News that the sun is setting on Amido Balde’s Celtic career will be welcomed far and wide. His arrival on the back of a few YouTube clips and what now appears to have been a Portuguese marketing scam is a salutary lesson on how easy it is to expire transfer and wage budget, while incurring the even greater cost of poor recruits – Champions League failure.
We will never get them all right, but the processes Celtic went through to recruit a striker in the summers of 2012 (Lassad, Miku), 2013 (Balde, Pukki) and 2014 (Guidetti, Scepovic) are worth some urgent revision. None were able to hold down a regular place in the team.
In mitigation, it’s easier to recruit a keeper or a defender (which we’ve done very well at recently) than a striker, but there will be lessons to learn from those six signings. Quickly, I hope.
On the positive side, all of the aforementioned arrived with a degree of realism attached. I noticed this morning: “Wabara really is in the mould of Barcelona great Dani Alves”. This isn’t fun anymore. Honest football fans (many are) are being treated like simpletons.
It’s like that Steve Carell movie, Dinner for Schmucks, where Paul Rudd doesn’t have the stomach to laugh at absurdly unfortunate guests. Better they are put out of their misery than dragged through an ignominious humiliation before inevitably emptying their pockets at the alter of a Sports Direct retail contract.

I noticed Luke Donnelly receiving a couple of mentions this afternoon. As far as I am aware Luke will be going out on loan to Greenock Morton next season, where hopefully Jim Duffy will look after him. However Luke is with Celtic for pre season and is hoping to be part of the squad for the pre season friendlies at St Mirren Park.
Hindsight and list of flops is great, but did Celtic not get anything/anyone right over the years covered by the list? I take it Celtic won nothing in those years.

Hello, just back in from a wee trip to Glasgow, caught up with the Mrs after work and had a cracking wee tapas meal at a place called La Boca , 189 Bath St.
Incredible value for money witha crackin jug of Sangria in the mix as well, had a wee Itison voucher to numb the pricing . However the menu showed some great value across the board.
Would strongly recommend to anyone ….had a wee chat with the owner , seemed like a top bloke genuinely intersted in bringing proper Spanish food to Glasgow, hope he does well.

Thomas Gravesen didn’t have a bad a career as a footballer.
The international midfielder got to play for massive clubs like Everton, Real Madrid, Hamburg and Celtic and represented Denmark at the World Cup and European Championships.
Coming off that cloud and into retirement would be tough for most players, especially as Gravesen called it quits at the age of just 32 in 2009.
At the time he was blasted by the Danish press for throwing his life away. He was in a relationship with a porn star called Kira Eggers and comment pieces in the country suggest he was washed up and on a slippery slope to ruin.
However, Gravesen has proved all his doubters wrong and then some.
According to Danish newspaper BT, Gravesen invested his career earnings in a number of financial businesses and struck the jackpot.
He is now worth over €100m (£82.61m –about enough to bid for Gareth Bale) retired again in 2013.
How is going to spend this retirement? Well he has just moved to Las Vegas with his latest squeeze – stunning Czech-born American model Kamila Persse – where he plans to spend the rest of his days living the life of luxury and indulging in his passion for gambling.
According to the paper: poker, roulette and blackjack are amongst his favourite games.
It might be tough to recreate the buzz of the Premier League or the Bernabeu but as silver medals go – it doesn’t sound too bad!
