in memory of Oscar Knox

Our own Bundoran Bhoy will run the Edinburgh Marathon on Sunday on behalf of Solving Kids Cancer.  He has put in an enormous amount of work ahead of the event, for a cause which you are only too familiar with.

26 miles is a long way to run.  You can give him some encouragement on his Just Giving page.

Good luck, Tommy.

I would prefer not to sing “Fenian army” but expect it will be the norm especially at away games.

I am not a cheerleader for Peter Lawwell, but over the piece, IMHO he is a good, not great, CEO.

If folks out there think that we could get someone in to replace him, and that said individual will put up with personal abuse, press vitriol ,threats, enforced changes to day to day living, and instantly replace him on SFA and Euro Club boards, they are mistaken.

    Tin hat time.

So everybody is welcome except Fenians, it’s always the bloody same can’t even sing wur songs in case we offend the self righteous, it’s open to everyone and everyone knows the history if they have a problem with the history they need to ask themselves do they want to be associated with Brendan Rodgers Fenian army.

  6. !!Bada Bing!! on

Canalamar-you’re the one being self righteous now,I am not trying to exclude anyone, exactly the opposite. I am not forgetting where our origins are either. HH

  10. Not much point worrying about the Fenian army thing, the guys that do the singing will sing it, I do believe the decision’s already been made.

  11. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Bada…,

It’s being done because to the entire history of our club we have been cheated because we are Fenians and it’s never been a secret, that was the over reaction, try and keep that in mind, eh

Personally,I want us to project our history in a positive way which I fear “Fenian Army” will not do. Those who supported that old club but now attach themselves to it’s new manifestation love their negative history and take delight in espousing it publicly even though their club has had to change. I enjoy the new songs that Celtic fans have invented over the last ten or so years. Our songs of the 80/90s were hugely influenced by the troubles in Ireland and I think we’ve moved away from that in recent years at home games anyway.

  17. I am very happy to be known as a “Fenian”.The song will be sung, mostly at away games .The thing I like about it is it will get right up the Huns nose.No problems with that.

  19. If fans want to sing Brendan Rodgers Fenian Army that is their choice, personally it’s not my cup of tea, can only see it causing us problems in the long term by giving the media servants of the orcs licence to distort it into their anti-celtic agenda and attempt to drag us down to their level.

I seem to recall from a very early age, the local williamites/huns were rather fond of calling me a ‘Fenian B’

  25. theglasgowcelticway on

It will be sung whether we agree or not. I think attaching Rodgers name to it makes the difference. I don’t believe the guy would really wants that although I could be wrong so that’s why I wouldn’t sing it.

  26. MWD,

    Whatever floats your boat :-))))

Most of us on here know the background of the term Fenian, however in Scotland it is mainly associated with the ” Old Firm”

I for one want to get away from the “Old Firm” . Now that is history, and frankly the Huns ( any format ) are an irrelevance to me and I couldn’t give f@@k what they think.
