Strikers liniked, the good and the indifferent

557

Back in the 90s, when we struggled to achieve much, we appeared to have the Midas Touch when it came to signing strikers. The Three Amigos, Henrik and even big Mark(o) made the job look simple. It was keepers and the like we had trouble signing back then.

The litany of strikers who have trudged through Celtic Park in recent seasons provides sharp contrast to earlier times. Scott McDonald, Gary Hooper and Leigh Griffiths are the only strikers with a half decent scoring record since the departure of The Swede 12 years ago. Since then we’ve been home to many and various strays, from Dion Dublin to the Miku-Lassad twins, Kazim-Richards, Cole, Scepovic and Guidetti.

A few of these worked on paper (Scepovic and Guidetti) but the return on our money has been painful.

Getting it right in this department is important for Brendan Rodgers but I’d caution judging too much on what a player looks like on paper. I remember the comments section when McDonald (largely sceptical) and Griffiths (vehemently opposed by many) joined.

There are lessons from elsewhere too. Markus Rosenberg scored 20 goals in five seasons (none in 18 months at West Brom) before pitching up at his first club Malmo and eliminating Ronny Deila’s Celtic. Rosenberg was 32-years-old at the time but Malmo knew what they would get from him.

I’m not particularly inspired by any of the strikers we’re being publicly linked with but I’d take a player the manager knows and trusts can do the job before someone who shakes out of the scouting DVDs.

Chris Sutton Night, Irvine CSC

The Irvine Celtic Supporters’ Club are hosting a Chris Sutton evening on Friday, 24 June, at their social club in the town. Tickets are available for £10 by calling the club (evenings only) on 01294 271967.

If you are from the area, or fancy a good night out in Ayrshire with a Celtic striker who looked good on paper, looked better on the field, and delivered some of our best memories in the last 40 years, get along to see him – and bring your camera.

A rewrite of the wording plus quite a few changes to the Laws of the Game being used for the first time in Euro 2016, such as …

    Triple punishment

The ‘triple punishment’ which awaits those who prevent obvious goal-scoring opportunities in the opposition penalty area comprises a red card, the concession of a penalty, and a subsequent suspension.

But from June 1, the red card will be downgraded to a yellow if the foul was a genuine attempt to play the ball. Handball, grappling, and violent conduct are still red-card offences though.

    Also …

Players who are injured by a challenge punishable by a yellow or red card can now have quick treatment on the field, rather than having to leave, which previously gave the offending team temporary numerical advantage.

A wee story about American gun ownership. A few years ago went a family holiday to Florida. Hired a villa in a quiet cul de sac with only a few properties. First day there, met the owner next door, retired cop lived alone. He says it’s quiet around here etc etc, our cards were marked when he said if I see anyone I don’t know on my property I shoot them. Anyway, a few days later I’m out in the back garden throwing a frizzby with my cousin and low and behold it goes over his hedge. Safe to say we just left it there! Point being you can’t underestimate how that kind of culture exists and how seriously they take their right to bear arms.

Belgians confirmed as no shows – too many self indulgent ‘individuals’ – Italy do the team thing

Truly woeful from Belgium. How can you make such a poor team from so many good players? Same at the World Cup. Gotta be down to the coaching.

Lukaku should have been off at half-time. By the time Origi came on Italy were defending so deep that he couldn’t make use of his pace.

The players were pretty awful too. De Bruyne (twice) and Hazard took shots when there was an Italian defender standing right in front of them! The free-kicks were utter mince.

Fair play to Italy who played well. But Belgium made it so easy for them.

  18. Delaneys,
