Strikers liniked, the good and the indifferent

557

Back in the 90s, when we struggled to achieve much, we appeared to have the Midas Touch when it came to signing strikers. The Three Amigos, Henrik and even big Mark(o) made the job look simple. It was keepers and the like we had trouble signing back then.

The litany of strikers who have trudged through Celtic Park in recent seasons provides sharp contrast to earlier times. Scott McDonald, Gary Hooper and Leigh Griffiths are the only strikers with a half decent scoring record since the departure of The Swede 12 years ago. Since then we’ve been home to many and various strays, from Dion Dublin to the Miku-Lassad twins, Kazim-Richards, Cole, Scepovic and Guidetti.

A few of these worked on paper (Scepovic and Guidetti) but the return on our money has been painful.

Getting it right in this department is important for Brendan Rodgers but I’d caution judging too much on what a player looks like on paper. I remember the comments section when McDonald (largely sceptical) and Griffiths (vehemently opposed by many) joined.

There are lessons from elsewhere too. Markus Rosenberg scored 20 goals in five seasons (none in 18 months at West Brom) before pitching up at his first club Malmo and eliminating Ronny Deila’s Celtic. Rosenberg was 32-years-old at the time but Malmo knew what they would get from him.

I’m not particularly inspired by any of the strikers we’re being publicly linked with but I’d take a player the manager knows and trusts can do the job before someone who shakes out of the scouting DVDs.

Chris Sutton Night, Irvine CSC

The Irvine Celtic Supporters’ Club are hosting a Chris Sutton evening on Friday, 24 June, at their social club in the town. Tickets are available for £10 by calling the club (evenings only) on 01294 271967.

If you are from the area, or fancy a good night out in Ayrshire with a Celtic striker who looked good on paper, looked better on the field, and delivered some of our best memories in the last 40 years, get along to see him – and bring your camera.

I made one comment about Stephen Fry.

    Hypocrite .

I made no comment whatsoever about his sexuality or that of anyone else.

    Nor would I.

    None of my business.

Disingenuous there, old bean. Most unbecoming of you.

One thing I’ve always enjoyed about our exchanges over the years has been your unflinching willingness to stand up for your opinions and to back up what you’ve previously said.

  3. MO’N saying that he wanted to try to get Celtic as close to the Mr Stein era as it was possible to get. Then the Hierarchy brought in PL and half emptied the stadium with, one puppet-manager after another.

Ye see, when we came back from Seville, the narrative from the Hierarchy should have been along the lines of – “The top level of the game has seen just how magical the Celtic support is, we want to let the Celtic support know that we’ll be doing everything within our means to ensure that, the good folk of Seville and all the other places where our support have made new friends, will see our incredible supporters more often.”

Instead, all we got was – “We need to downsize – we can’t compete at this level – we’re in debt – our esteemed manager blah, blah, blah….”

Aye MO’N….if, rebellious Celtic supporters were in control of our club, you might well have taken us to ‘that’ place that, you knew in yer heart, where Celtic FC and her magical fans should be…..

    Ye know what else MO’N…..?

I will forever be convinced that, you flicked the switch, lit the fuse with yer famous media conference in the Nou Camp in 2004 when, you called out the condoned sectarian-racist treatment of Neil Lennon on the pitch at ibrokes when you walked round the pitch with Neil after the final whistle when, your team lost a mibberied game and, you let the establishment know that ‘you’ would not be rolling over or, sitting at the back of the bus for no klan.

    MO’N……my biggest regret…..?

That, MO’N and the KOK’s never experienced being being cemented into the soul of Celtic FC, by the Jungle.

Mhan,…..that would have been so grand.

MO’N….I think yer Republican team can get out of this group and then,…..the magic begins….imho.

    1916 – 2016…..watch this space.

    ……oot-zzzzzzz……..

To return to the point I made earlier,it was that Fry is likely to have had his lifestyle choices criticised personally by members of the Catholic faith, but not so much by Moslems. As such,he was commenting from personal experience.

That’s by-the-by. I take your point that he should have been less selective in his criticism. But then he might have been accused of a scattergun approach.

Israel and its neighbours is simple in theory. Making it actually happen is devilishly complicated.

When people in that area want life for their children more than death for their enemies then peace will have a chance.

We cannot celebrate the birthday of a state that even now engages in ethnic cleansing, that violates international law, that is inflicting a monstrous collective punishment on the civilian population of Gaza and that continues to deny to Palestinians their human rights and national aspirations.
