Sun setting on striker flop, Football for Schmucks

681

News that the sun is setting on Amido Balde’s Celtic career will be welcomed far and wide.  His arrival on the back of a few YouTube clips and what now appears to have been a Portuguese marketing scam is a salutary lesson on how easy it is to expire transfer and wage budget, while incurring the even greater cost of poor recruits – Champions League failure.

We will never get them all right, but the processes Celtic went through to recruit a striker in the summers of 2012 (Lassad, Miku), 2013 (Balde, Pukki) and 2014 (Guidetti, Scepovic) are worth some urgent revision.  None were able to hold down a regular place in the team.

In mitigation, it’s easier to recruit a keeper or a defender (which we’ve done very well at recently) than a striker, but there will be lessons to learn from those six signings.  Quickly, I hope.

On the positive side, all of the aforementioned arrived with a degree of realism attached.  I noticed this morning: “Wabara really is in the mould of Barcelona great Dani Alves”.  This isn’t fun anymore.  Honest football fans (many are) are being treated like simpletons.

It’s like that Steve Carell movie, Dinner for Schmucks, where Paul Rudd doesn’t have the stomach to laugh at absurdly unfortunate guests.  Better they are put out of their misery than dragged through an ignominious humiliation before inevitably emptying their pockets at the alter of a Sports Direct retail contract.

  1. Never tried to glorify it WITS. Never started or wanted to start a debate about it either,.macjay did that and came out with his one sided Universal condemnation. Had I anything to do with shin dig I wouldn’t exclude anyone but I wouldn’t have specifically invited macjay as if he was something special.

As I say I’m not involved, I wish the organisers and all who go a great time, but I’ll not go.

I once tried the same arguement with Gerry Adams.

Never got the scrape of a pen from him.

  6. Naw Wits,I have no interest in winning anyone over to anything. I’m on here coz it enhances the Celtic experience. I hate it when the debate starts about the conflict in Ireland.I support the Peace Process and I support reconciliation. Harsh words provoke a response and stirs up old feelings which I rather stayed dormant. I’ll just keep my distance.

What about the Celtic supporters who were murdered by the IRA

    Plenty of them also

    As I have posted previously.

Good men with guns in their hands are few and far between.

We have bought some truly awful strikers in the last few years.

All signings are gambles so you can’t lambast Celtic for who they did not sign.

Hindsight is easy.Daryl Murphy was from the championship and look poor for us so maybe CW would have to.

The protocol for signing strikers seems to be the problem.

Ronnie seems to be a whole picture and thorough guy so hopefully this time we will get it right.

I always liked Brattback but felt he was not the right fit.A good striker in the wrong team.

    Likewise Nicholas for Arsenal.

Fair enough I would agree with your above statement.

Its a pity we cant have a proper discussion about this one here as it means a lot to most of us.But it soon descends into name calling and insults.

Looking forward to the Brilliant Nir Bitton Starring in the Champions League next Season, he wants to play for Celtic of Glasgow, massive so that is, IMO.

I would not have signed Murphy,he is slower than me .i just don’t understand the signings that have been made.whoever sanctioned the signings of these non-strikers should be sacked.

  14. WITS,We are all shaped by the family and environment we were born into plus our life experiences. How can a Scotsman with an obvious anti Irish bias living in Australia expect to have a reasonable debate with men who grew up with the Troubles on their doorsteps, This is not a good forum for such discussion and only breeds rancour and dissension.

    Lol.

I did wonder at the time about the nature and timing of his comment.

Didn’t give him the benefit of the doubt, tho. Never mind, no harm done and all good banter – now he’s got a new nickname when he tires of cosycornerbhoy.

    ;))

    ( ^ see that? – a smiley!)

  16. P67 – would hesitate to include Scepovic in that sextet of failed strikers.

Once he’s been given the same amount of starts as that waster Guidetti got (keeping Scepovic benched) then we’ll see if he’s got what it takes.

IMO he looks a level above in terms of quality, but needing decent service and gametime, and a decent break from a manager who couldn’t seem to take his Guidetti specs off for the last 4 months of the season.

I didn’t grow up in Germany,I wasn’t alive during world war 2 but I am entitled to have strong feelings about what happened during that period

What irks me just as much as our dud striker signing philosophy, is the garbage the often comes out in subsequent boardroom statements. To be told that the Pukki/ Bangura/ Balde we have signed was our number one target all along and the fact that it took until the end of the transfer window shows our patience and determination to get the right man in.

If some of these guys were top targets, thank feck we didn’t sign some of the bums further down the list.

How to treat the average fan as an idiot.

Beach bar tele tells me that Josef Masopust has died. .Fabulous football player.Played for Dukla v Celtic in 67.I was chuffed by the opportunity to see but also worried by what he might do . He was marked out of the game.

    Josef Masopust RIP

  20. Scepovic will, hopefully, muscle into the Celtic First Team. He has potential and very good movement.

    Ronny is the Man.

My favourite game where we got beat was the Partizan 5-4 game, amazing being in the Jungle that night.

Just a shame for Del Bhoy

  21. Don’t you just love it when the chat on CQN mellows during the close season.

  22. I remember Josef Masopust in the 67 EC semi-final. He had been one of the worlds best mid-fielders and a first pick for world 11s . When he played agaist Celtic he was a bit past his best but I remember him controlling the game for much of the first half. Think it was 1-1 at half-time. In the second half Celtic stepped up a gear and Wispy Wallace banged in a couple of beauties and set us up for the final. What a night that was.

  23. Got me Kodi for my smartphone and Chromecast so I could watch it on ma TV.

Just off the phone to BT, cancelling my BT Sport. Bloody hell, they must be under huge pressure to retain customers. Guy wouldn’t take no for an answer.

Eventually had to just say, for the fifth time mate, I just want to cancel.

Good luck to anyone looking to cancel with them.
