Sun setting on striker flop, Football for Schmucks

681

News that the sun is setting on Amido Balde’s Celtic career will be welcomed far and wide.  His arrival on the back of a few YouTube clips and what now appears to have been a Portuguese marketing scam is a salutary lesson on how easy it is to expire transfer and wage budget, while incurring the even greater cost of poor recruits – Champions League failure.

We will never get them all right, but the processes Celtic went through to recruit a striker in the summers of 2012 (Lassad, Miku), 2013 (Balde, Pukki) and 2014 (Guidetti, Scepovic) are worth some urgent revision.  None were able to hold down a regular place in the team.

In mitigation, it’s easier to recruit a keeper or a defender (which we’ve done very well at recently) than a striker, but there will be lessons to learn from those six signings.  Quickly, I hope.

On the positive side, all of the aforementioned arrived with a degree of realism attached.  I noticed this morning: “Wabara really is in the mould of Barcelona great Dani Alves”.  This isn’t fun anymore.  Honest football fans (many are) are being treated like simpletons.

It’s like that Steve Carell movie, Dinner for Schmucks, where Paul Rudd doesn’t have the stomach to laugh at absurdly unfortunate guests.  Better they are put out of their misery than dragged through an ignominious humiliation before inevitably emptying their pockets at the alter of a Sports Direct retail contract.

Rooney would be my choice before Chiff-chi, the turk is a bit of a loose cannon and seems more suited to be a hun.

    Pity they’ve no cash :)))

Ciftci. No thanks. However I believe in Ronny.

Still staggered by Paul’ s points about Balde. Was Bangura a similar story? Someone should surely be held responsible for such inept decisions.

  4. Rooney suits Aberdeens style of play. Not a bad thing. He is a bit useless with the ball at his feet.No doubt he can put the ball in the net, nothing against the boy,but maybe not what RD is looking for.

I have faith in the manager. He knows ,it seems, what he wants this season.

Was informed last night from a zombie at the hotel bar. GSL is waiting to next season to put his 30 million in “take it to Celtic straight away”.

Warburton has worked with these signings or knows them well and are unearthed gems. Watch the football we play next season.

Respect to Macjay and WITS for inspiring debate and giving a much needed alternative view to certain matters. It was heartening to read that all would be made welcome to future CQN gatherings.

I was suggesting….that Leigh Griff, and/or Ciftci…..will not set the CL alight.

Don’t get me wrong…I like Leigh Griff.

But id rather we signed a CL level striker….for example, id rather have Gary Hooper than Ciftci.

But…..I realise, that its all about getting something for nothing…..which doesn’t actually work.

Im starting to think….that there is somebody at CP, who does not have a clue about football….and it isn’t Ronny.

  9. CELTIC signing target Jelle Vossen is in negotiations with English Championship side Burnley over a summer transfer, according to reports in his native Belgium.

The £2million-rated striker has two years left on his contract at Racing Genk with an extension on the table.

However, it is understood that he is keen to consider his options after spending last season on loan to Middlesbrough. Celtic are eager to sign a new centre-forward for the Champions League qualifiers with Vossen one of the main targets on manager Ronny Deila’s hitlist.

Vossen made it to the Play-Off final with Aitor Karanka’s side and respected Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws has reported that Burnley manager Sean Dyche has moved to take him to Turf Moor as a replacement for Liverpool-bound Danny Ings.

According to HLN, the 26-year-old is understood to be in England for discussions at the moment.

  10. My friends in Celtic,

I thought I knew what Ronny wanted in terms of movement, style and shape.

I cannot see Ciftci fitting that ask. However if RD wants him, who am I to doubt.

    That’s my point earlier mate.

I hope Mr Parks views don’t take precedence over RD.

Just can’t see him as an RD player

  12. Norwich would be looking for as close to the £6m they paid for Hooper should they choose to get rid of him. They’ll probably get £3-4m. Add in the wages the player is now on and there’s no chance that he will return to CP. He’s not what we’re looking for, it looks like the manager wants a target man to play as the lone striker.

  16. Hail Hail to AWE-NAW’s list of….

    Trialists/projects/chancers…etc…blah, blah…

…all brought to Celtic, not to enhance the product on the pitch but, to dilute and hopefully(for PL & JP) get away with deceiving the paying customers who shell out to watch the product on the pitch….or, as I know them…Celtic supporters.

Last year there was a new window of opportunity for the board or, those who operate at executive-level to ‘shaft’ the Celtic supporters by, sending them to Murrayfield for the CL-qualifiers as, the stadium at Celtic Park(Celtic’s greatest weapon for the players) was to be prostituted by the club….dissing…shamefully, the very folk who forked out to build the stadium through a share-issue that ‘still’ saw them on the outside looking-in….this time…all the way from Edinburgh…shameful-shameful-shameful…imho.

All that fecking about for – £5 million – that was never going to find it’s way onto the pitch and, there’s worse….by their greed….Celtic’s executive-operatives…in effect, cost the club a £20 million CL-pot….who’s head rolled for this…?

    The answer….nobodies! Rudderless PLC….aye.

There’s an executive-clique hiving-off the Celtic income to the expense of the Celtic product on the pitch therefore, they are ripping-off the very folk that they are supposed to be serving…..YOU….the money spending Celtic supporters, and that is…imho, far, far worse than ‘anything’ that has gone on at the huns place…and yet, the folk who are being ripped-off…are looking the other way…watching the events at Sevco…????

The Celtic executive operatives have cost RD a CL-money-pot to build his team….coz of their, CWG’s ‘greed’ last year….know what really sticks at the pit of my stomach….these same executive operatives will, spin their way out of this at the ‘punch & judy’ AGM….telling all the fawning-sheep in attendance that we wont go down the road that the huns went down….oh no?…..has Lawwell been worth the near £20 million that he’s trousered in what, 10 years of ‘puppet-show-managers’….?

The Celtic Football Football and Athletic Company, that I was brought up with, eat, slept, breathed and drunk….became a rich mans toy when Fergus took a leaf from Murrays book and closed ranks with his O## F### buddie and took geat pleasure at placing the financial-gun at our heads when he said – “You won’t get into the two O## F### games if, ye dont buy a SB.”…..and, his little add-on – “There will also be a waiting-list of fans who’ll quickly uptake your SB should you not renew.”

How many share-issues have Celtic fans subscribed to since Fergus took over the club..? 2? 3?…I dont know that’s why I’m asking….thing is…all those shares purchased and still….the fans are on the outside of the club that ‘THEY’ built and paid for the stadium with their over-subscribing of shares….a, super-human effort….or, taken-in on a grand scale…?

Celtic PLC are a rudderless ship where ‘nobody’ is accountable for the loss of £20 million CL-money….or, AWE-NAW’s list of deceitful-mediocrity….on a grand scale.

But…know what….nobody cares coz…the huns are in a lower league.

Greedy-gullible-galoots…scoffing jelly & ice cream while the Celtic executives line their pockets…..dearie, dearie…right enough.

Take PL’s bonus, and put it towards buying a striker who will get us into the group stages.

How any team is expected to compete without improving their players, especially at CL level, is totally beyond me.

Now….nobody expects Celtic to bust the bank, however, if you want to get the big prize money, id suggest the board get their fingers out.

They need to realise…..you don’t get something for nothing.

    Its not rocket science.

  22. Surely if Hooper costs £3m to buy and add in his wages , we will just be giving Norwich back what we got from them?

  23. Glad to see that Liam Henderson is back, but injured.

Scored a few goals at Rosenborg, but didn’t actually start a league game as far as I am aware and seemed to spend most of his time warming the bench.

Don’t imagine Ronny was too happy about this. If the Rosenborg coach comes calling for more Celtic youth loanees, I would expect Ronny to tell him to gtf!

I don’t understand it…..The board want to net upwards of 20 million from the CL, so, they go out and try to sign a striker for 900,000.

    Genius eh.

Pay me the same as the board, I could do that easily.

Seriously, when I comes to players, this board are atrocious.

    Its totally ridiculous.

It wouldn’t be tolerated in any other sphere of business, or football.

Our board coast on huge salaries, while the signings get cheaper, and cheaper, but they still expect top dollar from the supporters….mmmm.

The same board, who as KevJ pointed out……decided we should play at Murrayfield, so that they could coin a quick buck….shocking.

No wonder we got humped last season in the CL.
