Sun setting on striker flop, Football for Schmucks

681

News that the sun is setting on Amido Balde’s Celtic career will be welcomed far and wide.  His arrival on the back of a few YouTube clips and what now appears to have been a Portuguese marketing scam is a salutary lesson on how easy it is to expire transfer and wage budget, while incurring the even greater cost of poor recruits – Champions League failure.

We will never get them all right, but the processes Celtic went through to recruit a striker in the summers of 2012 (Lassad, Miku), 2013 (Balde, Pukki) and 2014 (Guidetti, Scepovic) are worth some urgent revision.  None were able to hold down a regular place in the team.

In mitigation, it’s easier to recruit a keeper or a defender (which we’ve done very well at recently) than a striker, but there will be lessons to learn from those six signings.  Quickly, I hope.

On the positive side, all of the aforementioned arrived with a degree of realism attached.  I noticed this morning: “Wabara really is in the mould of Barcelona great Dani Alves”.  This isn’t fun anymore.  Honest football fans (many are) are being treated like simpletons.

It’s like that Steve Carell movie, Dinner for Schmucks, where Paul Rudd doesn’t have the stomach to laugh at absurdly unfortunate guests.  Better they are put out of their misery than dragged through an ignominious humiliation before inevitably emptying their pockets at the alter of a Sports Direct retail contract.

“But we would make more money if we get to the last 16, I do believe that.”

Of course we would “turnover” more money but most of it would go in bonuses due to the players who achieved it and paying back the increased costs of the players who did it. And, since we have already managed this 3 times during our “Complaining Years (post-MON)”, then where is the achievement in doing it a 4th time?

“Ambition,a dirty word around Celtic Park.”

Too many unarticulated concepts in that statement. Whose ambition? What level?

My ambition is to be as good as we realistically can be. That will always disappoint those who want us to be better than that and “damn the realism!”

And, as I’ve said before, I don’t think ambition is the right word, when you’re asking other people to achieve it for you. That is ambition akin to wanting your life to be better by complaining that your mother did not marry a richer man than your dad.

Glad you share the love for Jamie T. Looking forward to seeing him smash Benicassim in a fortnight. Followed by Noel Gallagher then The Prodigy at 2am. Good Friday night line up. :)

I’ve seen Noel and Liam in their various bands over the yearts, all good, but Noel and his high flying birds in Edinburgh was one of the great gigs, brilliant it was

Saw Oasis often, Balloch was mind blowing in many ways. :)

First time I will see Noel and his high flying birds will be in Spain in a fortnight. My son and I will be at the front with our new Hoops shirts on. Maybe storm the stage. Sure Noel would love to be joined by a pair of mad Glesga Tims. :))

  5. I thought Beady Eye would be the best, and it was cracking in Glasgow but Noel blew it away. You are in for a treat, though I’m not a big fan of out door gigs

  6. Just read the post, haven’t scrolled through the comments. Makes me think of Wenger’s observation a few transfer windows ago. “There is more money available than there is talent.”

  7. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you our club Captain Scott Brown:

  9. Dundee United have rejected an offer from Celtic for last season’s top scorer Nadir Ciftci.

It’s understood that the bid from Parkhead chiefs was in the region of £900,000.

Turkish striker Ciftci, 23, is in the last year of his United contract and rejected the offer of an extension earlier this month.

    Tell me it ain’t true.

If so, can anyone believe that would be an RD signing?

Strikes me as the opposite of an RD signing

I would say 100% an RD signing and definitely not a scouting department recommendation. He scores goals so that rules out John Park and his staff recommending him. RD has said he wants (what he thinks is) the best of the SPFL.

The Sun say a £900k bid has been knocked back by DU from us, The Mail say Middlesbrough ready to bid £1.7m. Given he’s into last year of contract and can be signed for free in January I would say our bid is excessive (Boro’s nonsense), especially as there’s a chance he’ll miss a large chunk of the season if found guilty of biting. Can’t see anyone signing him before his hearing on July 20th.

  13. Celtic in for Ciftci? The Lawwell haters will be along shortly ranting about cost cutting. From a football point of view I would prefer Rooney from the Sheep who is a proven goal scorer. Just my thoughts.

Reading back I saw the link above posted.

I suspect this guy should have stuck to the party line about no potpourri! Shameless behaviour.

    Ok mate.

I just think he looks a lazy player, very immobile and disinterested.

Also disappointed if he is the height of our ambition.

A bit of a bammer as well!

    IMO of course !

  15. Morning all.

Mild but none too bright down here. Still, it isn’t actually raining, which is an improvement of sorts.

Won’t comment on Ciftci until/unless he signs.
