Strict liability when playing to gallery

2207

Being responsible is not always easy, especially when it comes to running a football club, where playing to the gallery offers vastly better short-term returns, and no doubt a rush of endorphins.

If your fans are engaged in an activity which regularly brings them to the attention of the courts, and your club into disrepute, it doesn’t matter what you think of the apparent offense.  You may chant an offending song in the shower every morning month, but your only public comment on the matter can be to chastise and urge fans to desist.

Clubs in Scotland voted against what is known as strict liability.  This means they are not held responsible for transgressions by their fans – and who wants to be held responsible for the actions of others who protected from personal liability by hiding in a crowd.

Part of the deal on not having strict liability is that clubs must demonstrate that they take all steps necessary to dissuade and educate their fans from carrying out criminal or regulatory offenses.  It’s simply not possible for club to tell fans their illegal actions were justified, as this would place the club itself in the firing line.

The nonsense following the Scottish Cup final is all background noise as far as we are concerned, but be aware the contagion will spread beyond those you could consider highly dysfunctional operators.

Solving Kids Cancer in memory of Oscar Knox

Our own Bundoran Bhoy will run the Edinburgh Marathon on Sunday on behalf of Solving Kids Cancer.  He has put in an enormous amount of work ahead of the event, for a cause which you are only too familiar with.

26 miles is a long way to run.  You can give him some encouragement on his Just Giving page.

Good luck, Tommy.

I too remember the sudden appearance of Christ on the tv during an Oldco game. Don’t recall who they were playing though.

  2. I too remember the Christ on the cross appearing during the Cologne game(I think?)

I seem to recall that it was round about the time that we were due to play them at Hundump as ibrokes was getting re-built that season.

I think it could have been February / March time as, the game were they had to play us was ‘mysteriously’ called off because of snow on the pitch which, melted away very quickly after the call-off.

The Jungle wound them up about it for several weeks with the chant – “The huns are feart tae play us, and so say all of us!”

It was a guid laugh at the time but, when we got round to fulfilling the fixture, the bassas beat us 1-0 with a header from Alex MacDonald.

But, weeks later we had our revenge in the 4-2 gemme :)

I might be wrong but I was thinking in was 79 around the time of our game at Hampden with Rangers being ‘Frozen’ off ?

I am sure it was Cologne they were playing in the season when they actually beat Juventus and a strong PSV team in the first two rounds.

    I could well be mistaken.

It was unusual in that there wasn’t much love football on tv then. Second leg at Ibrox I think.

    Great memories.

I think they actually won the game at Hampden 1 nil in the end but as you say the 4-2 was the one that mattered.

We were 7th or 8th in the league on 1st March that season. Beat Aberdeen 1 nil ( Alfie Conn ) and the rest is history.

If my memory is correct I think that we had about 10

weeks in a row were our games were called off ?

    What a pile up.

It was Cologne now I think of it. I can remember walking home from primary school in the sunshine only to find out the game against Oldco the following day was off. Celtic groundsman turned up at Hampden and weren’t allowed in. The made a big fuss about the terracing being dangerous too.

    Tinytim,

We may be flying by the seat of our pants, but better that than not getting off the ground at all.

We have good players. We just didn’t have them playing in the right order.(C. Eric Morecambe).

If BR can do his job and organise them, I believe we should have enough.

We really have to hit the ground running.

Additionally, we have to think about who would be available to come in on the 1st.July.

Certainly not anyone involved in the Euros, and better players will wait to see if the are in the CL, or even EL before they would decide to come to Celtic Park.

Training starts on the 20th June, so I don’t think that unless we sign a superstar, a new player would not be sufficiently acclimatised to our ways to be totally effective.

This, I believe, is where we are at.

Brendan needs to assess what he has, go with what he feels can get us through, then build from there.

I recall a pic in the ‘Playing For Celtic’ book of that season and, it shows Desmond White and, Billy McNeill(THEE most decorated man in scottish football history…imho) arguing with mib, Bob Valentine but to no avail.

Morning Bhoys The same old same old from the MSM this morning teams bidding to buy our players but no one wanting to come to Celtic as we cant afford there wages.Well there are thousands of players out there who would love to play for the hoops it is a matter of our scouting department getting on with the job I must admit I like the fact that Brendan is keeping his powder dry. H.H.

I think that Brendan should manage the players at his disposal, hopefully to the required effect ie: getting into the groups stages before bringing in any new recruits.

The players already there are imho, guid enough and, I think there are still some out on loan who would become like new players under Brendan.

Stokes for example, was giud when he played through the middle with Hooper, the way a Celtic team should be playing – with 2 strikers, maybe even 3 ?

Be interesting to see how Paddy Roberts turns out under Brendan.

But, just now….it’s all about – Brendan the manager of the resources available to him.

  12. This story about Jesus on the cross appearing during the huns’ game is news to me but then I realised that i was working and living in Telford (new town) at the time. I can confirm that 1979 was a really bad winter as I hated Telford and my mood wasn’t elevated by the weather.

I remember going home one weekend and having to spend 5 hours overnight in Crewe station because of the weather that winter. Left Telford about 4 pm to get train from Wolverhampton and eventually got to Glasgow Central between 6:00 and 7:00 the following morning, most of the weekend was lost.

Great memories on the whole Cologne thing. All the details coming back through everyone’s stories. I seem to recall now that the still was part of an STV promo for an Easter programme which accidentally (?) slipped in. Remembering now that the game being cancelled was one of the contributory factors to season going on past the cup final.

    KevJ,

Agreed. It will be his first test as our manager and should he succeed, he will have bought himself time to implement his plans,

It will be enough for him to get to know the players he has, without trying to integrate new guys to the group.

  15. Tricoloured Ribbon on

    Tiny Tim.,

Deila should have been bulleted straight after the Huns debacle.

The new manager would then have had a bit of time to assess the squad and sort out the situation in the remaining games and dump the duds who disgraced the Celtic jersey in that semi-final.

As it stands he is reliant on video tapes and before we know it these Champions League qualifiers will be upon us in no time.

I posted the names of players in the early hours who I think could get us to the group stages..

I have just been checking back and there seems to be evidence of the Christ on the cross image appearing on the screen briefly before the start of the Cologne match.

However, i distinctly remember watching the Valencia game and when Kempes scored his first goal there was the briefest flash of the christ on the cross after the goal was scored.

I can’t find any such footage on line though I can find the goal concerned and it was exactly as I remembered.

Robert Powell image from Jesus of Nazareth appeared during broadcast of Thems ECQF 2nd leg v Cologne March 1979.

It was a particularly bad winter.

The cologne game was postponed 24 hrs and played the Thursday night. There was a Glasgow Derby scheduled for Hampden on the Saturday. Ibrox was being renovated. They drew 1-1 at home after 1-0 loss away. Never in tie after conceding the AGoal.

Snow showers – and the deflation of their EC defeat – led to them having the game v us cancelled on the Friday morning. They were however able to play a Glasgow Cup tie v PT at Ibrox on the Saturday at the same time as Hampden was playable after a thaw.

The good guys won in the end. 4-2 anyone?

    Morningg All,

There was a post somewhere last night about the Rangers game being covered by STV where a large picture of Christ on the cross appeared immediately after Rangers conceded a goal.

My recollection was that the game concerned was agaisnt Velencia and that the image appeared immediately after the goal was scored by Mario Kempes? Anyone else recall that or is my memory playing tricks on me.

I posted a wee tale last night and repeat the link again – it’s the story of a little known brave man.

That game was Them against Cologne at Ibrox. Cologne scored and immediately a black and white image of Christ on the Cross appeared on the screen and remained for what seemed like a couple of minutes. The STV switchboard was besieged by outraged Huns and they put out an apology at the end of the game saying that an error had occurred and a publicity picture for Jesus of Nazareth has been wrongly shown. However, in all the publicity for Jesus of Nazareth, there was never such a picture.nI think it later emerged that an employee was sacked.
